Thanks! I was too skeered to look! [although I felt hopeful after checking the MB results]

I would not crow to loud. Ontario is the original Liberal bastion, and if they could not hold the fort in their homeland, things are not good.

And then there was the low turnout to boot -

quote:

Voter turnout in Thursday’s Ontario election was so low it set a new record with only 49.2 per cent of eligible voters going to the polls, which Democracy Watch calls a crisis requiring changes to the system.

The previous low record was 52.8 per cent, set in 2007.

“Initial results show that the Ontario Liberals have won 53 of 107 seats with the support of only 18.4 per cent of eligible voters,” said Tyler Sommers, co-ordinator for Democracy Watch.

“With just under half of eligible voters casting ballots yesterday, the lowest in Ontario’s history, alarm bells should be going off and questions raised about the legitimacy of the provincial government,” Sommers said.

Ontario election turnout hits record low

And as the matter stands - "My friends, it is very clear the people of Ontario have put Dalton McGuinty on a very short leash."

on what fucking planet? of the last 20 governments, only 4 have been liberal. fuck, go all the way back, since confederation ontario has had something like 22 conservative or allied governments and 15 liberal or allied governments <and one each for the united farmers and the ndp>.

the liberal dominance since 2003 is an anomaly not seen since 1905, so i'd hardly call it a fucking liberal bastion. if you want to comment on canadian affairs, learn a little about it there, buckwheat.

Really? So you have some other province in mind that carries the Liberal load in the Dominion? With 40 % of the Canadian population, who else but Ontario has been pulling the Gritwagon around?

Canada would likely not see another Liberal federal government this century if a big meteor destroyed southern Ontario.

And half of you apparently don't even vote these days. As noted, 18% of the province eleigible to vote elected the Liberals. That is a clear mandate alrighty, scarey to think this Ontario tail generally wags the federal dog.

Which is a pity; I loved the NDP back in the days of Ed Broadbent.

A shame you don't practice what you preach.

So you discovered you cannot name another province that has anything but a percentage the Gritpower as Ontario?

About what I thought.

That is why you fired off your half-baked reply doubtless.

You still have been unable to name this Canadian province that you imagine is a more powerful Liberal center of power then Ontario,  haven't you?

That's because there isn't one. ;)

Population-wise, no other province can touch Ontario. Québec is a far-away second. And while Jean Charest may be a Liberal now, that's only until his next party change, which seems to be a theme for some of Canada's politicians. Exactly how long was he PC faithful? As for BC, the 3rd in line, it's apathy that won the Liberals the power in that province. Gordon Campbell is a royal screw-up and one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever witnessed. Anyone who smiles for his mug shot when being arrested for drunk driving is an ass. He made the news here when he did that.

Jean Charest is Liberal in party only. He is a Conservative in Liberal clothing. The bastard can ram a huge tree up his ass and take a flying leap and God I wish he would.

Quebec has its own local politics, (if there was a non-Tory center right party, it likely would take Quebec) and BC Liberals are gonna take a beating in 2013, with the NDP and the Tory divvying up at least 15 percent of their the Liberal base, if the latest polls mean anything.

This Ontario election with its low turnout and very closely won  "victory"  was a serious Liberal wakeup call (why didn't half the voters vote and which party or issues could or would bring them out in the next election are interesting questions)  and a nicely blooded nose, too. If they cannot maintain the government they form, things will be getting really interesting for them  (and Ontario) in the next election.

I see there are already wagers being laid on just how long that period will be, with everything the Grits do in this minefield subject to both NDP and Tory scrutiny and approval. And with less then one in five Ontario voters putting them in the government, they don't have much room to make any mistakes.

Given that Ignatieff is leader of the Liberal Party that isn't surprising is it. I hope it is a wakeup call though I'm not sure what they can do about it unless he's fired and a decent replacement found.

Yeah I know but there are some who are close to it. IMO Ignatieff is about as far from a decent human being and still call them human. I think the Liberals haven't had a decent leader since Trudeau.

If this is happening n Ontario, the rest of the Dominion's Liberal fortunes aren't t far off the course set there. Manitoba held the fort, but the Liberal fortunes are definately in decline elsewhere.

As for the Quebecois, many of the French ones are actually pretty conservative (in the USAsian sense, not as in the Tory sense.)  once you get out of the bigger Quebec cities, so it is not surprising politicians like Jean Charest switch around.

As for Ignoramus, er Ignatief, he has done a workmanlike job of snatching Defeat from the jaws of Victory enough times so even he is likely well aware of this dubious skill of his.

The left in the Dominion is going to be missing Jack Layton. Say what you want of his politics, at least he knew what he was trying to do, and quite often got it done properly.
