So today I got hit by a kinda nasty virus, which really wasn't that big of an issue I just called tech support (aka my brother) and he came over while I was at work and fixed it.

Only problem is fixing it seems to have made Vista become dumber then it already was.  Like, it wanted me to reinstall Task Manager because it couldn't find it kind of dumb.

The real annoying part, this is only effecting my profile, other profiles are just fine - and I can use them sure.. but they don't have my files or bookmarks and all that stuff.

I guess it works out somewhat though I guess, I get paid soon and I can upgrade to Windows 7 - but that's a hassle unto itself.

Why do computers have to make things more difficult?  Ya, that's a virus' job but once purged why does everything that wasn't even effect suddenly stop working? (The virus blocked internet, not task manager or applications, and yet now the internet is like the only thing that works)

Grrr...

I need more stress relief again now ><

Well most virus programs actually block access to things like task manager and such so that you cant stop it, or uninstall it.

As for just your profile that is a strange occurrence...

However, depending on your browser theres usually an add-on in firefox its xmarks where you can simply save your book marks to a server and add them to any pc you use regularly.. You can also make your files available for all profiles on your computer via a shared drive... So if this profile is really bothering you you can move to another.. Id have your bother look into doing and repair on the system, or a system restore back to the point prior to when you go the virus. He might have jsut removed the virus and not the effects on the various other components the virus changed and thats why your having the issue.... Id also recommend a good antivirus if you dont already have one, Microsoft offers a decent free one called MS Security Essentials.

I share your feelings about Vista..

Personally I'd forget about Windows 7 and go for Linux..

I've been running Linux Mint now for a couple of years, but there's other good systems out there - Ubuntu, PCL:inuxOS, Vector, etc.

What is a virus again?

Vista was only the most recent bastard child of Microsoft much like ME was 12 years ago. Vista is bloated, severely flawed and prone to external attacks. While Win 7 is substantially better, their best offering is still XP if you can find a copy of it.

At a technical level you may well be right about XP, but it's obnoxious to use and shows the kind of clunkiness which was the hallmark of software made in the dark ages. As compared to Vista it's a viable choice, but that's only because Vista was so absurdly bad. Compared to Win7 it's painfully anachronistic.

ETA: If you really, really need that extra effiicency and don't mind a computer which only kind of works (which, if you're still running XP, you clearly don't) go over to Linux and call it a day. DSL or Ubuntu would be my suggestions, but Mint is a good choice for those who are attached to the Windows style.

No matter the OS the PC platform has always been the most systemically complicated, convoluted, problematic and susceptible to user, application and/or virus corruption...bar none...due to the PC platform's "open architecture" which has been equally a blessing and a curse. That it became the dominant personal computer platform when running MS-DOS is a tribute to the marketing prowness of Bill Gates -- often illegal (according to anti-trust laws) marketing prowness. Apple's MacIntosh platform has been less so but still so nonetheless...less so due to Apple's much stricker compliance rules for third-party hardware/software developers but still so nontheless due to the MacIntosh's OS being just like the PC's (hard-drive resident and loaded into RAM whenever the CPU is turned on/re-booted) -- which, for just one example, allows a "Trojan Horse" virus to access a PC's/Mac's OS while it's in RAM then sneak its way onto the hard-drive. The solution? A personal computer platform with a ROM-resident OS...been there, done that...also equally a blessing and a curse...but at least one such computer on a wireless network of similar computers couldn't and therefore wouldn't corrupt the "Printer Driver" of all other computers on the network like my nephew's PC did to my desktop and laptop PCs on my wireless home network over this past Christmas holiday.

Sometimes its easier to start fresh and just get a new hard drive. lol After having the first XP and Vista hell, and topping it off with HP that did some extra stuff to make Vista hell... I got smart. Stay away from HP... try not to get a new OS that comes out and wait until they fine tune it and get an external hard drive, save all you don't want to lose and find a good anti virus that isn't well known to bad guys. I really love my not so popular anti virus and it is great considering the many bad or naughty places I have been.

So far... I am doing great with my new Win7 and the old Vista hell... reformatted, is playing great for the kids desktop program, games and movies. lol

I wouldn't go from Vista hell to Win7... I would go back to XP if I was changing the OS.

I have to call bs, Ive used vista for almost 5 years and am certified in it, and have never had a single virus or issue, i however at least 10 times a week get users in with virus's on xp that i have to spend time fixing....

Theres very little flaws its self in Vista, The things people consider flaws are actually security enhancements..

For example 99% of virus's cant be loaded on to vista or run, with out the user accepting it. Why? The UAC if you didnt fuck with it because it annoyed you when you set it up, will not allow and .exe file to load with out you agreeing. It also creates a secure background so the program cant run in the background...and you can disable it and remove the virus before it starts...

Vista was an AMAZING first trial run at a new interface system, Windows 7 cleaned up a lot of what most people complained about in vista ..its use of ram and how large it needed to be on the hard drive... and people adore it, therefor they adore vista as well, simply because very little was changed to make vista into 7....

Depending on how good your brother is, he can pull the drive out of the pc, and connect it to pull the data necessary off the damaged drive. depending on what the damage was done to the hard drive..He also might be able to make a ghost image to run in a virtual environment to get your data as well and get rid of where the virus has effected.

Also depending on where it stuck in the boot menu it might be even simpiler then all of the above, you might just simply able to enter into recovery mode and get rid of the issues there with out affecting your data (however there might be data lost if it chooses the best option is a factory default)

I also recommend regular backups of your data so something like this doesnt happen again in the future, If you have a thumbdrive (an 8gb is only 10.99 at best buy cheaper elsewhere most likely) you should back up your important files and such on to said drive, so you dont loose anything in case of a failure.

Win 7 is a POS.  I concur - XP has not been matched despite MS forcing its obsolescence.

which is almost like cleaning my plate after eating...?
fast start.... fast shoutdown.... & no viruses, but i have an advantege.....

I run various platforms here.. DOS5.0/Win3.1 (Yes, I still actually use it!), Novell, Win95, 98, NT4, 2K, XP Pro, 2K7 Server, 7 Pro, and several Linux flavors (although I'm only actively running debian atm). Also, some of them are running in VM's rather than physical hardware. I've also got a couple VIC-20's, a Commie 128, an Apple IIe, and even looking in to getting a MacBook or something soon. ME and Vista though.. ::shudders:: There's enough virii out there without intentionally infecting myself with them :-P Well, okay, I have a work laptop with Vista on it. But for the most part, I've always stayed out of those "MY favorite platform is superior to all others" debates, seeing them as little more than carpenters debating which is the best tool; Hammer, saw, wrench or screwdriver? Each is simply a tool with it's own pro's and con's, and some people may have only a small handful of tools for the jobs they do around the house, while others make a career of it and have big rolling tool chests with tools only a pro would even know existed. (Although I still hate ME and Vista, but that's entirely just my personal bias and I do not justify it with any claims of anything else being superior :-P)

However, in my experience, regardless of the stability or lack-thereof, of the platform, I've found the large majority of computer problems to be truly of the "problem exists between chair and keyboard" variety--and not necessarily as in "stupid user," but more the "I'm human and subject to fuck-ups" rule. Even those who religiously follow safe-computing ideals are not immune, so always take precautions and have a backup plan (not just a backup, but a complete plan of what to do in case of disaster).

Jaquin, I suggest you pull the HD and have your brother come over and mirror it to another HD before messing with it any more, so if the messing messes it up more, you can just copy the mirror back and start over.

Well he claims he 'fixed' it via Vista's "repair Windows" function - but no sooner had he left we found things were unchanged from before. So tomorrow we gona backup to an external drive and format, then install 7.

You can't fix many viruses unleashed in the last few months using system restore. And repair only corrects windows issues, whereas viruses mostly hang out in application data. The best thing to do is find out if the virus has a corresponding svchost and stop the process before you can kill the thing.
Loading 7 is nice. I like it, but honestly it is no better than vista or any other windows version when it comes to spyware/viruses.

The best thing you can learn is to spot the problem before it takes over. Alt-Cntl-Del is your friend. And a small tool called RKill is a handly helper.

Speaking as an IT professional (8 years now) it sounds to me like PEBCAK.  Windows Vista, when fully patched and running an up-to-date anti-virus program, is no better or worse than Windows XP or any Mac distro.  Most viruses are brought onto a system by the user.  Either they have downloaded items that were infected, have not kept up on the updates for Windows or have allowed their anti-virus protection to lapse.

The best thing you can do in the future is to make sure you keep your system up to date and always keep an anti-virus program running.

That link will provide you with another option for recovering your data.

I detest when people start the argument about which OS is the best.

I have to agree with Casteele.  Each OS has an area that it excels in.  Mac dominates when it comes to video, audio and photo editing, but tends to fall short in other areas.  Windows is an all-around good OS.  It doesn't excel at anything, but it is decent at most things. *nix (this is a generalization as distros can vary wildly in their specialization) is the most customizable OS.  It can be designed and tuned to be good at most anything, although they tend to be used mostly (and specialize in) working on networks, programming, servers and backbone architecture.

Now with regards to viruses...  Mac's are not superior when it comes to defense against viruses.  The reason that there are fewer viruses for Macs is because Macs do not make up the majority of the market share.  They are not used by banks, corporations and other high profile targets.  As such there is a very slim risk-to-reward ratio.  To say that Macs don't get viruses is simply ludicrous.  Does no one remember the Mac Defender issue?  Also did anyone see the internal memo that Apple circulated?
