So Iranian media is claiming that their Revolutionary Guard shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that was trying to gather information on an underground uranium enrichment site near Qom (source).

My take: if the US is going to spy (and it will), can it try to be a tad more discreet? Being caught out invading other nations' sovereignty (airspace) when one is not in a state of war with them simply reinforces the image abroad of bullying American exceptionalism.

I guess they finally found something they can shoot down.

So what, even the Somalians have apparently shot a couple down, adn a couple have been downed in Yemen, if some reports are true.

It is not like the US isn't spying world wide. They can't do much except aim lasers pointers at the spy satalites yet.

You all are kidding here right ? We see only the beginning.

In the future those drones will be all over the place, yes right in your community and will in time be able to deactivate that chip in your brain, or back or leg...or...?

Trust me kinkroids Nazi America is coming.

From the article:

Earlier this month, Iranian military officials showed Russian experts several U.S. drones they said were shot down in recent years.

Iran is sharing any technical know how they can glean from the wrecks with Russia. They have had a pretty cosy relationship since the fall of the USSR.

That's odd. I thought we used satellites for spying, not drones.

Quite true. Russia also sold Iran a bunch of Sunburn SS-N-22 anti-ship missiles (quite relevant if you think of the Strait of Hormuz and what closing it say, by sinking a ship would do to the US and world economy). Remember also that Iran has observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (think a Russia-China NATO).

They float blimps over large gatherings,soccer games and the like in the UK.

With multiple cameras,high speed and video.Some are unmanned.

The crafts linger over the crowds with little notice.

They are affective in trying to combat the "hooligans" and others who look to make trouble.

Drones can work pretty much the same way.

Both, Steven. Drones offer certain advantages, e.g. you're not dependent on when the orbit of a satellite brings it over the region you want to examine. In addition, you can change/upgrade the sensor packages on a drone much more cheaply than launching a new satellite.

A question, do these drones have American insignia on them, you know something like the US star and bars as is common on manned aircraft ?

Oops, google provided the answer ;

(Quite possibly a generic picture, yet it was the image attached to yet another report of the aircraft downed in Iran ;

http://geonewsupdate.com/iran-shot-down-unmanned-us-spy-plane-lawmaker/us-drone-3 )

How stupid, and how provocative, surely reason would suggest that if one wants to spy on someone, one does not let that other know who it is that is spying on them ?

Why create added tension by providing proof of ones nefarious activities, proof if in the wrong hands could cause problems where otherwise there would not be.

Or is it really all about provocation under the guise of intelligence gathering ?

Oh come on now, we all know whatever conventions that have been signed mean diddly squat when intelligence gathering is the name of the game, there is no fair play and rules in that game, else why did Abu Ghraib and Guantamano Bay happen, for surely torture and detention without trial is also against countless civilised world rules and regulations.

"Russia also sold Iran a bunch of Sunburn SS-N-22 anti-ship missiles .."

IIRC those were the source of much consternation. They were the fastest thing going back then I think. If they had more range it would have been a BIG problem.

The US had better get rid of this delusion of superiority, there are other rocket scientists in the world, and other countries have money as well. Overconfidence can be deadly.

It's time to stop this shit.

The whole point of the drone is to be discreet but, as the old saying goes, shit happens. Nations spy on each other and do so to the best of their ability. Drones are just an advantage that the U.S. has that most other nations do not, I don't see why our spying on other nations (some of which need to be watched!) makes us any different from other nations spying on each other.

Exactly, certain countries and their arrogance could very well be their undoing, the world moves on, and whilst the world moves on, new ideas come into being, ideas that the old regimes have difficulty with, but because old regimes have difficulty, that is not to say the new ideas are necessarily wrong.

But with many Americans saying they don't want the rest of the world to think of their military as the world police force, hey, the US machine is sticking it's nose into things that might cause the police force to go into action again, so who is it, the world, or your own country that has created the notion of world police ?

I'm sure the ones used by the CIA and NRO aren't marked like the USAF one you found a pic of but an unmarked high tech drone aircraft is presumptively US by dint of hardly anyone else using them.
