you guys have me wanting to visit asheville.
and denver; one day i'll get over there.
i'll throw omaha into the ring -- omaha is really a nice town. okay, it's got problems like everywhere -- some neighborhoods really suck and have high localized crime rates, and there are a lot of reeeeally snooty people on the west side of town who dont' think the law applies to them. =p but in the middle of town you find a really nice mix of all sorts of people.
i'm from a small town, and i like omaha because it seems like a small town, even though it's large and has lots to offer -- there are LOADS of trees, tons of parks, trails, a fantastic zoo, movie theatres everywhere, several great malls (and one that's slowly dying haha), lots of unique little local shops, particularly down in the Old Market, as well as the familiar chains. there is a great professional dance company, several professional theatre groups, a variety of art galleries ranging from small and independent to nationally renowned, like the Joslyn. (the art scene is really active here; it's pretty cool.) the Century Link Center (formerly Qwest Center) brings in all sorts of great national acts, and if you like baseball, the College World Series is here every year. Also, right across the river there are all sorts of casinos if you're a gambling fan, and the casinos also bring in lots of great entertainment.
driving can be really annoying here because people are hilariously competitive -- they get very predictable. public transportation exists but could be better. still, it's not terrible once you figure out how it all works. this area also features the typical midwestern weather extremes -- HOT summer, COLD winter, fantabulous thunderstorms sprinkled throughout, with a generally pleasant spring and fall. we also have something called "thundersnows" which i'd never experienced before living here. haha
thunder, lightning, and snow! wowzers! another thing i'd never experienced before, though, are sundogs -- they are beautiful, and are one of the things i really appreciate in the bleakness of winter. =p
NE's kink scene is small but growing; the groups exist mostly out of Omaha and Lincoln, here on the east side of the state, and there are some scattered Western NE kinky people, but they mostly migrate to this side for events and socializing. the events are mostly play parties and demos, though; not a lot of seminars and other things like that, but we've been trying to get some new things like that happening around here. One group had an event with national presenters over the weekend; i went to the event last year, and it was pretty fun. people from KC and cities in Iowa come in for that event.
