MercTech -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 2:44:34 PM)

I'd rather have the first chat via Skype or an IM voice chat service.
I'd rather not have my home or cell phone in the hands of someone I haven't had a chance to get to know better.  And, this is a learned behavior.  Chatting on the phone with someone and IM and email but if they have a predilection for drunk dialing at 3am when I have to work the next day I'd rather they didn't have a number I can't block.  So, I don't give out my number any more until I'm more sure of a person's habits.

Then again it is also a quality check... If they can't figure out how to do a free voip service, could they keep up with me over the long haul.

LOL! I am KNOWN for not answering my phone, or returning calls!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that.  I'd rather deal with a person face-to-face or via messenger.  Of course when I was courting Chatte, I was in Alaska and she was in North Carolina, which made phone calls pretty pricey.  To quote Hannah, I hate fucking phones.

Kaliko -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 3:29:38 PM)

I don't like giving out my phone number.

1. I am naively romantic enough to get hooked on a voice before meeting. Bad news to go into a first meeting with the knowledge that they've already made me swoon.

2. I just hate the phone. I am so much better in person, with eye contact and someone being able to see how I talk with my hands all the time. The phone is simply not a good representation of "me."

3. I have acquiesced on giving out my number enough to know that when I do give out my number, more often than not, he takes that as a sense of entitlement to use that number anytime he pleases.

4. I would like to stress again number 1.

MissToYouRedux -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 3:44:54 PM)

I'm not a phone person in general and have had too many *one-handed* conversations in the past, so I move from virtual chemistry to face-to-face chemistry... or not. [;)]

That was in the bad old days before cell phones or cheapie long distance. I remember we talked once a week, for an hour. It was all we could afford.

As far as giving out my number, I have often. It's not an issue for me, I screen all my calls and only answer my cell if I'm traveling. I've yet to come across a potential sub who DARED to call me w/o permission. LOL

Course, my numbers are in LO's name, so anyone trying to find me thinks I'm a big hairy smart guy, not the charming, gorgeous female genius that *I* am.

DesFIP -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 4:43:44 PM)

I wouldn't feel comfortable exchanging phone numbers after the first email though.
If it was too soon for her, then it was too soon for her. The fact that it wasn't soon enough for him just shows they aren't compatible in this.

However many people don't want to give out their cell early on because if the other person starts stalking you, then you have all the trouble of changing your number and telling everyone you know why you had to change it.

People don't think about getting a second number just for meeting online, which is the easiest way to handle it. One of those noncontract numbers from Radio Shack.

littlewonder -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 5:43:56 PM)

I rarely talk on the phone and only have about 10 to 15 numbers in my contacts and only two that I talk to on a daily basis or almost daily...Master and my daughter. Even my daughter and i don't talk...we text and we probably talk on the phone for about 5 mins about 3 times a week. If I don't know the number it goes straight to voicemail. If no vm is left then I look it up online to see who it is. If it's a business that I have no dealings with or someone I don't want to talk to it immediately gets blocked. Otherwise I call them back whenever I feel like it if at all. I just simply don't enjoy calls and most times it just feels awkward. If I have the option of email I take that. Don't really enjoy face to face time much either. Thank gawd for online classes lol. If that didn't exist I'd probably never finish college lol.

Winterapple -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 5:57:58 PM)

Unless it's just a casual online flirty thing
I want to progress to phone calls.
I don't think I could meet anyone in
person without hearing their voice.
It makes them more tangible, doesn't
mean they can't be full of it or there
will be any face to face chemistry but
you can pluck a few things from a voice.
If you want to be cautious get a throw
away phone and some minute cards from
Walgreens.
Only a handful of people know my personal
private number and no one I don't know
well and in real life. Voicemail and caller
id filter the rest. Everybody should have a
maybe I will maybe I won't number.
I understand the stalking thing only to
well but stalkers exist online and offline.
You can be to paranoid as readily as to
reckless.
I don't see that lengthy online exchanges
or lengthy phone calls are worth much.
Real life is the test.

Master and I chatted online for most of a whole day. I gave him my work number and He called me there the next day. We spoke a few minutes, I gave him my home number and, from then on, He called me on that one. Until He bought me a cell phone, put me on His plan and mailed me the phone to use to speak with Him. No paranoia. But then I'm not all melodramatic either. Most people think their digits mean alot more to others than they really do, I fear........luci

Obviously, my reaction was Wha? How are you going to talk without a phone number? Staying online forever until you get a DNA sample?

So, friends and foes, what's up with this? Am I a crazy old stegosaurus for exchanging numbers with someone I like well enough to want to TALK TO IN REAL TIME? Is it insane to give out my email address? (or chat, back when I did that...)

I am of the mind that the internet is all well and good, but if the person passes my initial "is he a douche" scan, I want to TALK to them, not endlessly exchange cmail. If I make a date, I want to have that person's number, and them mine---what if we get stuck in traffic, or get lost?

I have been known to exchange phone numbers/email addy's etc with a person after only an hour in real life...the same on here. I have no issues with it.

Personally, and this is only my opinion...but personally, I think people are just too fucking paranoid. Seriously people, you really are not ALL THAT [&:]

JanahX -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 8:25:49 PM)

When I see something special .. Its game ON. They say the right things in the right way and its time to get the ball rollin'. I give my number up ... no problem, cause thats gonna open up the bridge for me anyways ... on if its going to go to the next level... meeting.

My ALL TIME favorite .. is when some douche goes into "insta-meet" mode:... LETS MEET FOR DRINKS. - (second or third message) no basic info exchange, no picture, first name .. nothing. Im like .. wtf? Whats WRONG WITH YOU? If I could, I would take a big red stamp and stamp on their foreheads: GEEK

SailingBum -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 8:31:45 PM)

More like I dont care how interesting you are if you don't give me your # when I ask for it I'm gone.

Missokyst -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 8:55:59 PM)

FR
lol weird. It is either you are too careful and possible paranoid, or you feel a connection at first message and give up the goods.
What about MAYBE they are just not interested?
I can count on one hand the number of men who interested me enough to continue chatting.
It has nothing to do with paranoia. It has everything to do with timing and delivery.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 8:57:29 PM)

Thanks for the array of input!

I don't just toss my number out there, but if I am interested in meeting, I push for face time. Most sub males are flakes, so that takes care of them. I have never had a problem with anyone misusing my number. If we don't hit it off, we both move on, and that's that.

NuevaVida -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/9/2011 10:36:51 PM)

He and I communicated via email only for about a month, before I offered up my phone number. It's not a paranoia thing, though.  I don't have a land line, just a cell phone.  My cell phone remains on 24/7 because I have an elderly mother who lives alone, and I'm her primary phone call if something is wrong.

I don't particularly like talking on the phone. I rarely answer if it rings, unless it's from a few key people.  I didn't want to be giving my number to someone who might think it's ok to call late at night, or while I'm at work, or from someone who might end up blowing up my phone with text messages.  I don't like being bugged, so I'm particular about who I give my number to.

Epytropos -> RE: Phone Numbers & Suchlike (11/10/2011 1:56:48 AM)

I more or less despise chat, and email/cmail is not a far cry better. Personally I'm far more likely to get on video chat than give out my number or get someone else's, but at the same time I'm in no way timid about giving out my phone either. I think people's tendency to think of the internet as a dark and scary place is irrational - I see no reason that it should be any more dangerous than normal human interactions. Surely everyone here has given their number to someone in a club or a coffee shop after only an hour or two of conversation, right?
