Status: offline 		I dropped by the Occupy Ottawa site today and there was almost no visible police presence at all. Just a few city cops here and there and a Mountie or two around the area, mostly just standing around singly or in pairs chatting with protesters and passersby. The one time I know of the police entering the park it was because they were called in by the protesters to deal with some health emergency.

There are now occupations and demonstrations in about 20 cities across Canada involving several thousand people and over 10 days. And to date there have been 2 arrests. TWO!!! No other arrests, no confrontations, no raids, no riot gear, no tear gas, no rubber bullets, no clubbing protesters in the street, nobody in the hospital with a fractured skull and swelling brain.

Why on earth are the police in the States reacting this way? It just makes no sense. Right from the start they approached the OWS as an enemy, something to be crushed and broken. This in the land of "We the people"? I am honestly stunned and saddened, and even more, I am sickened by it. It is a great disappointment, it really does seem as if all the talk of liberty and freedom was a sham after all. It is starting to look like freedom of speech only applies to those who say what the rich want them to say.

<The Occupation site is directly across the road from the City Hall and the Provincial courthouse, presumably both sites deemed worth protecting. Here's the police line defending that side of the site, no not my picture, I'll try get downtown and take a few myself in the next few days>

Because they are told too. Yeah, a few may take it over the line, but the majority are simply following orders.

I hope the police action inspires more people to protest against their behaviour peacefully, but realistically, I see agitators, provocators and secret/political agitators to make the most of it.

Actually, during the G20 here in Pittsburgh, I saw many cops laughing and talking to protesters. There was an underlying air of tension.... but we had numerous world leaders here, the train station not far from the meetings and thousands coming in to protest.

The transit was a nightmare with all the rerouting. Keep in mind, one person managed 50,000 worth of damage to store fronts and bank buildings before he was arrested. While the cops appeared relaxed, you still could feel the tension.

It truly could have been worse.

Status: offline 		Sorry hon, I was just talking about the riots in toronto and the cops here have had no end of issues, but are getting away with most of it.
So far, they are doing ok, but people are watching carefully.

Two different cultures, two different attitudes..

Yes, it sickens me too. Yup, its a sham but Americans believe it. Most dont know any different. They would have to have lived in a freer country to realize it and see that difference.

Some of us see the sham that it is... while living in America. Others see the sham and embrace it for personal gains.

Stop assuming things about "Americans".

The fact that I agree with this just goes to show how deeply my illusions about America have been shattered in the last few weeks. To me the U.S. was always the place to emulate, the shining example. Now it is looking more and more like a negative example, America seems to be what every free country must guard against becoming.

For God's sake they are beating people and putting them in the hospital just for saying they don't like the way things are going!

Myanmar, Iran, Pakistan, China, America. The differences are rapidly diminishing in the eyes of the world.

Some believe we can insist on how Libya is run.... yet I bet you will have many post on this one declaring no one should tell the US how to run this country.

I was just thinking about Tiananmen Square and wondering how close to that it will get with these protests...

The image of freedom is what is also fed to the world, media-wise. I knew even before moving here that it wasnt nearly as free as many think it is, mostly from reading about pot laws and how they view medical pot, how they seize assets of people for the most minor offenses or even the innocent. The govt and enforcers are heavy handed, most are by the book, no exceptions, no humanity in them at all.. And there is corruption in govt. The amount of that is quite shocking imo.

I thought you were talking about there. Here, I was just pointing out that it wasnt that bad, but could have been far worse.

I just adore countries who stand in judgement of each other.

I suspect you are right. I'm not really trying to tell anybody how to run their country, I am more just expressing my profound shock at the difference between the image and the reality. I'm appalled by what I am seeing, I've been brought to tears by it several times.

It's sort of like how you feel when you finally see a picture of some famous super-model without the 3-hour makeup session, only greater by several magnitudes. The truth is ugly, and I don't like it at all. Like I said I am deeply saddened by it. I'm rather hurt as well, some of my innocence has died over the last month, and I'll never get it back. The world has just become colder, uglier, and a lot meaner.

I'm just terribly disillusioned. One of my greatest heroes has turned out to have feet of clay. Well, I feel worse than that really, but that metaphor will have to do for now.

There is another problem, and that is that the US govt tries to get other countries to follow their lead, and sometimes they use financial threats and other methods of intimidation to get other countries to capitulate. The whole you're either with us or against us thing and 9/11 has given them the same club to use on other countries as their own people.

Protests or not, I dont see the US becoming freer, I see the opposite happening.
