Long may it continue

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 8:29:54 AM)

Fantabulous ^_^ it'll be great to see what it can do and what it reports back, whether or not it finds any evidence of life.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 8:31:49 AM)

I am sure that someone can tell me how this might help all of mankind in some way in the future, but, until then, I just think this is a huge waste of my tax-dollars.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 8:36:00 AM)

I understand your point but you might not be if they discover He3

Winterapple -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 9:34:12 AM)

It's not a waste of taxpayer dollars.
It's something Americans if not all mankind
should be proud of.
The discovery of life on Mars would be one
of the greatest discoveries in human history.
The knowledge that Mars could sustain human
life and a manned mission to Mars and a
possible colony there would be and even
greater achievement.
Mankind goes forward or it falls backward.

GreedyTop -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 9:44:44 AM)

if life is found on Mars, then that makes it more likely that humans can develop a way to exist on Mars.. worth exploring, IMO, given the current and future population on Earth...

YMMV.

This!

Without moving this to P&R I will say
I would change the federal budget BIG TIME,
but I would find the money for science and exploration.

stellauk -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 11:59:07 AM)

I wonder if this has got anything to do with the Tea Party.

Outlier, perhaps your solution is better than my simplistic, knee-jerk reaction of "NO WAY, NO HOW," which was predicated upon the belief there are far more urgent and pressing matters on this big, ole, rock that need resolving, that would benefit enormously were the money funneled in their direction, and to first fix our own wordly plane before moving onto others. More of the case as when one lacks discretionary income when their most basic food, shelter, medical, etc., needs, are not met, and that to divert critical funds to buy Manolo Blahnik shoes is foolhardy, with suicidal undertones. But, I see that is neither your premise nor intent.

Spinoffs (many of which are unintentional) from the space progrtam permeate every facet of modern life these days.

A lot of the things we take for granted started there.

GreedyTop -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 12:09:46 PM)

hear, hear, Hilly!

(and heart, heart!!) (I originally typoed it that way...LOL)

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 12:11:00 PM)

I appreciate how easy it is foe a brit to like the US to spend what little spare cash it has in space but I'm talking as that little kid who was taken out that night to have the moon pointed out by his father who was holding me in his arms to be told that at that very moment a man was walking upon it.
I cannot be the only kid who was inspired to become interested in the sciences & engineering because of that night. I cried when the last shuttle mission was completed because as a species we should be pushing further & further to gain new knowledge & ask yet more questions that my sons generation will have to answer. I appreciate that this mission may well feed all the starving in some part of the world but I wouldn't halt space exploration to do this.

It is the same quest/ drive that set Columbus upon the seas & the mountain men heading west into the sunset.
My kid has NASA as his homepage. I hope he is inspired the same way I was.

GreedyTop -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 12:16:02 PM)

Nine.. until I realized I was to physically inept ( medically... and then made it worse in my teens/20s/and a bit later), I SO wanted to be an astronaut!!

hell..test pilot woulda been cool, if I had qualified....

I recognize, appreciate and honor the distinctions, and sometimes incongruity, between both the masculine compulsion and desire to explore and conquer, and the feminine desire to first support, nurture and extend benefits to the "family" at hand, and in doing so, neither say nor imply this is simple a male vs. female divide, as we all embody both to one degree or another.

Finding and striking the balance between the two is a timely and worthy goal.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 12:18:58 PM)

I never wanted that. Just to build the damn things

My lottery prezzie will be Washington DC for the Smithsonian & then to the Kennedy center in FLA.

Right!! Where would we be without Tang??

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 12:21:39 PM)

I agree with outlier and Hill, it's not a waste, these things benefit us more than we know.

GreedyTop -> RE: Thank you U.S.A (11/26/2011 12:22:23 PM)

*swats Hlen*

sheesh, woman.. is tang REALLY all you can pull up??

LOL

(Contemplating a swatting.....[:)]) yep, and I'm thinking furiously!!!

But don't you think the tang line was funny?

Seriously, I'm glad we're continuing some space exploration other than hitching rides with the Russians!!
