So far no problems with Vista for me.But I do regular maintenance and keep a Norton subscription.

That's the correct recipe and Norton 360 is a great product, I find, and Vista is a fine operating system and is actually more secure that Win7, it's dumbed down offspring. Win7 is actually Vista under the covers but the Vista offspring is dumbed down and does less and takes shortcuts in order to be perceived as faster than Vista, boot time not withstanding.

Haunted by poor performance in everything from games to disk access to networking, Vista is widely considered to be Microsoft’s biggest failure... Whether you’re coming from XP or Vista, Windows 7 offers a massive leap forward in usability, security, and support for new hardware and technology, especially for enthusiasts and power users... Windows 7 is unquestionably the best version of Windows that Microsoft has ever released

Just wanted to add something I should have before.. As an IT person, I highly recommend downloading the Sysinternals Suite of software if you're reasonably competent and have a good understanding of how computers work (especially how operating systems work). If nothing else, you can almost always use the PSTools programs (like pskill) to nuke a memory resident virus that would normally stop the task manager from even being able to start up. Perhaps that will change some day if pskill becomes popular enough for the virus writers to detect and stop it, but for now.. It works great. It can also be used remotely over a network as long as the basic networking services are running (RPC and the like) on the target (infected) machine.

nly problem is fixing it seems to have made Vista become dumber then it already was. Like, it wanted me to reinstall Task Manager because it couldn't find it kind of dumb.

Most well written viruses disable your Task Manager by rewriting the registry.  They don't want you using it to search for and stop their virus program, then remove it after you deactivate it.  Just tell your brother and he can restore the registry.

Well we have since formatted our PC and went to Win7, so now starts the fun of reinstalling our programs - least all the data is saved on an external HD so we didn't lose that :)

Do not transfer ANY of the data from the external hard drive until you have installed an up-to-date Anti-Virus program on your computer.  I recommend Threatfire or AVG for free programs.

Also do not even connect the external HDD to the computer until you have downloaded and installed all patches for Windows 7 and have the anti-virus installed and up to date.

Not only did we do that, the files were put on the external drive via Ubuntu so no virus could install to the drive and would, on the off chance we don't catch em first, be dormant unless we launched the exe.
