You're right. Also the very material that the shuttle tiles are made of is an innovation in ceramics.

I'm with Duskypearls (love your posts on this subject by the way!!!! <smiles>) and JstAnothersub.... X one gazillion!!!!

Of course if you consider adhesives, ceramic tile, velcro, teflon, etc. etc. etc. to be of greater importance than menial things such as:

Curing Cancer, AIDS, Premature Birth Defects, Childhood and Adult Obesity (now the SECOND leading killer in our country and the major reason your healthcare premiums are going up...bet you didn't realize that!), Heart Disease, Flesh-Eating Disease, Severe Head Injuries, etc. etc.

Feeding children who are going hungry in our own country (the U.S.), and the list continues forever.

And by all means "plan ahead to the next planet." It will just give us a brand new planet to "destroy and devastate with every passing second of the day!"

I know what I am about to say sounds far fetched and fanatic….But…if we do not learn how to leave this planet and populate other heavenly bodies we are doomed to extinction. Not important to us but it could be to our great great grandchildren. Although this is not of course a manned probe it will still provide important information on space travel.

In the mean time the technological innovations spurred by these type endeavors may pay off in more practical applications.

I do realize that. This is not a zero sum situation. I agree all the things you listed are important but sometimes you can make lemonade (tech advantages) from lemons (conflict and HUGE expenditures necessary for space exploration). Is the world going to be perfect if the money for space is used on strictly practical needs? No.

Is the world more knowledgable from space exploration? Of course. With off earth equipment we can see and PROVE that we are losing our ozone layer. Will that wake up the "first" and developing worlds? Let's hope.

I'd like to believe that gaining knowledge throught exploration would lead us to the solutions we need to clean up the mess we have made so far. We could thrive on THIS planet more fairly and equitably.

ETA: Why do you think this planet is doomed? To paraphrase Michael Crichton, the Planet is not in peril, We are.

There is always a trade off, someones or things will lose out on what is needed in order for resources to go towards research to benefit the common good. Thank goodness for the space program, as great strides have been made in the shuttle missions in order to iimprove the quality of life for mankind.

I feel the timing is off for this particular mission, finding life on Mars. If our country was in better economic health, with fewer people in need, i'd be saying cool, should be interesting. But right now, i just feel we have bigger fish to fry. just my opinion

And then on the other hand, if we do not learn responsibility and stewardship, the lack of which is and will continue to lead to our extinction, while on and about this planet and for those who inhabit it, we are doomed to take our bad habits and practices to wherever else we go. We can run, but we cannot hide from ourselves. We can only pull the wool over our own eyes for so long before consequences become dire and inescapable. Perhaps we are nearing that point, and need reassess our priorities.

Granted, this is true. Yet very few of them are things we cannot live without, and in fact, have managed to do so, quite well, up until the time such things were available.

if you want to save humanity from itself then turn technology off, all of it everywhere. Stop using the planetary resources. Then watch the population drop to a sustainable level as the planet renews itself.
