While you're waving your flags and pontificating about "American exceptionalism" - some of your fellow Americans will celebrate Veterans Day trying to find a park bench to sleep on this evening...

And they'll still be looking for a place to sleep and a meal to eat on November 12th, November 13th, November 14th, November 15th, November 16th...

Happy Veterans Day

I served in I Corps, Republic Of Viet-Nam 1970-1971.

I was one of those homeless Veterans from 1976 to 1978. Luck, the Veterans Adminstration and loved ones helped me get back on my feet - despite American conservatives.

Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?
quote:

Once in Army suits,
Gee, we looked swell,
Full of that yankee-doodly-dum.
Half a million boots went slogging through hell
And I was the kid with the drum.

Say, don't you remember, they called me "Al".
It was "Al" all the time.
Why don't you remember,
I'm your pal?
Buddy, can you spare a dime?

And the American conservatives answer the question "Buddy, can you spare a dime?" by saying "Not one dime if it comes out of my taxes. Get a job, you bum!"

Seems a no brained to me...where you will get blowback is the assertion that it is the conservatives that are responsible for the situation.
They are our veterans....all of ours, both parties have failed them miserably .
We,the American people are ,in the end, responsible for this situation...it would be nice if we could fix it.

And if people don't celebrate they will have a place to sleep? What do you have against veterans anyway?

How did you get that from his OP ? My take was the OP was pointing out how veterans get treated.

It isnt much better this side of the pond either.

And at that time I was in the Sixth Fleet in the Med chasing the Russians around.
A very good organization that I donate to is The New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court st, Boston, Mass 02108.
"Despite American conservatives?"
There's a lot of conservatives at that shelter!
What did Jimmy Carter do for our Veterans between '76 and 80'?
Did Ted Kennedy and "Fast Eddy" Ed Markey ever stop by the shelter for a "photo-op?"

What a crock of shit…I’ve never understood why a priority has not been placed on reintroducing our veterans to civilian life…Training and planning for this reintroduction should be part of the enlistment.

There are of course companies both private and public that give preferential treatment to vets but not enough.

I don’t believe vets are being singled out but they often miss that time of their lives where they still have support of their parents as they ease into the working world. They are at a disadvantage because they miss this experience and must compete with those that were able to gain work experience in civilian entry level jobs.

I'm glad for the veterans day threads. I'm reminded to leave work early, drive down to an anonymous little corner tavern and slip the bartender enough to buy every vet in the place a cold one to anonymously say "thank you for your service".

They've never yet figured out who it was buying and the bartender ain't talkin cause I tip good.

In the late 1970s, some American companies had a policy of NOT hiring Viet-Nam Veterans, alleging that they were all psychos, drug addicts or both.

Even American Legion and Veterans Of Foreign Wars posts turned away Korea and Viet-Nam vets until just a few years ago, claiming "You lost your wars".

And Ayn Rand worshippers like the GOPs Eric Cantor and GOP/Libertarian/Tea Partier Rand Paul want to gut the Veterans Administration and cut military pensions, claiming it's a waste of taxpayers’ money - probably because they never spent a day in uniform.

Too many Americans “honor” their military veterans once a year for about 5 minutes each November 11 by saying out of one side of their mouth “Thank you for your service” – while out of the other side of their mouth the other 364 days a year they say, “Don’t tax a penny of my hard-earned or inherited dollars for educational programs, housing, medical care, etc. for veterans - let the Salvation Army take care of them.”

And there were some companies that had a policy of favoring Vietnam (there is no hyphen, are you sure you're a vet?) veterans, recognizing their leadership and experiences would be beneficial. So what's your point?

I was lucky…my employer would not only hold your job but also credit time to pension and pay increases. I stepped right back into my job after 4 years of service…not all employers were asses.

Well I am a conservative and a Republican and not only do I work within a non-profit helping out homeless veterans and getting them access to resources that can best assist them, but I also donate my free time in the evenings and on weekends to assist with clothing drives, food programs, and community connections to help them get hired. So do not lump all of us conservatives and Republicans into one negative category.

*Note: It appears this posting says that it was in response to kdsub. It was not and no slight was intended towards them because of it.
