This looks really good. I've added it to my "must watch" list.

Thank you for recommending it. [:)]

My roommate knows I like Sherlock Holmes. I have all of the Jeremy Britt work. Plus some others.
I asked him if he knew anything of the BBC Series because I knew he follows BBC stuff often.

AT first he said "Nope, Have not heard much."
THEN there was this odd pause ... "Merry Christmas" he says holding a DVD ...

And what is it .. The First season of Sherlock. Talk about a great beginning for Christmas!

Not a great name, true. Boy is he a creepy Sherlock though. He will also be playing the dragon in the Bilbo Baggins movie.

I remember they used to play the audiobooks of sherlock holmes on xm radio. The guy that played him on there was good. I could picture it all in my head.

Of course the channel used to have that as their motto. The pictures in your head.

Winterapple -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (12/24/2011 9:10:44 AM)

I like the new BBC Sherlock a lot. I think they've stayed true to the characters.
But I will always love the Jeremy Brett
series. That series encapsulates Doyle's
world and his Holmes and his Watson.
I like the Downey movies better than I
thought I would. Downey is a good actor
but I'm never fully buy a sexed up Holmes.
And I don't care much for Guy Ritchie as a
director.
I like the Basil Rathbone movies but they were
updated from the Victorian world to the
then current 30's and 40's.
I thought Christopher Plummer made a
excellent Holmes. His Watson was the always
excellent James Mason. Roger Moore was
not a bad Holmes in the one film he did
playing the character.

[8|].

In any case, I did go see the movie last night. Blah, blah, blah. All I could think of was how much I wanted the Avengers to come out ( I love Robert Downey ) , and how much I would rather have been home watching the BBC. In short, my perspective is that the Holmes movie sucked and that the ex Mr. Madonna could not direct his ham handed way out of a paper bag.
Mission impossible is good though.

why dont we watch both,
with all do respect, but dont you think that we can decide for ourselves?

I watch the first movie, & will watch the second one,
& now i am looking for the BBC version,
but with all do respect again. i may have another prospective.

dont get me wrong the BBC is great. but the movie i think is more great.

[sm=slappy.gif] I disagree 2,000%. That's just mean and wrong. He was never "Mr. Madonna" and is very good in his own right and within his chosen genre/style. Them's fightin' words[;)] You can put down me and you can put down my mother but you leave Guy Ritchie alone, damn ya[8D]

LOL. Well, reasonable people must sometimes disagree.
You should hear the critic from Rolling Stone go off on him about this movie. It would put you into a fighting mood for sure.

I'm getting into the BBC series. Brilliant dialogue. Brilliant interpretation of Holmes. I'm hooked.

Whats the name of that series?

Duh! Never mind, found it!

Thanks!

Duh indeed......thanks for both the laugh and the corset x

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/4/2012 7:28:27 AM)

I watched the new Sherlock episode last night, and it did not disappoint. Sherlock's "love" interest is a dominatrix, of all things! Made me sorry once again that I spent 12 bucks to see that boring Robert Downey movie.

seababy -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/4/2012 7:53:46 AM)

I'm still waiting for someone to portray his drug habit. I dont think any movie or TV series has put that in yet. Watson was an exsoldier and man of action before becoming a doctor wasn't he? So I can see Watson as fairly physical. Unfortunately the very early Rathbone movies showed Watson as a bumbler, but he really wasn't.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/4/2012 8:08:25 AM)

I know, I don't like the SH movies that treat Watson as a bumbler and idiot. He isn't in the books. They have alluded to Sherlock's addiction on the BBC show. In fact, in the latest episode, Watson was tossing Sherlock's room trying to find drugs.

I doubt they ever will introduce the addiction angle in the current movie series, since Robert Downey would probably not want to portray a genius addicted to drugs. I think he is trying to put that behind him.

I really have to check it out.

I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I liked the Robert Downey movies, but I feel they have changed the essential nature of the character so much that it is nothing like Sherlock Holmes. But tonight, I saw the BBC series, Sherlock. They got the character exactly right, but set the story in 21st century London. It was amazing! Skip the movie, watch the BBC series.

THAT is an AMAZING show.....but it seems they only have one episode :(

That thing rocks!

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/4/2012 10:56:43 PM)

There are 4 episodes, so far

Just watched three on itunes. Is there just three to season one and the fourth comes out with season two?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/12/2012 5:08:49 PM)

Now there are five, they just aired episode 2 of the second season. It was Hound of the Baskervilles!   Both episodes from the second season are on dailymotion.com.  I did a search for "sherlock BBC".

Lucylastic -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/12/2012 5:13:17 PM)

The first three by them were brilliant, I cant wait to see the second set.

ResidentSadist -> RE: The REAL Sherlock Holmes (1/12/2012 5:32:51 PM)

I'll have to take a peak at the BBC series.  Thank you for the heads up.

The 1940s Basil Rathbone portayal of Sherlock Holmes will always resound as what I pictured when I read the books.  Even Arthur Wontner's 1930s movies had a real nice feel to them.  I just didn't like that Watson as much as the 40s version.

In my opinion, I feel Robert Downy Junior's portrayal, and the script, didn't violate the precept of Holmes character.  It's like watching Peter Cushing's as Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles.  Cushing's larger than life persona comes through, but he is Holmes.

I liked the new Holmes movie.  I think it wrapped all the lore up in one package, like watching a decent version of the 7% Solution.  Seems they took a lot more liberties with Watson than Holmes.  Watson's character felt alien to me.
