David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader, white supremacist and Louisiana politician, was arrested and taken into custody in Cologne on Friday, prior to a planned speech to a right-wing extremist group, German police said Monday.

The statement by the Cologne police department said that Duke, 61, is "obliged to leave German territory without delay." In a message on his website, Duke said he had been released from jail and requested financial assistance from his followers to fight the deportation.

"To fight this case will cost a lot of money, time and effort," he wrote.

The arrest appears to be tied to Duke's expulsion from the Czech Republic in 2009, following his detention there on suspicion of denying the Holocaust, a crime in many European countries, including Germany. The Cologne police statement said that Duke "was not entitled to stay in Germany" because of a travel ban against him in another, unspecified European country.

A lot of folks don't realize that when you leave the Unites States behind, you also leave your constitutional rights behind. You're in their playground playing with their ball and you will follow their rules. He should consider himself lucky.

WHen you put it that way Violet, I get what you are saying, but it was his decision to go to germany where they have their rules and requirements regarding the holocaust. Hes getting much less than he deserves in my mind, but then its a good job I dont have my own country:)

Violet, I'm 100% pro- the free expression of ideas. The more the merrier from where I sit. Sorry, but I do draw a line at the expression and incitement of hate. Which is what this vicious individual and his odious message is all about.

What do you think would happen if I came to the US and violate the US constitution and break laws? Wanna bet that they would deport my backside in a heartbeat? Due to the Hitler's reign and the resulting crimes Germany is very sensitive on the issue, and it isn't that an idea is suppressed, what he did would equate to somebody claiming that slavery never happened in America and it's a vicious lie that black people are spreading - I somehow doubt that it would be well received.

A wonderful idealistic way of looking at things violet,but given Germany's unique history,and the attendant national quilt over said history,their laws concerning hate speech and Holocaust denial speech is perfectly understandable and actually commendable.

Don't get me wrong, David Duke certainly deserves a hot-sauce enema, and Germany's ban of such things is nothing if not understandable, but I get uncomfortable when people start banning ideas, because if the winds change and the wrong person gets into power, MY ideas might get me in trouble.

Outrageous. David Duke has the right believe in what wants to believe regardless of the FACTS, EVIDENCE, and PROOF that things reality happened. If man wants to believe that the moon is made of green cheese, babies come from storks, or that holocaust didnt happen, that is his RIGHT. It should NEVER be a crime to reject reality and substitute you own based on whatever you want to believe. All you liberals and progressives with your "Facts", "Evidence", and "Proof" can take it and shove it. If man choose to live in a fantasy reality, that should be his right.

He can think whatever he pleases. He can choose whatever model of reality he likes. He can say whatever he likes at home or to his friends. These things are not at stake in this instance.

Duke chose to articulate his hate in the public sphere in a foreign country and that's quite another matter.

He chose to visit Germany - a country with particular history, sensitivities and laws in this area that he chose to point two fingers at - to articulate his hate in a public place. Germany very wisely declined to offer him a platform from which to spew his hate.

An American parallel might be defending Osama bin Laden's 'right' to conduct a speaking tour in Manhattan .... Is that the type of thing you'd like to defend? No doubt your voice was raised loudly to defend the building of the mosque in NYC ....... yeah sure.

No surprise is it that Duke's apologists are found on the Right side of politics, the same side of politics that has traditionally nurtured, defended and promoted racism, and opposed virtually every anti-racist measure adopted everywhere in the West.
