http://www.thespec.com/news/world/article/637652--romney-once-drove-to-canada-with-dog-on-car-s-roof

"It’s not come up in any of the Republican presidential debates as he struggles to keep his campaign on course. He isn’t faced with questions about the incident on the campaign trail. Animal rights activists haven’t been heckling him in Iowa.

But it’s a true story with a Canadian angle: Mitt Romney once made the 12-hour drive from Boston to Grand Bend, Ont., with the family dog strapped to the roof of his car.

New York Times columnist Gail Collins has refused to let the largely forgotten story die, mentioning the incident as many as two dozen times since Romney entered the Republican race for president, both in 2007 and in 2011.

She even hoped John McCain would tap Romney as his running mate three years ago “so I can repeatedly revisit the time Mitt drove to Canada with the family dog on the station-wagon roof.” And just a year ago, Collins had an idea for a Christmas gift for the former Massachusetts governor: “A tasteful Mitt Romney Christmas ornament” depicting the scene of Seamus, the Irish setter, on the roof.

The Boston Globe first broke the story in 2007 when it published a seven-piece profile of Romney after he launched his first presidential run. The Seamus incident was contained in a story about his family life with wife, Ann, and their five sons, and meant to illustrate Romney’s “emotion-free crisis management.”

In 1983, Romney was struggling to cram the kids and all their luggage and supplies into the family station wagon for the long drive to the Lake Huron shores of Grand Bend, where his family still owns a cottage at Beach O’ Pines, a mostly American enclave in the area.

“Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family’s hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon’s roof rack,” the Globe wrote of Romney, then a 36-year-old management consultant with Boston-based Bain and Company.

Romney constructed a special windshield for the carrier, “to make the ride more comfortable for the dog.” The contraption apparently wasn’t much of a success, however, as Seamus soon began to suffer gastric issues from his windy perch atop the car.

Romney’s oldest boy, Tagg, noticed the first sign of trouble, according to the Globe piece.

“Dad!” he yelled. “Gross!” A brown liquid was dripping down the back window of the station wagon.

Romney calmly dealt with the problem amid his boys’ howls of disgust, pulling into a service station to hose down Seamus and the car. He put the dog back in the crate and continued the drive to Ontario.

The story caused a flap when it was revealed four years ago.

“If you wouldn’t strap your child to the roof of your car, you have no business doing that to the family dog,” said Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “I don’t know who would find that acceptable.”

To Time magazine, she described the incident as “torture.”

And Barry's brother lives in a hut, who the fuck cares? My dog was a member of our family, but if he had diarhhea in the middle of a road trip he sure as hell wouldnt be sitting in the car.

Just b/c your folks did it with you doesn`t make it right.[:D]

It points to a cluelessness that most folks will see as a problem with one that hopes to run the country.

Animal cruelty is as animal cruelty does.

What's the big deal? You see that kind of stuff all the time in New England in the summer!
And dogs and kids in the back of pick-ups.
Do you guys in N.J. have seat belts for dogs and cats?

Owner59 -> RE: Mitt`s dog on car-roof goof won`t go away (12/11/2011 11:22:00 PM)

12 hours on a car roof.

You do that and well see if it`s no big deal.

lol

Too Cheap To Put The Dog In A Kennel...

Hillwilliam -> RE: Mitt`s dog on car-roof goof won`t go away (12/12/2011 5:58:14 AM)

As much as I love dogs, I don't see a hell of a lot of difference between that and riding with your dog in the back of a P/U truck except the truck is more dangerous.

The 'gastric distress' IMO had nothing to do with the ride.

As a wierd thought. Does this story bring up National Lampoon's Vacation where they put gramma on the room after she died in the car for anyone else?

Moonhead -> RE: Mitt`s dog on car-roof goof won`t go away (12/12/2011 6:05:29 AM)

No. Gramma didn't shit herself while she was up there, did she?

No no no....

It was a brilliant example of the man`s innovation,efficiency and thrift.

Unfortunately it`s a good example of the man`s lack of concern and nack of ignoring the suffering he`s caused.Just like in his business affairs.

If I saw a clown doing this on the highway,I`d basically make them pull over and/or call the police.

What about a truck with a kennel in the back riding in open air?

Stick your head out the window at 65 or so for just one hour.Then image that times 12.

The wind chill alone would make it very difficult if not impossible.Anyone who rides a motor bike knows how cold it gets even in mild weather when you`re doing 65 MPH.

In the back of a PU,the wind is blocked and goes over the cab.The cab takes the brunt of the wind.On a car roof however,anything up there takes the brunt.B/c of the car shape,the wind speed is concentrated.In a PU bed it`s legal.I don`t think it`s legal to tie an animal to a roof tho.

The question for me is why?Hair in the car.Mitt needed the room for the luggage?The dog was shitting itself?All real lame, weak and dumb reasons.

Sorry but the ACO (dog catcher) in my town would give them a choice of getting charged or surrendering the animal.He just did that with family who wasn`t caring for their dog correctly.

And yes this reminds me of the dead gramma tied to the roof in National Lamppoon`s movie.[:D]

And this scene too.

Maybe you didnt read this part of it. (Romney constructed a special windshield for the carrier, “to make the ride more comfortable for the dog.” )

Now, what's the difference between that and being in the back of a P/U?

Ha! "Won't go away." Then it says this "N.Y. Times "columnist" Gail Collins has mentioned this "two dozen times" evidently trying to keep this non-story going ,....for what purpose we don't know.
The N.Y. Times must feel it's such an *important story* that it needs to be written about 2 dozen times? Really, lol
(Mountain meet molehill)
What if they found c^&%d porn on Oblunder's computer? How many times whould she mention that I wonder?
"Hey Gail, BIG story!!!" HUGE!!"
"Oh sorry, I have an appointment to get a pedicure!"
Two dozen times! Now don't you think that's (in my best "Jimmy Canway" voice) *just a little excessive?* "Now, now, it's JUST A LITTLE excessive."
LOL, I told you last year that we'd be seeing stuff like this from the looney left!
"Mitt shows up to speaking function in,.........*UN-SHINED LOAFERS!!!!!" "GAAAAASP!!!!"
"Obama seen pulling a booger and eating it!" "No, No, No,.....kill that! Kill that!"

"The National Enquirer and The New York Times, ....the thinking man's newspapers."

Owner59 -> RE: Mitt`s dog on car-roof goof won`t go away (12/12/2011 11:23:08 AM)

Oh how terrible....a NYT reporter mentioned it......

Vote for Mitt!

I just heard it and it wasn`t in the Times.So there.[:D]

I also heard Mitt try to claim this heat was on him because he had the rodeo at the Olympics.......what a fuck`n bullshitter.

To Bill,

What if the clever and ever so efficient Mitt didn`t tie the damm thing on right and it fell off at high speed?

What if it rained?

If fact,anyone who wants to prove me wrong`s gonna have to ride in a kennel on top a stationwagon for at least an hour at 65 and I promise to check my knot-work reaaaaal good.[;)]

What Mitt did was absolutely ridiculous and fucked up.

Period.

Yeah, you see those down here all the time. They use dogs to hunt wild boar here.
Or,...............a clown car full of lefties.
Boy, they're really *reaching* going after Mitt.
I wonder what they're going to say when the women come out of the woodwork saying Oblunder sexually abused them at Columbia?
"Ha! Obama didn't go to Columbia!"
"Oh,..........wait,........he did." I think."
"All of his "friends" at Columbia have all died, ergo no "friends" while at Columbia."

mnottertail -> RE: Mitt`s dog on car-roof goof won`t go away (12/12/2011 1:41:27 PM)

They should have used those dogs to hunt down illegal aliens since the coast guard was to busy shirking its duty for the last 30 years or so.

Winterapple -> RE: Mitt`s dog on car-roof goof won`t go away (12/12/2011 3:42:37 PM)

I think this is appalling. Completely lacking in
judgement and cruel. Is it legal to do this?
And while I sometimes think Ingrid Newkirk
is an extremist I agree with her. If you
wouldn't do it to your kid or your grandma
don't do it to a animal.
He's Mr Moneybags and he couldn't afford
to kennel the dog or hire a dog sitter?
The poor dog. Some dogs freak out at
traffic noises in the car. This poor animal
is trapped on the roof of a moving vehicle
for hours. Disoriented and so scared he's
shitting himself. Mitt really is made of plastic.
I've ridden in the back of pick ups. I rode
in one with my parents two dogs recently.
But it was down a country road for a couple
of miles. Still not the greatest idea but not
like being on the interstate for hours strapped
to a roof.
In the country you see dogs in the back of
pick ups on country roads or poking around
in a small town but not like you once did.
Most are in the cab with their owners.
And the ones I see in the back of pick ups
are chillin and enjoying the view. Not shitting
themselves or jumping into traffic.
But if that was illegal I would understand why.
But strapping a living creature to your car like
he was a kayak or a dead deer is repulsive.

dare I ask?.. How did they get the dog home on the return trip???

I really wish Canada hadn't been mentioned so much.. [&:]
