Skipper, you got mail.

erieangel -> RE: Unemployment drops for 5th straight month down to 8.3 (2/4/2012 1:25:32 AM)

Since the GOP is largely singing "We can do better" about the jobs numbers, I'd say the numbers are probably correct.

Fellow -> RE: Unemployment drops for 5th straight month down to 8.3 (2/4/2012 9:46:40 AM)

The way the government counts unemployed (household survey) is inadequate. I am wondering why the government is not using real data they have (IRS data, unemployment benefits data, welfare data, food stamp recipients data, subsidized housing data and others). There is no economic growth, or clearly identifiable driver for growth. Where the jobs are coming from? GDP growth is absent, the government small GDP growth number is an illusion generated by underestimating the inflation. I would be convinced there is hope for recovery if somebody would break down the data and explain where the jobs are created.

Try the U6 numbers. Also realize that these jobs, from what I saw, are mostly service industry positions.

erieangel -> RE: Unemployment drops for 5th straight month down to 8.3 (2/4/2012 2:50:27 PM)

Well, we can thank Reagan for this inaccurate system--his economic aids are the ones who created the system we now use. I do agree that the reality of unemployment is much higher than reflected in the system used to count the unemployed, but it is the one even the Republicans are singing in unison about being ok but "we can do better". Maybe we'd be doing a lot better if the Republicans are not constantly blocking everything Obama tries to do to fix things. Tax cuts for the wealthy won't bring back employment; the stimulus worked, but not as well as it would have had it been much larger, etc.

The unemployment rate has not changed. the Number of stores that are for rent, for lease, and for sale has tripled in our area. This is nothing more than pure unadulterated propaganda. Small Business owners watch helplessly as 30% of their personal income and 40% of the revenue from their Business of blood sweat and tears is stolen from them by a group of people who can not even be bothered to balance the Country's Check Book. The left's solution is what? that is correct, lets steal even more. If you honestly believe that the policies of the Current Administration are helping the economy, I simply could not disagree more.

Oh, and any time you hear someone Blaming Reagan, its just sour grapes. a 49 state landslide the Democrat Party will NEVER duplicate. The single most successful and popular President in the modern age. He wasn't evil, he wasn't stupid, and he wasn't a leftist, and he wasn't a moderate. He was also "Unelectable"

two things, reaganomics, and why the fuck isn't there an ignore button on this forum? quite possibly totally right about the propaganda thing though, election coming up and all.

Lucylastic -> RE: Unemployment drops for 5th straight month down to 8.3 (2/4/2012 6:56:53 PM)

The ignore button is called "hide" and you can find it under the avatar of the person you wish to ignore

Rob, I cant speak for the others but the one above caught my eye.

I'm 51 years old, live 20 miles from where this was supposedly published and have never heard of it.

I then did the logical thing (no, I didn't dismiss it out of hand).

I read it carefully. The most article covers the time from 2001 to 2009. This is hardly relevant for this time period. Recently released unemployment figures for this area are 6.6% per the Johnson City Press last week. This is due to new manufacturing jobs being added by medium sized companies. Snap-on is completing a 125,000 Sq Ft addition 2 miles away from where I sit and will shortly be adding more employees.

Further in his blog, some of his claims are just outright lies.

For instance, he claimed that nearly 40% of home sales in Bristol, TN were foreclosures when it was actually under 20%. His claims for Bristol, VA are also similarly false. (I'm a real estate broker and it took less than 30 seconds to check) He also completely lied about quotes from the president of the Realtor Assn. (I know the lady and read her press release this month and he lied about that too).

The funny thing is that he claims to be extremely religious in his other blogs but he lies a lot.

I won't make any claims about your other links but this one is utter asswipe.

DarkSteven -> RE: Unemployment drops for 5th straight month down to 8.3 (2/5/2012 5:45:23 AM)

Face it.  The economy is dismal.  The main reason it is growing is because it fell so far in the first place.

Conventional wisdom says that the incumbent gets the blame for the economy.  Not true now.  Bush still gets blame for driving us into the ditch, and Obama gets blame for not really getting us out.  And, thanks to Gingrich's tireless efforts, Romney gets blame even though he wasn't even in office, for symbolizing the MBAs who squeeze the jobs out of the economy.

If the economy isn't the issue, what will be?

SilverBoat -> RE: Unemployment drops for 5th straight month down to 8.3 (2/5/2012 9:46:42 AM)

Reagan?? ... LOL ...

Reagan might rank as the biggest 'marketing' con-game the rightwing ever pulled on the US people. It was obvious to anybody with an ounce of brains that Reagan was well into Alzheimer's dementia before his first term. Sure, his ability to 'deliver' outrageous lies with a stentorian confidence 'sold' millions of idiots, but thanks to changes in laws and taxes from his era, you've now got a deficit the size of the economy, China's economy on track to dwarf the US, ten-trillions of dollars whirling insanely through stock-schemes instead of investing in real industry, and Supreme Court decisions so extreme that now money=speech and corporations=persons.

Reagan?? ... He was a doddering old stooge, propped up as figurehead for the triumph of appearance over substance ...
