Corvallis Oregon -

It's a university town, so there are a lot of more high brow things.  They have the DaVinci Days every summer in which they celebrate both Leonardo's artistic abilities and his scientific achievements.  The entire city gets involved (there are art contests with the 5th grade class competing against the real estate office against the Smith family - EVERYBODY does a project.  It's pretty cool).  It is one of the few places in the country that can feed its area - it's known as a place to learn about growing techniques for plants, so the farms and such are really well cared for.  The farmer's market is wonderful and has a small town feel.

It's really close to a big city so that's not problem.

There is a diverse, international feel to it as well because so many people from around the world study there - particularly agriculture - at the university.  Because of all the internationals, you have the things that go with that - the international markets, restaurants, movies, celebrations, etc.

The weather is lovely.  It's earthy crunchy in some ways but very settled as well.

Hey!  Maybe I ought to move there!

Let us know what you decide!

Anywhere BUT Manitoba. Don't move here. Don't visit here. Don't even look out the window when you fly over.
Manitoba stinks.

I'm thinking of moving to a new place. But not just a new local place, I'm thinking of really moving somewhere new.

Sooooo.....my question is what places (within the US) do people think would be a great place to live? I'm not a city person, but I also don't want to travel half an hour just for bread and milk because the nearest store is too far away.

Tell me about the place and why you think it is a great place for someone to live.

I think you need to give some more concrete desires and preferences for anyone to be able to give you good advice.

If "any place" is your criteria, any place is as good as any other.

When we hang up the keys to the motor home we'll settle down in Yuma AZ.  It's a nice sized town and not too big.  It's also not too small.  It has a decent hospital, Walmart, Walgreens, and most of the regular restaurant chains.

It's also a cheap place for those over 55 to live.  You can buy a small park model (1 bedroom mobile home or 5th wheel) for as little as $4,000 on up to 30,000 with most in the $20,000 area.  Many have an Arizona room which is a finished enclosed porch with extends your living area.  Your rent would be as little as $1800 for the year (and up depending on the park) which includes water, sewage, swimming pools, hot tubs, billiards room, laundry, card room, etc.  We pay $2200 a year even though we don't live there full time as it's cheaper to do that than pay for 6 or 7 months.

The park has pot luck dinners.  There are dances twice a month.  There are clubs for most any interest such as poker, or golf, jazz, or singing.  You can join these clubs or not.  Happy hour is a busy time of the day.

Now, we couldn't live in Yuma if we didn't have a lot of family and friends in the north to visit each summer.  It gets HOT in Yuma.  Those who were born there don't seem to mind the heat.  I'm okay up to the mid 90s, but 110 is July is more than I want to face.  I'd have to get out of there in July and Aug.

Oakhurst, CA. Mountain town. Down to Earth people (okay, hicks). Beautiful. A short drive from Bass Lake, Yosemite, and a number of other national parks. Wildlife and clean mountain air.

The downside is it's a small town, it's touristy in the summer and dead in the winter, the mountain roads are dangerous, the occasional snow is inconvenient, and the constant presence of country music is irritating.

Gotta throw in an honorable mention for Davis (a hippie college town), and supposedly the U.S. city with the most bikes per capita.

Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions. FirmhandKY makes a valid point that some more criteria might be helpful.

First, I HATE hot weather! Peppermint's place sounded so great until she said it got to 110 degrees.

hlen5, your suggestion was GREAT. Never heard of that site. Definately going to check it out.

So here are the extra details. I want to stay in the US. So for those of you who suggested places in Canada and Europe, thanks, but no thanks.

I would rather have cold weather than hot weather. Even though I love to swim, I hate the heat and humidity more.

I'm not worried about an active kink scene as I don't participate in them.

My "dream" town is small, where everyone pretty much knows each other and is friendly (hey! I said it was a dream). The area should farm good produce (I swear the two reasons to live in NJ are the corn and tomatoes).

The cost of living should be low. New Jesery is one of the most expensive places in the country to live, but being born here, I just never left. I think the time to find out what else is out there has come.

I intend to rent, so I want somewhere that has affordable rentals. I don't want to live in either hurricane alley (lived there once already) or tornado alley. I would like to live somewhere with decent public transportation.

Currently, I'm less than 30 minutes from New York City, although to look around you would not know it. I prefer the country to the city.

Now I'm going to look at the web sit hlen5 suggested and see where it suggests I go.

I'm in the beginning stages of this whole thing, so I won't be going anywhere for a while, but I'm excited to start looking.

hhmm...it sounds like you might enjoy Western PA where I grew up, possibly Johnstown, PA or Altoona, PA. Both are considered cities but they're actually large towns. They're both along the Allegheny Mountain range so they see a lot of snow and in the summer the humidity is rather low. Everyone knows each other. You can't do anything without someone knowing about it and it getting back to you. Agriculture and farming is a huge business in the area since it seems everyone either farms, works in the mines or works for the federal prison in the area. Most of the farms have been passed down from generation to generation. It's definitely an affordable place for renting. If you live in Altoona or Johnstown then public transportation is rather good but if you live in any of the surrounding little villages and towns you're pretty much screwed since like I said it's mostly farmland and everything is quite a distance away. Living in the "cities" though isn't bad. Crime is low. There is a munch group in Altoona but otherwise the scene is nonexistent. Pittsburgh is about an hour from Johnstown though where there is always a lot going on and Altoona is about a half hour from State College where Penn State University is located...basically a college party town.

It's really not a bad area to live. Most everyone I know who has ever lived there and moved away ends up moving back to retire there.

Funny, I went to hlen5's suggested site and Johnston, PA was on the list!

Right now, as I said, I'm in the beginning stages, and there is quite a bit I have to clear up where I am before I can go. But I would love to live in one of those small towns where I can know my neighbors.

I'm glad it worked for you!!

subrob1967 -> RE: Thinking of Moving (8/18/2011 11:46:25 PM)

Eastern or Central Tennessee...Mountains, mild weather, no state income taxes, very affordable.

Personally I'd love to move to one of three places, but I can't seem to talk either Holly or Karen into it.
1) Logan Utah... Small town, drop dead gorgeous, National Forests, and Skiing.
2) Blackhawk Colorado... Old mining town, last time I was there they were building a very nice casino.
3) Kalispell Montana... Surrounded by National Parks, small population, but it get's pretty fecking cold during the winter.

Hilo.

mummyman321 -> RE: Thinking of Moving (8/19/2011 10:20:31 AM)

I have been to Ashville many times. It is a very nice place. You can get across town in less than 30 minutes in full rush hour. You are near many things. The Blue Ridge Parkway for scenic rides in the mountains. Close to Smokey Mountains. Many resturants for very good eating. A nice home town atmosphere. Many summer music festivals. Clean air. I could easily move there.
