Status: offline 		I know what I want to do, but I kind of want some feed back from others that are not passionately interested in this situation.

After 9 months being unemployed, I have a job offer in my hand. Job starts November 7th. It is what they are calling a tier three customer support position. There is no tech involved in the job, its simply handling calls for a bank's internal customers and making sure that they get the right information for an issue with a customer.

HOWEVER. I have a job interview tomorrow that I have a 50/50 shot at. There is me and one other person up for the job.

This Job if offered to me would be more money, purely technical in nature (I am a computer tech by trade) offer me a chance to improve my skills and would let me use the skills I have to a very deep and rich job opportunity.

here's where some of my conflict is. The bank job would have an assload of benefits, be only 8 miles from my home. I have that job in hand starting on Nov 7

the tech job is 26.4 miles from home but will pay me 32k a year and have much of the same benes

If you are offered both what would you do?????

Status: offline 		you have the one job. You don't have the other..you only have an interview. That doesn't mean you have the job.

Take the job you have been offered....for now. Go to the job interview for the other. If they offer you the job THEN you have a decision to make..until then I don't see the conflict.

Status: offline 		I dunno how to say this gently, but I have gotten the impression based on your past posts that your communication skills aren't quite up to par.  So the bank job has two strikes against it:

1. I expect the banking sector is due for a nasty fall soon, and the last hired will be out the door.
2. It would involve working with people and communication, which is not your strong suit.

In other words, it wouldn't last.

Commuting is a PITA but in this case, I'd say take the tech job.

I'm an orthodox lazy person. Commuting is against my religion in the first place, and commuting an extra 180 miles a week would be an engraved invitation to hell.

Status: offline 		I would probably take the tech job you are interviewing for tomorrow if you are offered it. It sounds like you aren't really interested in the bank gig. The tech job is a longer commute but for better pay so those sorta balance out. In the end you'll be doing something you'll probably enjoy more.

Status: offline 		Consider the long range security of both jobs.
How long were your predecessors employed in those positions?
Why did they leave? or Were they let go and why?
Is the second job $32k? or $32k more per year?
Take a close comparison of the benes and what you have to pay for each including out of pocket co-pays.
Take a good look at the overall atmosphere of each job. In the past I have been much happier at jobs that payed less, but I have also had good paying jobs that I enjoyed too.

Status: offline 		you're a tech, take the fucking tech job. the other one is a glorified receptionist and you'll be fucking bored. go with what you fucking like doing.

the only drawback to the tech job is its 18 miles further away, we're talking 20 minutes more commute. that's fuck all.

look man you're a tech, people like us were born to do that shit, its in our fucking blood and you know it. sure we may take time off, but we can't stay away from the game for long.  you already fucking know what the answer is, so go with your heart. good luck on the interview.

Status: offline 		Enjoying the game yet ? The way I see the board set is thus : DS is right that the better job is the right choice, however you must consider the stability of that company. Of course it's not like the bank job is a guaranteed lifelong positon either. You really need to consider the prospects of these companies having large scale cutbacks or actually failing in the near future. Banking is not quite what it once was. What's more in that position you are probably more expendable for someone's son in law or something. A good fight is OK, but work is nowhere to have it.

Now this 50/50 chance, are you sure it's 50/50 ? Do you know anything about the other candidate ? Weigh this carefully.

Personally, I would hope the interview does not coincide with your first days at the bank job. See you could just take it pending the other job, but you don't tell them that. If you can get the inteview but not the result before the seventh, go to the interview. If the interview will interfere with your job, figure something out. Is the schedule set ? Is it for sure that it is a conflict ? If so how far in the future ?

Sidestep. Some how sidestep.

To all, the goal is to keep as many options as possible open at all times. Both of these jobs could be duds. And 32K is not that much, but that's what they're paying. Don't expect much loyalty from anyone unless you really did something, like founded the company or something like that.

Somehow work both in. You have to know when the interview is in advance, just tell this place that you need off right then and take care of it. They call you in again get a start date and don't say you can start immediately. Give as much notice as you can and tell them you understand why they don't hire overqualified people.

To make the best impression, get the idea across that you undersatnd their side of the desk. That means to know why they need done what they need done, all that. If you have tio leave a new job in a week or something, do your damndest to leave on great terms, to hopefully leave on neutral terms.

It's a dog eat dog world out there.

Status: offline 		depends where you live. At my former job in PA when there was an IT job open the most I ever saw one pay was $36K.

Status: offline 		If the tech job is offered to you, take it, but don't waffle and lose out on both jobs while waiting for opprotunity to knock, if they aren't going to offer you the tech job right off, go with the one that is offered.

Did you mean $32 K flat or $32 K more?

I'd be willing to undergo the pain of commuting for a job that was going to give me more job satisfaction, even if the salaries were equal.

DS has a good point about last hired first fired for banking jobs.

Lemme think.....uhhhhh.....9 months unemployed.....hmmmm....well, (this is just me but) I'D TAKE THE FIRST GAWWWDAMMED JOB THAT WAS OFFERED ME.

Also, since you still have a good week with nothing else going, hop in your car, and drive the trip to the farther job, at the times you would be doing it. Understand exactly what you would be getting into, with that commute. Is it a clear sail, extra 20 minutes, or are you looking at a daily two hours (total) of stop and go, traffic hell?

For a while on my last job, I was commuting 100 miles, one way, every day, and never could get that damn drive under 1:07 (and I had to leave early enough to have breakfast at Denny's before work to do that). Then it was 45 miles I could do in 35 minutes, easy. Currently 20 miles, in a comfortable 15-18 minutes. I've also had 14 miles that could take damn near an hour.
