...FR...

I rarely give My number out no matter if its online or in person. I don't like talking on the phone much unless its somebody that doesn't annoy the fuck out of Me.

I just don't meet people off the internet, I meet them in real life. We meet, we talk, if I like them we exchange emails, we chat and meet a few more times, then we exchange phone numbers. There's no hard and fast rule for it, but that is the general pattern.

Of course, not being in the market for a romantic or sexual relationship, my situation is a little different.

LadyHibiscus: Follow the 'More' menu tab to 'Google Voice' when you are signed into Gmail (which is also a broader Google account). You can also get there by entering 'voice.google.com' into your browser's address bar. You'll learn the most by going there and exploring it for yourself, but here are some of the highlights...

When setting up a Google telephone number you can choose any area code and local exchange, then select from available numbers. Alternately, you can choose the last four digits you like, then select from available local exchanges.

If you have a newish computer, then you can make and receive calls over the computer similar to Skype. Free domestic calls and opportunity to make international calls for a fee. Messages appear on the Google Voice page like email. Google transcribes the message (often with amusing errors) so you can read it or play it back through the web page like any audio file.

Other call options include: forwarding calls to your Google number to another number so you can answer them on your home or cell phone; using the Google Voice web page to dial someone's number and tie the call your other phone--only entering the phone number is done online, so it works even if your computer is old. As far as I can tell, the Google Voice number is displayed on the recipient's caller ID regardless of the method of call (but test it for yourself).

There is also a Google Voice iPhone app that does not make calls but is good for retrieving messages or free texting.
