And if the rate of medical advances continue, it may be possible.

Just one astounding recent discovery:

Possible progress in medicine
Tyler Cowen on August 10, 2011

    …in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

   …In a paper published July 27 in the journal PLoS One, the researchers tested their drug against 15 viruses, and found it was effective against all of them — including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhagic fever.

   The drug works by targeting a type of RNA produced only in cells that have been infected by viruses. “In theory, it should work against all viruses,” says Todd Rider…

A Press Release on the subject:
New drug could cure nearly any viral infection Researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Lab have developed technology that may someday cure the common cold, influenza and other ailments.
Anne Trafton, MIT News Office

Most bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin, discovered decades ago. However, such drugs are useless against viral infections, including influenza, the common cold, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

Now, in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

I just hope I live long enough to live forever. [:)]

don't you think there a few to many of us already?

LillyBoPeep -> RE: I want to live forever ... (8/11/2011 3:14:03 PM)

well that's interesting. ^_^
it's kinda mind-boggling to see the way medicine and science are progressing. the "cure for the common cold" joke just might become obsolete fairly soon.

Yeah like people living forever while we keep making more is a good thing. It's great that there is a cure for those diseases but I don't see the appeal of living forever.

but isnt that basically what the health care system does now, try to keep you alive as long as possible?.. i mean, they say that 100+ years old is the fastest growing demographic...

I do half-joke that i fully expect to live to be 150 years old... but i would want to be in the best healthiest shape i could be no matter how old i got...

seriously tho, imo, not everyone will be able to afford the latest and greatest to keep themselves alive forever and certainly the govt isnt going to be able to pay for it..

and you know, a few years ago i read about a study that said rich people live something like 10 years longer than poor people..

so... is 100 is the new 50??? [&:]

I want to live as long as I am enjoying life. 100? nah, not if means 20 years of care homes and double incontinence

Try yeah, succeed no. Of course it is, think of all the Babyboomers who are now old.

Epytropos -> RE: I want to live forever ... (8/11/2011 3:43:39 PM)

If we can cure the geriatric illnesses that end up degenerating the body to the point where life is no longer pleasant, I'd kill to live forever. If not, I'll stick with my plan of death by tiger at 55.

Well, yanno, curing diseases and stopping the aging process are not quite the same thing...

You could end up looking a walking raisin.

lol but old doesnt mean decrepit. Many boomers are in great shape, those that take care of themselves, eat right, exercise, have low stress and enjoy life.

so here we have an old gal, she was born in 1931.. which makes her 80 years old, she looks great, maybe a little tarty/hollywood by some standards but great nonetheless. She rides a motorcycle, she has a hot younger boyfriend/hubby and she is having a riot...

seriously, she lives a more fullfilling life than many half her age..

Then they could be the KY Raisins.

This is not highlander.  I have zero interest in living that long.

You got that right!!  Let's not forget that there it still basic cellular degeneration. It's a known fact that your cells can only replicate so many times before they lose viability. What about bone and joint degeneration? Alzheimers? Dementia? etc......got any more bubbles you want popped?

Live fast, die young, leave a nice corpse.

Kana -> RE: I want to live forever ... (8/11/2011 5:19:18 PM)

The only reason I would want to live forever is if those I love can also live forever. Otherwise I think I'll pass. I have no desire to live while having to live through another partner and my child and her children and her partner pass on. One was more than enough for me thanks.

edit: ack...sorry, didn't know Master was sstill logged on my computer lol

That was my motto too ;-) I turned 45 on Monday though...so now it's still live fast (cause I do) die when I die and leave a corpse as good looking as I can. I'm trying my best. [;)].

I never said decrepit, I was just pointing out why there are so many elderly people right now

oh, ok.. [:D] ..but the boomers arent the ones that are hitting 100 right now. I think the boomers are just now starting to retire in the US and from what i have read before, Canada is about 10 years behind? .. something like that,..

You're still a kid, kid. I'll be 58 in a few days and I'm only now understanding that I don't know half as much as I knew when I was half my age.

Leukemia cure?

New leukemia treatment exceeds 'wildest expectations'
8/10/2011 7:20:14 PM ET

In the research published Wednesday, doctors at the University of Pennsylvania say the treatment made the most common type of leukemia completely disappear in two of the patients and reduced it by 70 percent in the third. In each of the patients as much as five pounds of cancerous tissue completely melted away in a few weeks, and a year later it is still gone.

The results of the preliminary test “exceeded our wildest expectations,” says immunologist Dr. Carl June a member of the Abramson Cancer Center's research team.
