I am thinking of auditioning for a play at my local community theatre. I haven't been in a play since high school. Anyone act in community theatre productions? I have some questions about how to audition

It's been years for me, but I used to be very involved in theatre.

They want an audition bases on a cold reading. I am assuming that means they will tell me what to read? AlsO, they ask for a head shot. What do they usually expect for that?

Yes, a cold reading is one in which you're given the script and then told to act it out.

A head shot is a picture of you (generally a fairly close up face shot) in the size specified. Oftentimes you will attach (with a paper clip) a card with your statistics on it; age, height, weight, hair colour, eye colour, age-range you're able to play. The best thing to do is to call ahead and ask them exactly what they're looking for and what info you should include.

ETA: after researching a bit, industry standard is 8 by 10.

I suggest you familiarize yourself with the play prior to the audition. Yes, if they require a cold reading they will tell you what to read, but if you familiarize yourself with the play ahead of time you can get a feel for the various characters and the situations involved.

For a headshot, just get a friend to use a digital camera to take a picture of you from waist up in normal street clothes and print it out on photo paper. If you have one, attach a resume to the back

A headshot is just that. A picture from the neck up.

I haven't done community theater in years. The ones I were involved in all involved cold readings, but never a head shot. And of course a song if it were a musical.

Don't know if he was asking you in a Fast Reply, or me who it was addressed to.

Either way, he got the right answer!

I couldn't figure that out either, so I just answered for both of us, I guess.
