OTTAWA—The White House is poised to reject plans for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to move Alberta oil sands crude to American refineries.

U.S. administration officials are expected to make the official announcement Wednesday afternoon to kill the pipeline proposal from Canadian energy giant TransCanada Corp.

The $7-billion pipeline would have run 3,134 kilometres from Alberta across six states, carrying half a million barrels of oil sands crude a day to Texas refineries.

Facing public outcry about the proposed route of the pipeline, the U.S. State Department had already warned Ottawa that a decision on the project would be delayed.

That sparked criticism that U.S. President Barack Obama, facing re-election in November, wanted to push back the divisive issue back until after that vote.

But the Washington Post reported Wednesday that the Obama administration has rejected TransCanada’s application to build the oil pipeline.

The newspaper said the U.S. government would consider a new application from the company that proposed a different route that took the pipeline past environmentally sensitive lands in Nebraska.

its suprising how many other outlets are not mentioning the last bolded part.
oh harper is gonna be unhappy

It is estimated that 20,000 people would be employed if this pipeline were to be built. Instead, Obama caved to the enviromentalists. So much for his 'lazor like' focus on jobs. As far as moving it, these wackos will fight it no matter where it might be built.

TransCanada Pipelines is aware of that and from what I have read, they would consider an alternate route.. but this has turned into a political tug-of-war..

Its much more than Harper being unhappy... Personally, I feel the other pipeline should be built, Canada should diversify, having just one customer isnt a good business decision, that and Canada would get more for its oil by building a pipeline west to Kitamat and selling it to Asia instead.. right now Canada doesnt get as much for its oil from the US as it should, as i have said before.. imnsho, Canada should tell the US where to stuff it..

""With better access and new pipeline capacity, oil producers will see more efficient access to international markets which can add up to $131 billion to Canada's GDP between 2016 and 2030," says the study"

"Economist Michal Moore, a professor at the school and lead author on the study, said Canadian oil currently trades for less than it's worth in the American marketplace because of bottlenecks in getting the product to refineries in the Southern states. These hiccups, notably around the oil hub of Cushing, Okla., increase the time and cost of transporting the oil.
Eliminating them, said Moore, whether through the Keystone XL pipeline or other initiatives, reduces these added costs and boost the price of Canadian oil by almost $10 US a barrel."

"The opening of the Asian market would trigger $10.5 billion in gains and 52,000 person-years of employment in Canada, but almost $10 billion of that wealth and 44,000 person-years go to Alberta. Ontario would get $286 million and 4,000 person-years, while B.C. would get $131 million and 2,000 person-years."

it has been roundly estimated incorrectly, by all accounts, with reality based studies, undertaken with lazer like focus.

My problem with this has more to do with the time involved. The state department is claiming that the 60 days that were given was not enough time to do the environmental assessments. And if it were just the 60 days I would concede them that point.
They have already been studying these thing for three years! I know proper testing can take time, but telling any company, "thanks for the application, we will get back to you in about five years" is just wrong.
Anyone know what they testing for that takes so damn long?

That estimate is nonsense. In reality it would create some additional temporary work for TransCanada contractors (a few thousand perhaps). Of course, the PERMANENT jobs lost due to increased fuel costs in the midwest and polluted lands and waterways offset these temporary job gains.

Just another faux-conservative Republican idea to feed their oil company buddies.

(Not sure what a "lazor" is and who is focusing it) (Perhaps, a laser-like effort is needed to define it)

Even Fox acknowledges this:

The National Resources Defense Council, which is an environmental group, argued the proposed pipeline would actually hurt the labor situation.

“The truth is the pipeline would likely cost jobs from a significant oil spill that would cause widespread contamination of agricultural lands and water,” the environmental group argued in a recent blog post.

An independent study conducted by Cornell University’s Global Labor Institute in September was highly skeptical of the job-creation figures pushed by the oil industry. The Cornell report said TransCanada’s claim of 20,000 direct construction and manufacturing jobs in the U.S. is “not substantiated.”

“KXL will not be a major source of US jobs, nor will it play any substantial role at all in putting Americans back to work,” the Cornell study said.

False dichotomy.the choice is not,and never has been jobs or the environment.
Surely you are not suggesting that the only was to secure work for our population is to despoil the earth and foul the air ?

Building this pipeline will not destroy the environment. It will help with jobs and lower the costs of energy. It isn't an either or. By the way Mike, congrats on the win on Sunday. I was busy all weekend.

No it won't. This stuff is shipping overseas, where the demand (and price) is higher.

And the volume is nothing in comparison to rising demand from China.

I wonder why they just don't build refineries as they are needed in Canada rather then building this pipeline? I can only guess it is because of the refined products having an establish distribution system from the Texas refineries.

But why not then build Canadian refineries on the coast and ship the refined products to distribution centers? I know there are valid answers because they are not going to throw money away but I'm just curious what they are.

I would think building their own refineries, even if expensive now, would pay off long term.

I don’t know the relative costs involved in building refineries as opposed to building and maintaining a 1,600 mile long pipeline…But from an uninformed observer it would seem the costs would be not that much different… and the refinery construction could be quicker.

No,but than again I don't recall using the word "destroy".I do think I alluded to damaging it....which is reason enough to explore other possibilities.
I was busy too, busy watching my Giants dominate the 15 and 1(now 2) Packers.
The congrats are appreciated, perhaps when the Giants win the Super Bowl some of the sting will have lessened

The pipeline has at times been damaged due to sabotage, human error, maintenance failures, and natural disasters. By law, Alyeska is required to report significant oil spills to regulatory authorities.[153] The Exxon Valdez oil spill is the best-known accident involving Alaska oil, but it did not involve the pipeline itself.[154] Following the spill, Alyeska created a rapid response force that is paid for by the oil companies,[155] including ExxonMobil, which was found liable for the spill.[156]

The largest oil spill involving the main pipeline took place on February 15, 1978, when an unknown individual blew a 1-inch (2.54-centimeter) hole in it at Steele Creek, just east of Fairbanks.[157] Approximately 16,000 barrels (2,500 m3) of oil leaked out of the hole before the pipeline was shut down.[152] After more than 21 hours, it was restarted.[158]

The steel pipe is resistant to gunshots and has resisted them on several occasions, but on October 4, 2001, a drunken gunman named Daniel Carson Lewis shot a hole into a weld near Livengood, causing the second-largest mainline oil spill in pipeline history.[159] Approximately 6,144 barrels (976.8 m3) leaked from the pipeline; 4,238 barrels (673.8 m3) were recovered and reinjected into the pipeline.[160] Nearly 2 acres (8,100 m2) of tundra were soiled and were removed in the cleanup.[161] The pipeline was repaired and was restarted more than 60 hours later.[162] Lewis was found guilty in December 2002 of criminal mischief, assault, drunken driving, oil pollution, and misconduct. He was sentenced to 16 years in jail and ordered to repay the $17 million cleanup costs.[163]

The pipeline was built to withstand earthquakes, forest fires, and other natural disasters. The 2002 Denali earthquake damaged some of the pipeline sliders designed to absorb similar quakes,[164] and it caused the pipeline to shut down for more than 66 hours as a precaution.[162] In 2004, wildfires overran portions of the pipeline, but it was not damaged and did not shut down.[165][166]

In March 2006, corroded feeder pipelines on the North Slope gave way, spilling at least 6,310 barrels (1,003 m3) of oil.[167] In August 2006, during an inspection mandated by the United States Department of Transportation after the leak, severe corrosion was discovered.[168] The transit pipelines were shut down for several days that month, and replacement of 16 miles (26 km) of transit pipeline began. The project was completed before Christmas Day 2008 at a cost of $500 million to BP.[169]

In May 2010, as much as several thousands of barrels were spilled from a pump station near Fort Greely during a scheduled shutdown. A relief valve control circuit failed during a test of the fire control system, and oil poured into a tank and overflowed onto a secondary containment area. [170]

A leak was discovered on Jan 8, 2011, in the basement of the booster pump at Pump Station 1. For more than 80 hours, pipeline flow was reduced to 5 percent of normal. An oil collection system was put in place, and full flow resumed until the pipeline was again shut down while a bypass was installed to avoid the leaking section.[171][172][173]

Of course Alaska being Alaska you are comparing apples to oranges.....what with this pipeline cutting thru large populated areas and all that.

How is construction of this pipeline (jobs wise) different from the stimulus funding for roads, bridges, etc?

Dems were FOR stimulus and anti pipeline.

Republicans were Anti stimulus and pro pipeline.

I am starting to admire Obama again for this one. He is doing the right thing, even if for the wrong reason.

This project is a nightmare that only creates temporary jobs with a high, and potentially incalculable, environmental cost. And it appears that much of the oil is destined for China. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/energy/2011/08/110819-keystone-xl-canadian-oil-and-chinese-market/

I can't understand the mindset of those who support this project.

"Saudi Arabia is more of a friend than Canada"...
WTF? how quickly people forget that nearly all the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis... That guy needs to be fired from his teaching job..

Imo, once the US election is over, Obama will change his tune and trying to get that back on track will be one of the first things he will do.. it will happen so fast it will make your head spin... You do remember that he said he was gonna revisit NAFTA if he was elected, then tried to quietly assure Canada's PM that he had no intention of actually doing that..

jmo..
