Seems like making to a ripe old age is mostly a matter of genetics

I believe it. My father is in his mid 80s, getting fatter year by year. You can't get him to walk around the block. Yet he has no signs of heart disease.

My great grandfather ate steak, eggs, and apple pie every morning for breakfast. Followed by a shot of whiskey and a long days work. He smoke cigars too. He lived to be 105 years old. So this really doesn't shock me much.

My great-great grandmother lived to 103. Great-grand mother 90, grandmother is currently 93.

All of them tobacco users, pork eaters, gravy eaters, eggs, ham, gravy, biscuits for breakfast women. The men don't fare quite as well, one died in his mid 80's, one in his mid 70's, and one at 64.

They all did all the bad things that's supposed to end life early. I suppose the 64 year old, that was true. He ate all the bad stuff, smoked 2 cartons a week, drank.

Shrug

Awww, sorry to hear, Lucy :(

Life....and death....is weird sometimes. My grandmother lived to 90, and then her son, my father, died later that year at age 67, both of natural causes. I just live life, because you just don't know, really.

Exactly... I remember him and hubby talking about which one of them would go first.. my huby was an achoholic and a smoker and nobody expected him to live to fifty, never mind 65, and my nephew was expected to go at 70. Most of the men on his side go early too. Lifes a bitch... but oh we have some great memories

Just to lighten the mood slightly. I am going to a funeral friday. A friend said to me today "Enjoy your funeral" I asked her if I look that ill.

Depends on how and where you are living.
They used to live in villages, or small towns.
Waking up by dawn, walking to the farm or field to check it out, eating the food they made, eating the bread they made, drinking the milk they made, eating the chicken they raised which was being fed directly from the nature(that is why they were hundred times tastier than the artificial chickens), eating the lamb or beef they raised, working, no laziness, natural practice by working, etc...
This may not apply to all, but at least applies to some.
I remember my father's grandmother was 100 years old when I was a child and could split an onion with her hand very easily, could cook and clean, and bake breads...
Even though they may be eating animal based products, they were getting it out of their bodies by the hard work they had to do to continue their lives...

Sorry to hear that Lucy. Condolences.

My mom died at the relatively young age of 67. Her mother lived to the age of 86; father to the age of 93. My grandmother was overweight but never smoked and drank very rarely, grandpa was a heavy smoker, had emphysema in his later years, enjoyed his alcohol. Mom, too was a heavy smoker, battled diabetes for more than 2 decades and succumbed to pancreatic cancer. In contrast, grandpa's mother lived to be 107.

You just never know what will come down the bend.

Massive brain bleed and jthe hardest decision of O/our marriage... To pull life support... 9 days after the second funeral 2 class A's showed up... One with a cross patch..... My 4th oldest brother died in combat and would be home soon. Ironically the chaplain is the same one who has made that visit 2 other times....

Grins....My Granny grew and rolled her own.....are as above...true Southern farmers diet.......so did her Mom, and so forth...so do all my aunts and uncles, 23 from that granny.....

She died at 102.....the youngest age in my family to date. Most see an active 106. I mean they work, farm, clean, cook, can up until they drop.

So I tell folks....hell...by my families standards I've not even reached middle age......

The women in my family all died of old age (over 90) the men all died a lot younger (under 70)
There could be some genetics involved to I suppose......

Condoleances for those who are hurt with a loss.
