I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I liked the Robert Downey movies, but I feel they have changed the essential nature of the character so much that it is nothing like Sherlock Holmes. But tonight, I saw the BBC series, Sherlock. They got the character exactly right, but set the story in 21st century London. It was amazing! Skip the movie, watch the BBC series.

Benedict Cumberbatch kicks Robert Downey's ass when it comes to playing SH. This is the best version of this story I have ever seen.

I swear I thought you called him cumbersnatch. I had to look again. I liked the movie but he didn't come off as being English enough. I may have to take a look at the series.

Not a great name, true. Boy is he a creepy Sherlock though. He will also be playing the dragon in the Bilbo Baggins movie.

OR you could watch both. It's not like it's a competition. We've enjoyed both of the movies with Robert Downey as well as many other adaptations including Basil Rathbone's stuff. All pretty good.

Don't get me wrong, I love Robert Downey, and I will see the movie. But, that isn't Sherlock Holmes, at least for us purists. Too watered down. SH with a love interest? Puh-leaze. The SH in Sherlock is played as a high functioning psychopath. Now that's my idea of SH.

Keep the nonsensical action movie. The BBC series is the best portrayal of Holmes since AC Doyle.

We enjoy Sherlock, Cumberbach is incredible, and I love Freeman's portrayal of Watson... Can't wait for season 2

i enjoyed both the series and the movie. i can't wait to see the new movie too. the twist for the new series is the time it's set in. so i guess for real purists it's as wrong as having RDJ play sherlock the way he has. if everything was strict to the books what would be the point of doing it again. it's like doing a cover version of a song and doing an exact copy, not much point. i think they both add something new and positive so no need to skip either.

I understand what you mean needles about the time period not being pure, but for me, the draw of SH is the characters, both SH and Watson.  The stories are all very character driven.  Sure, they talk a little about the city and what might be going on, but the characters are the center of the story.  Not all literature is like that.  That is why it doesn't bother me so much to change the time period as long as the characters remain true.  Shakespeare plays are the same way, they are driven by characters, the human interaction, and the language, all of which are timeless.  That is why Shakespeare is so frequently and successfully done in different time settings and places. 
The second season of Sherlock will have Hound of the Baskervilles!  I can't wait!

I like the old Black and White movie in which Basil Rathbone play SH.

I do admit though I have liked the new movies with a modern twist. There are very subtle hints/clues throughout the movie. I like the small hidden details. But the new movies have put less emphasis on details and more on action.

I've never seen a tv or movie version I didn't like. I'm a huge Holmes fan. I will say I don't like the way these movies portray Watson as a drunkard and a compulsive gambler. It doesn't add anything to the movie or the characters.

I have to see this show. I read the stories ages ago and only after having a roommate with the affliction myself did I start to wonder if Sherlock had a form of aspbergers. Trust me, if Watson wanted to beat Sherlock soundly in the head then that was my relationship with my roommate. Robert Downey is great but Sherlock didn't flirt and was rarely as composed. I'll have to check it out.

why dont we watch both,
with all do respect, but dont you think that we can decide for ourselves?

I watch the first movie, & will watch the second one,
& now i am looking for the BBC version,
but with all do respect again. i may have another prospective.

dont get me wrong the BBC is great. but the movie i think is more great.

I'm firmly in the camp of the traditionalists when it comes to Sherlock Holmes. I discovered him in 4th or 5th grade, and went on a tear, reading everything and watching everything I could. My favorite portrayal will always be Jeremy Bratt, with Basil Rathbone a close second.

Now I went into the latest Sherlock Holmes movie with an open mind, and while I enjoyed it, it just wasn't the Holmes I had grown up on.
