DavidLee44UK -> do you read it old style (7/15/2011 5:20:27 AM)

I'm off into town later so my mum asked me to pick up a paper

she happened to phone me while I was reading the news on Google

I only read papers for the sports section and have done for 6 months or so

do you read the paper or read the news online

i love reading newspapers, but generally only read them when i come across them. occasionally i'll buy a sunday paper for coupons and special sections. otherwise it's just an extra cost that online news would take care of.

yup the cost can quickly mount up but I also find its old news

were as Google news tends to be updated regularly

one reasons why I dont tend to watch the news

apart from if I am up the bbc breakfast news

i do think that news progs and politics shows etc will have to do something

i can see bbc news 24 channel staying but news bulletins on reg channels disappearing

Nope, it's all biased crap meant to sell papers and pull in viewers.

very true -- by the time the paper's printed and for sale, there's more information that the paper won't have until tomorrow, while online news can be updated and released almost instantly.

True, but I find the slight delay gives good newspapers a more thoughtful and analytical approach.

How about using both?  I do.

As do I.

We get the paper at the house, but mainly I read the news on the interwebs. The local paper is good for local stories. I stopped watching the TV news long ago, it was and is only good for weather and sports news anyway!

I actually enjoy reading the newspaper, though I haven't done it regularly in years now. Sunday mornings used to be all about making good coffee and settling into the sofa with the paper sections all around me. I personally like reading the local stuff, the travel & cooking sections, the advice columns, and of course, the funnies, the crossword puzzle and the Jumble. I miss it.

Same here, I like the different approaches they have, from having worked for print and online, it's a completely different style of writing and what works for one doesn't always work for the other. Online it's very quick, short, to the point as distraction is just a click away, in print you are having the paper in your hand, there can be more explanation, more background, more setting the mood, etc.

Difference between a meal for enjoyment and eating because the body needs fuel.

Plus I really don't want to sit down and have breakfast in front of a screen, I want to pick up the paper and read it while drinking coffee. While I think the Kindle is a great thing, especially if I'm on a train or plane and don't want to carry too much with me, when I am at home I still prefer the old fashioned paper book, something where I can turn the pages and all that.

I do my best to avoid all forms of news media. I have found that I'm much happier since I stopped knowing about all the negative shit. Every now & again something crosses my path, but I don't go seeking it out.

Dude. Your avatar is very serial killer-y. Like, the kind of thing I saw on South Park last night!

I like to be informed what goes on in the world, as it often has a direct impact on my work, working for a company that deals internationally, not being informed about current events can be lethal, plus while I am aware that the world is far from perfect, I prefer to know what kind of shit I am dealing with, not knowing seems to me a bit like ostrich policy. It's my choice how much I let it affect me and pretty often something that is really depressing has inspired me to say sod it, no going out this weekend, there's serious shit happening in the world, blowing a few hundred on a nice night or weekend in a big city is great fun, but if I read about kids starving, I feel like shit if I do it, so my excuse or escape is to give that money to a respected charity that deals with the particular problem, feel a lot better about it and I can enjoy the next weekend out, plus while I stay in I usually get stir crazy and pick up a quick freelance job.

Now of course that is a shallow way of pacifying my own guilty feelings, but you know, somebody who's struggling for survival might welcome £300 to £500 - and I don't think they are too concerned about the motivation of the person who gave them food or a roof. Would I be a truly good person, I'd possibly give away anything but the bare minimum I need to live, but I'm not, I'm aware of that, but sod it, at least I am doing a little bit instead of just ignoring it all, it makes me feel better, it possibly helps somebody, win win.

I still do it from time to time, but then I'm a bit old fashioned in certain ways.

I go down to the paper shop, grab the Sunday paper, sometimes 2, and then come back, have some coffee and paper in bed, then get up, make these:

(sometimes with a couple of rashers of smoked bacon on top)

... eat them, often dunking a bit of paper in them as I'm reading (this is particularly important, and adds to the enjoyment), and then have more coffee and/or juice.

It's a nice way to spend a Sunday morning :)
