I dream in full color, movie length epic adventures!  No, really......the detail in some of my dreams is amazing, yet there are dreams where I'm with a person that I appear to know intimately, yet, they have no face.  I don't have nightmares much, when I do, it's usually because I'm stressed and shit "gets through".  My sister and I have had nearly identical dreams about a half dozen times in our lives, and when that happens, it's usually involves death or injury to anyone in it.  We knew our grandma was going to die about a week before she actually did...which sucked, cuz I was 9 and my sister 8, we thought it was just a nightmare.

The disturbing dreams I have involve signals pointing to a loss of control on my part.  The most realistic one is where my teeth are literally crumbling out of my gums.  And I can FEEL each little piece of tooth rolling around in my mouth, and each one breaking apart.  The first thing I do when I wake up is run my tongue over my teeth...just checking, yanno!  And the other one involves me chewing gum.....it continually gets stuck on my teeth, and I have to reach in and pull it off my teeth.....and I can feel the sensations of putting my fingers in my mouth and the tugging to remove the gum.

Also, whenever I've been training for a new dispatching position, I've often woke myself up dispatching cops and typing on a keyboard.  I can actually hear the radio and see the computer equipment in front of me.

Usually, the only time I have exotic or erotic dreams is when I've taken benedryl or something else to help me sleep.  Again, I feel all the sensations from the dream...I once dreamt I was getting beaten, and I swear I felt every little swat!  I even woke up with that sense of euphoria I have after getting beaten.  Is that skeery or what?

Last but not least, and I'm not sure what kind of dream category this falls under, but I actually "dream" that I'm sleeping.  I know I'm not toally asleep, it's usually when my insomnia is so bad I toss and turn all night, and I "wake" up, not really sure if I'd been asleep in the first place.

I have had night terrors all my life. My dreams, whether pleasant or not, are always vivid. I keep a pen and notebook by the bed and as I wake at night jot them down. My sleep is sporadic, and once awake have trouble going back, so writing gives me something to do.

The feeling evoked in some of them stay with me through the day and can be a real mood challenge sometimes. I've heard that with recurring dreams you can imagine the outcome different and change it, but have never had any luck doing it.

I have insane dreams that make no sense at all when I try to piece them together the next day.  Most of the time they are silly, or, if stressed at work, I will dream something like I am pushing a cart full of bread over a pothole filled dirt road, while the kids are starving at the school-lol.

One of my least favorite and favorite dreams involves loved ones I have lost.  At first, I always have dreams about them where I am sad and hurting.  After a period of time, usually a couple of years or so, I will dream that I see them at the house I was raised in.  They are all happy and such, and I am saying you can't be happy, you died.  They always reply, "Yeah, but I got better".

After I fuss about that being a dirty trick to pull, we sit back and talk, and all is well.  I believe it is the beginning of healing, and I believe that it is them, letting me know it is ok.

It started when my dad died, in 85, and, as others pass away, the crowd in the house I was raised in gets bigger.

It is disturbing, then comforting.  Kinda like life.

i've had ones like these kind. haha
ones where a character i dreamed up lead us on an epic battle to fight a war in pakistan (this was pre-9/11 so no, not a comment on current events =p), another where a robot that fired nose rockets was trying to hide in my backyard, some other really convoluted epic craziness ^.^ i love those.

Oh I know about the teeth dream, 'cause I've had it myself, although it's been a considerable amount of time since I've experienced it. As I've mentioned, I rarely have nightmares anymore. Anything that might come close has to do with something at work and how my boss is a bitch about it. Then I wake up and surprise! My boss is still a bitch! *LOL*

I don't think the euphoria you wake up with is scary. I've experienced similar with my dreams. :)

The last one? Yup. I've had those too. And that reminds me of the pee dreams, just before waking up, where I dream I'm on the toilet. Then I wake up and think "fuck....I gotta get out of bed and go to the bathroom". Obviously a full bladder inspires that one. ;)

Wow, I feel for ya. I've never experienced night terrors, but from what I've heard described about them, they sound horrendous.

The latter part is lucid dreaming. There are books out there that provide exercises on how to perform it. I have one that I started reading, but need to get back to. Perhaps you should look into training your mind to do lucid dreaming. I know that in the book I have, controlling night terrors is one of the examples the author cites as using lucid dreaming productively.

There are drugs that will do that. I am not going to name it, but one drug I was on for a while gave me the wildest, most vivid dreams I'd had. They were truly messed up. And I enjoyed them immensely. :D Then I read about the potential negative side effects of this drug, when I was looking into the connect between my dreams and the drug. I stopped using it. I miss the dreams, but even the slightest bit of risk wasn't worth it to me, particularly as the drug was not effective. That reminds me of a whole other thing - pharmacogenetics - a field of study as to the genetics of how drugs are metabolized in our bodies. I am fairly certain I'm an ubermetabolizer for one class of drugs. They have zero effect on me.

Not a single one of those dreams has been scary, just really odd and vivid. In on of them, my first bf was a DJ at one of our radio stations and was training me. It involved a telephone receiver and punching in codes from 3 columns of codes then a booming "DJ" voice came out on the radio.

This. I'm still remembering and dealing with a long dream I had earlier today.
All of my dreams are as movies or novels, full colour and definite characters.

Except for the evil ones. They don't happen that often, but when they do, they'll happen over and over every evening for several nights at a time. I still don't consider them dreams...more...waking nightmares. I won't describe them here, except to say they are "real", and I am "awake", and there's only one way I've found to make them stop. (I've also tried to force myself to stay awake so they won't happen, but...that only works for so long.)

I rarely remember my dreams.
<snipped>

I never ever remembered mine until I was tested for apnea and now have a CPAP machine.  That is, apnea kept me FROM dreaming, so how could I remember them?

littlewonder: Do you snore?  If so, try apnea testing.  I'm pretty sure it saved my life.  People do die from exhaustion and / or sleep deprivation.  I was mighty close to that condition.  First night of a good night's sleep felt like I had died and gone to heaven.  Seriously.  Get tested.

Now I have vivid dreams and woke up the other night to try to figure out whether or not that was a dream.  Then I woke up and remembered the dream and I remembered the wrap-around dream of waking up the first time.

Years ago, I had helped a building supplies wholesaler with implementing his books on a TRS-80.... goes to show you just HOW many years ago.  As I helped him, I figured out why they weren't balancing.... he was skimming the taxes .  He's long since dead and the building we were in has long since been torn down.  So, it was very strange to see that another business he was running - totally un-known to me - was a chop shop.  Well, I visited him - driving my current vehicle - and when I went to leave, I saw that my truck was stolen.  I went back in to call the police.  Joe, called his "boys" in from the chop shop and they took me out to a hidden building where I found my truck flattened.  I remember thinking "Why did they flatten my truck if this is a chop shop?"

I told Joe I wanted 3 grand, and then there was some sort of distraction, and Joe ended up giving me $6,000.

I always wanted to report him to the tax authorities, but never did.  He had the "skimming" so well hidden, it would require sub-peoneas on three different companies.  His pay-off was always in cash, and he was connected to the Denver Mafia - as I sure the builder was.

Weird, weird, weird.  Still thinking whether the extra $3,000 a pay-off?  Of course it was.  Was my silence when I discovered the skimming worth my life?  Probably.  I did show him how he'd been doing it for....30 or 40 years or so.  Of course, all the invoices involved in the skimming immediately disappeared from his office.  Have I been trying to "figure out" this dream for the past few days?  DUH!

--FR--

I found out years ago that if I eat ice cream just before going to bed I end up having fairly vivid nightmares.

If my feet get cold at night my dreams have scenes involving snow.

If I get too warm at night I have dreams where I get very angry.

The most vivid dream I ever had was when I was in my early 20's.  I dreamed I had killed someone (no one specific), taken their body to a secluded area that I had only been to a couple of times, and rolled the body over the edge of an embankment at the side of a dirt road.  For many, MANY years I felt like I could easily drive to that exact spot in real life, look over the edge, and see the skeleton.

When I was about 9 or 10 I took a nap on the sofa one day and had a rather strange dream.  The sofa sat in front of a large window with long drapes.  In the dream three women wearing harem outfits came out from behind the curtains.  One of them cut my throat.  It hurt, but in my dream I knew that as long as I didn't swallow I would be okay, but eventually I did have to swallow to try to ease the sore throat I had.  When I swallowed I both "died" and woke up at the same moment.  Years later I married a woman that had taken belly dance lessons (harem outfits?) and had serious relationships with two other women who had been belly dancers (one professionally).  The odd thing was that in all three relationships (and remember that there were three ladies that came from behind the curtains) I knew nothing about any of their belly dance interests until well into the relationships.  An omen of the future, or just a weird coincidence?  Who knows.

The only experience with night terrors I've ever had involved my son.  He started them at 6 months old, and they finally stopped at about the age of 3.  I cannot imagine what terrified him in his sleep like that, especially since this child had no concept of fear.  I wouldn't wish them on anyone, not even my worst enemy.

Every 90 minutes, he'd wake up screaming, almost out of the range of human hearing, and I'd pick him up, and every joint in his little body was locked.  The first time it happened, I thought he was having a seizure.  I'd wake him up, he'd go back to sleep, and 90 minutes later, we'd be doing it all over again.  He'd wake up in the am just dandy and ready to go, me, I was totally sleep deprived, not getting any REM sleep.....I took my son in for his shots, and the doctor wanted to put ME in the hospital.  The only solution I could find for my son was to have him put on Valium......yeah, riiiiiight!

With my insomnia, it is rare that I sleep more than 4 hours in a given period.  Last week, I got up on Moday at 1:45 pm to go to work, and didn't fall asleep until Wedneday at 2:30 am after taking benedryl and wine.  I guess the good news is that when I do sleep, I'm still dreaming, so at least there's that.  I read Stephen King's book Insomnia, and I could SO relate to the story, and the thoughts of the characters...it's like the man was in my freaking head!

I became "addicted" to my dreams a couple years ago. It got to the point where I was trying to completely avoid reality. I had a better life in the dreamworld.

All of my dreams are in Technicolor, very few are erotic at all, and most feature someone I know, who has been a good friend or major influece upon me. There are some recurring motifs; strange subway systems which carry me through mescaline-vision urban settings (dense buildings, stores, museums with fascinatingly bizarre artwork... M.C. Escher-type houses with the most intricate woodwork, including wood mosiac floors, elaborate bathrooms (there have been a couple weird waterspotrs scenes in these), wooden statues and small gargolyles which punctuate crown moldings,...

The few erotic segments I have are invariably hetero... and almost always have a strong emotional component, such as meeting a woman and falling in love... holding hands... kissing and hugging... very romantic. I'd put up a pic of the type of woman who accompanies me in my dreams if I could remember how.
