His candidacy all but dismissed just days ago, Rick Santorum won the Minnesota and Colorado caucuses and a nonbinding primary in Missouri on Tuesday, an unexpected trifecta that raised fresh questions about Mitt Romney’s ability to corral conservative support.

With his triumphs, Mr. Santorum was also suddenly presenting new competition to Newt Gingrich as the chief alternative to Mr. Romney, the front-runner. Where Mr. Gingrich has won one state, South Carolina, Mr. Santorum has now won four, including Iowa.

His performance added another twist to an unruly nominating contest that has seen Republican voters veering among candidates and refusing to coalesce behind anyone. It came after Mr. Romney scored back-to-back victories in Florida and Nevada that had led to predictions that he was finally on a straight march to the nomination.

The results on Tuesday shook the political world, which appeared to once again make the mistake of believing the Republican race for the presidency was finally set on a stable trajectory. But it was an open question whether the defeats were a momentary embarrassment or a prolonged setback for Mr. Romney.

How much the 'news' about political issues, candidates, elections, etc consists of hyper-dramatized 'narratives', speculation, and opinion instead of merely facts about the events?

During the last six months there've been at least a half-dozen 'front-runners' proclaimed by the media-'expert' talking-heads, and now over half of them have imploded or dropped out. What does that really leave their so-called 'expertise'?

Sure, there's a complex of psycho-social phenomena that often makes 'story-telling' more profitable than factual analysis, as least as far as advertisers and commercial media are concerned. Heck, over half the human population still buys into twisted 'religious' narratives; they've been inculcated since birth to view reality through dogmatic filters that promise punishments or rewards for following along with storylines that just happen to reinforce the 'authoritative' heirarchy.

And it's not like most of the candidates don't pretty much continuously violate honesty for the sake of psychosocial rhetoric. The 'media' and their 'experts' aren't really much better, and arguably might be a lot worse.

Anybody want to bet that the pundits will be trumpeting predictions of electoral-dominance for whichever Ripuglican wins the next round?

Newt's response was to continue to undercut Romney and the infamous conspiracy of liberal media: “I think the big story coming out tonight is that it’s very hard for the elite media to portray Governor Romney as inevitable after tonight is over."  So far, he hasn't figured out how to take support away from Santorum although IMO Santorum is more of a threat to Gingrich's candidacy than Romney is.

Of course, the REAL story is the delegate count.  This page: http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/primaries/delegates show two things: 1, that Romney currently has a majority of delegates awarded, and that about 90% of delegates are still to be awarded.

Mitt, Rick, Newt, Ron and Jon. Jesus, why do they all have to sound like characters from pisspoor 1950s Westerns? There'll be a 'Rowdy' and a 'Hopalong' next.

You think that Ron, Rick and Mitt are funny names but you think that Barack isn't ?? I'll take Ron over the Kenyan any time. At least it's an American name.

i think that the Santorum victories basically say that even the republicans concede that they have no viable candidate. You might as well put "none of the above" on the ballot and see who wins.

Hardly, it comes from Old Norse.  As socio-democratic a shining star as can be found on this planet, Norway is....

Or, in the righties emissions, a Marxist-Communist-Socialist country.

just a reminder, mittens has 9 mil cash on hand. gingrich has 2. sanotorum has a quarter mil and a super sized diet sprite.

there is really no doubt who gets the nomination, and it is going to be hilarious watching the gop faithful suck it up for the 2nd straight election and pretend to rally around a dude they hate.

With the advent of the superPACs the numbers and outcomes remain to be seen.

But I don't think anyone is gonna lose alotta money bettin on Romney to lose the presidential election on behalf of the GOP.

Yeah, not having to live with the outcome makes it far more fun.

Not that it's any of my business, but I do think the USA should consider a constitutional change in order to allow adults to be involved in political life, though. So long as their predilection for reasoning about things is kept firmly in check, they are often able to make a valuable contribution, IMO.

It's always amazing to me that when someone (in a political race) gets an upper hand (or a slightly lesser lower one)...particularly in a Presidential race....people get invigorated....even if the player is getting a simple "boost".

Santorum has a lot of chops....he ain't all that.

Gingrich is a fucking slime bag.

Romney, I question his ability to pull the trigger knowing his religious beliefs.

Ron Paul....he's an isolationist....he'll be late to the party in a war, even as he's got great ideas as to economics....but....economists don't run the world.....military does.

So....who's got the game?

Ron Paul will likely tell our opponents (if there was a war) "sorry...we're not playing" and then an EMP arrives and no one can start their cars.

Romney will (possibly) consult his Bible (and other resources) and may determine that "we shouldn't do this" while the rest of the Muslim world decides......"we should".

Gingrich has a hair trigger and will likely start WW3....

And Santorum will probably think it through...probably be thorough....could fuck up.....who knows....

Those are the only ones we have to decide from/about.

It's a fucked up gig.
