Casteele -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/7/2012 12:26:11 AM)

FR My guess would be an issue of security. Most online sites these days take credit card and other personally identifiable information over a secured https server--which is encrypted with very strong encryption. Not 100% secure or foolproof, but more so than completely unprotected/unsecured voice call. I'm actually amazed how many "computer security" classes I've looked at that consider social engineering, dumpster diving, phone phishing, monitor eavesdropping/display snooping, etc, but never address one of the first techniques I learned: Phone tapping. Heck, I changed to digital phones because in this building, with plain old-fashioned phone, I can hear my neighbors over my phone from just the crosstalk alone. Also, the online versions leave a clear "paper" trail and logs. These can be used both to protect the sellers interests and to protect you from fraud.
