I am sure that someone can tell me how this might help all of mankind in some way in the future, but, until then, I just think this is a huge waste of my tax-dollars.

It's not a waste of taxpayer dollars. It's something Americans if not all mankind should be proud of. The discovery of life on Mars would be one of the greatest discoveries in human history. The knowledge that Mars could sustain human life and a manned mission to Mars and a possible colony there would be and even greater achievement. Mankind goes forward or it falls backward.

if life is found on Mars, then that makes it more likely that humans can develop a way to exist on Mars.. worth exploring, IMO, given the current and future population on Earth... YMMV.

Spinoffs (many of which are unintentional) from the space progrtam permeate every facet of modern life these days. A lot of the things we take for granted started there.

I appreciate how easy it is foe a brit to like the US to spend what little spare cash it has in space but I'm talking as that little kid who was taken out that night to have the moon pointed out by his father who was holding me in his arms to be told that at that very moment a man was walking upon it. I cannot be the only kid who was inspired to become interested in the sciences & engineering because of that night. I cried when the last shuttle mission was completed because as a species we should be pushing further & further to gain new knowledge & ask yet more questions that my sons generation will have to answer. I appreciate that this mission may well feed all the starving in some part of the world but I wouldn't halt space exploration to do this. It is the same quest/ drive that set Columbus upon the seas & the mountain men heading west into the sunset. My kid has NASA as his homepage. I hope he is inspired the same way I was.

Nine.. until I realized I was to physically inept ( medically... and then made it worse in my teens/20s/and a bit later), I SO wanted to be an astronaut!! hell..test pilot woulda been cool, if I had qualified....

I recognize, appreciate and honor the distinctions, and sometimes incongruity, between both the masculine compulsion and desire to explore and conquer, and the feminine desire to first support, nurture and extend benefits to the "family" at hand, and in doing so, neither say nor imply this is simple a male vs. female divide, as we all embody both to one degree or another. Finding and striking the balance between the two is a timely and worthy goal.
