I have mixed feelings about this. he did, after all, shelter an alleged pedophile.

I have mixed feelings about folks who cannot - for just a moment - show just a modicum of respect for a person's passing. But this is the internet, so there you go.

Great coach, tarnished legacy.

Very true, Katy. He will be missed by many regardless of the scandal.

M (a huge football fan)'s post elsewhere:

"For those that believe in Hell, Joe Paterno is rotting in it today. I don't give a damn how many football games he won, or what a legend he was at Penn State. He knew for years what Sandusky was doing to those little boys, and stood by and did NOTHING because it might have hurt your precious football program. Screw respect, screw RIP. Rot in hell you immoral SOB."

Well, M certainly has set himself up as god almighty apparently. I don't give two shits about football but I don't remember Paterno being convicted of anything. He was accused and his reputation ruined and....if it was all true, it was very wrong. Condemning him to burn in hell based on accusations? Ignorant and classless, imho.........luci

Wow, I would hope we could let the body get cold before we start the post mortem burning at the stake.

May his family find strength to get through the loss.

Sally Quinn had a very interesting interview with Joe Paterno that was published in last week's Washington Post. If Joe Pa's version is correct, he actually had little knowledge of what happened. Does that absolve him from all responsiblity in this scandal? No.

Regardless, Paterno ran a clean program with high graduation rates during decades of coaching. Let the man rest in peace.

University trustees dismissed Paterno and school President Graham Spanier after a grand jury report accused Sandusky of more than 50 counts of sexually abusing boys. Sandusky has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A Penn State graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, told the grand jury late last year that he had seen Sandusky "with a boy in the shower and that it was severe sexual acts going on and that it was wrong and over the line." He said he had gone to Paterno with what he saw.

Paterno said he'd never been told the graphic details revealed in a grand jury report, but that he nevertheless passed the allegations on to his boss. After first saying he had done "what I was supposed to do," Paterno said that "with the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

I'm from where the whole scandal took place, my family still lives there. I called two of my sisters today. I asked them how they're doing like I always do when calling. The first thing they both said in very very saddened voices is "Well Joe is dead".

Personally it's sorta a big deal thing for me because Joe was synonymous with football there and football is literally their livelihood there. If it wasn't for football that area would have become a ghost town at least 50 years ago. But on the other hand I was never a sports fan and only ever went to all the football stuff out of tradition and culture there.

So even though what he did was very wrong, I also understand him because I've met him many times, I know the area, I know how people are there, I know their attitudes and such. The scandal wasn't a shock to me.

And so while we could reflect on what he did, we could also keep in mind that he was an old, most likely after the last time I saw him a few years ago, probably already going a little senile and probably should have retired about 10 years ago. We could still at least give him a moment of rememberance not as a coach but simply as a human being and the pain of his family.

There are a lot of things that, with the benefit of hindsight, I wished I had done differently. That doesnt mean he knew it was an ongoing thing, or the extent of the investigation that University conducted at the time.

Something I disagreed with at the time, and still do. The University did what it had to do to protect the school and its reputation as best it could. I never blamed Penn for firing him. However, I do draw the line at blaming Joe for the rapes.

Once is enough.
If he saw what he was accused of seeing, and didn't do every fucking thing he could to protect that boy, death is too kind a punishment.
