So I finally got around to reading Sex in the Bedroom and 120 Days of Sodom around a year ago, and ever since then something has been bothering me about it. It seems to lack sincerity, the ring of truth. In short, as our friends across the pond would say, it seems to be taking the piss. I'm sure many if not most of you have read one or both, so I was hoping you could give input on that theory. Does it seem to you that De Sade seems to be writing a satire of Voltaire, or perhaps of the need for moral virtue itself? Given his history, it's hard to imagine he's trying to come down on the side of traditionalism, but I could definitely see an argument for his mocking Voltaire's apparent need to develop an ethical framework for hedonism and libertinism as opposed to just getting his dick wet from hell to breakfast. Thoughts?
