True.  I'm waiting on some result of some of the research in that area as well.  I think we are on the horizon of some pretty interesting results.

They've only treated 3 patients with it, Firm. It's a bit soon to get excited.

That was my motto too ;-) I turned 45 on Monday though...so now it's still live fast (cause I do) die when I die and leave a corpse as good looking as I can. I'm trying my best. .

i don't think i'd want to live forever. i think it would all just get very tiring. imagine, after so many years, what it would take to get you excited about anything? when you've already been there and done that for 200 years with no end in sight? =p

Yeah. I ran with that motto as a kid. Buried a lot of good friends young, and most left smoking corpses and closed casket funerals and never ever knew what they were missing by dying so early. Heck, even Neil Young sneers at his inanity of his "Better to burn out than fade away" line.
Life is sweet. Life is precious. Live it to the fullest, laugh, love, taste something sweet, kiss the wind.
Me" I'd like to live forever, but only if I had my health. I wouldn't wanna be some 100 year old cripple, trapped in the dying husk of a body, slowly going insane. Course, maybe this mentality is based on watching loved ones die from Alzheimers, just about the cruelest thing I've ever seen.
Now if I could go all Lestat...:-)

Live FOREVER? In the same body? Or at all? No thanks. Once my parents are gone, and I have no family responsibilities, it's a crapshoot whether I will hang around any longer myself.

And yes, there are FAR too many of us, whatever happened to zero population growth?

That song has been playing through my mind since I saw the title thread!

However, this is what I've been thinking about, regarding the question of what IF we couldn't die?

Anyone ever hear of the "pixie dust" that helped a man regrow his finger?

He was given the "dust" by Dr Stephen Badylak from the University of Pittsburgh, and he applied it as instructed, and his cut off finger grew completely back.

Dr Badylak didn't seek publicity, and made no claims.  Some media outlets said it was a fake.

But not anymore.  He's done it a few more times, and according to an article I read a couple of months ago, is much further along, and can regrow any body part in a human being.

He has defense contracts right now.

Firm

edited to add: Hell, maybe it was Alan R. Spievack.  I've got to find the article again.

Hell, it was both of them:

A Doctor, a Pig, and a Magical Pixie Dust That Could Regrow Fingers

There's a fortune in it if it will make existing parts larger. Just sayin.

And if the rate of medical advances continue, it may be possible.

Just one astounding recent discovery:

Possible progress in medicine
Tyler Cowen on August 10, 2011

…in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

…In a paper published July 27 in the journal PLoS One, the researchers tested their drug against 15 viruses, and found it was effective against all of them — including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhagic fever.

The drug works by targeting a type of RNA produced only in cells that have been infected by viruses. “In theory, it should work against all viruses,” says Todd Rider…

A Press Release on the subject:
New drug could cure nearly any viral infection Researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Lab have developed technology that may someday cure the common cold, influenza and other ailments.
Anne Trafton, MIT News Office

Most bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin, discovered decades ago. However, such drugs are useless against viral infections, including influenza, the common cold, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

Now, in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

I just hope I live long enough to live forever.
