It seems like the number of companies refusing to accept orders or payments by phone via credit or debit card is on the rise. They claim it's for security reasons. My father told me never to send  credit or debit card information through the internet to pay a bill or place an order. He advised me to call them instead and give my card information by phone. Now companies are claiming that's unsafe. One company even claimed there's a law against doing that now.  How could calling the company and giving them the info by phone be more dangerous than sending it over the internet for hackers to access?

What companies are refusing payment over the phone? I've not had that issue.

LaTigresse -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 2:46:31 PM)

I would never give that info out via the phone.

As for online........I've done it for years without problems. Pay attention who you shop with and know what your credit card company's policies are with fraudulent charges. In that regard, Amex ROCKS!

Our contract with our card processor prohibits verbal authorizations for cards. We'll take the number over the phone, but the person has to fax us an authorization note with their signature and all the info from the card (with the last 4 digits of the card).

It's dangerous to accept the info over the phone because we (the company I work for) have nothing in writing to back up the charge when you (generic "you") dispute it. If we don't have a signature, we have to return the money, AND we are charged a fee on top of that.

As far as being dangerous for YOU, anyone could use your info and charge things over the phone. Then you will spend time/money/effort getting all those charges reversed (and both you AND the merchant lose).

I'm also someone who uses a debit card online and I've never had any problems. I don't do it over the phone, which isn't a biggie as I hardly ever order pizza.

LaTigresse -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 2:54:18 PM)

I have recently discovered that, while at work, I can go online and order a pizza and pay for it online. Choosing to either pick it up on my way home, or have it delivered.

I am so 21st century![:D]

RexDarcy -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 2:58:46 PM)

I've always liked to pay cash in person when possible. If I have to send a payment in, I always get a cashiers check from My bank and follow up with the company in about a weeks time to make sure they have received it.

When I buy online, I go to the grociery store and buy either a prepaid MasterCard or Visa; and only a couple bucks over the amount that's needed to cover the purchase.

I dont handle credit card numbers at all with my business, So I dont have the issue, Altho Thank you Rex, I just realised the answer to a problem someone asked me about( loadable cards) for people who dont want to us e their credit cards at a "adult shop".
The company that handles my credit card payments is secure, I do not get any details except that its been verified and considered paid. They handle any refunds also.In 11 years Ive not had an issue with either a payment or any fraud issue, and it makes a lot of things easier .
I wouldnt give my CC number to anyone over the phone, and specially not my debit card.
Ive done the pizza thing too and I did a hard drive thru interac(debit) and a computer company
Yeah love it:)
But i dont blame people not wanting to give out their "security and privacy"

My husband tried to pay one of our bills by phone and the company refused to accept payment. I've also been seeing websites that specifically say for safety reasons they don't accept orders by phone.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 3:17:13 PM)

It just seems safer to order by phone because of hackers. It seems to me an employee that misused a customer's information would be easier to catch than a hacker so few employees would do something like that.

Lucylastic -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 3:30:00 PM)

the guy that was recently in the news for bad PR over the game controllers ,took phone and online orders, and was last seen threatening to sell the lists of number and addresses he had to hackers...

You gotta be careful
Thats why I prefer to use a well known processor.
They will cover you in the case of theft. For a fee, of course:)

littlewonder -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 3:30:14 PM)

I've used my debit care online, over the phone, in stores, etc...absolutely everywhere. Master hates that I never ever carry cash on me. I use my card for absolutely everything. I even order a coffee at the coffeeshop and I use my card because I usually have less than $2.00 on me at any given time. I've never once had anyone decline it..oh wait...just last week I did-a Mexican restaurant we'd never been to in town. Turns out they only accept cash and neither one of us had any on us so we left lol.

I've never heard of anyone not taking it over the phone. I have even paid my bills on the phone while I was out running around and realized that if I didn't get it paid that day there would be a late fee.

Oh and I've never had anyone hack me online or over the phone. Online imo is safer because most sites that accept payments online  have secure sites so that hacking is much more difficult. I always check to make sure it's a secure site before giving out my info.

You can still pay some bills by phone--I can actually pay my utilities and even a mortgage payment over the phone.  It's fully automated so I don't actually "tell" someone the number.  Once my credit card is in their system, I can just confirm that I want the card in the system used to pay the bill.   Never had a problem.

Personally....I still write checks.  I know. I'm old fashioned that way.

littlewonder -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 3:41:43 PM)

ughhhh....checks. I write one a month for my rent because my landlord lives around the corner lol.

Other than that...I abhor checks, especially when you're at the grocery store and you get stuck behind someone who has to write one, it has to be approved, blah blah blah.

My sister and my one friend does that and I refuse to go shopping with them lol.

One option that I suggest to phone associates at work, if the customer is not comfortable or refuses to give their cc or debit number over the phone, they can go to the cell store nearest them and have an employee at the store enter the information on to the account. If they do that, the customer just needs to call or go to the store and verify the last four of the card number when wanting to make a payment.

Lucy, I started doing to prepaid card thing about two and a half years ago when I ordered a couple toys online from a large adult company. I got My order, but a hacker got My debit number and wiped almost 2500 dollars US from My account. Took Me almost four months to get that straightened out.

Lucylastic -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 4:49:32 PM)

Ya, I have an online adult store and privacy and discretion is one of the biggest questions I get asked about.
Which is why I use a secure company that actually does cover both merchant and buyer.
I dont need to have CC numbers anywhere I can get hacked into!!!, despite having customer details on a non networked computer I would not be happy with that kinda situation
The loadable cards certainly work well enough.
I'm actually just emailing a customer now with the idea:)
I appreciate it.

Was it a credit card bill? Those are he only ones I've run across who may not take payments over the phone.

xxblushesxx -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 4:59:21 PM)

Paypal used to offer a "virtual" card which would be a card with random numbers generated each time you wanted to buy something. It wasconnected to your bank account and would be set to expire the following day. Really great for places that automatically charge you month after month when you only wanted whatever it was for one month. I really wish they would bring that back.

Best case it'll be near impossible for a hacker to get your information; worst case it'll be about as likely as telling some random 10$/hr person over the phone your card number.

LizDeluxe -> RE: no debit or credit card payment by phone (1/5/2012 6:57:52 PM)

Whenever I use a credit card over the phone I always do it over a landline and never on a cell phone.
