You know I'm glad that Rodney King's beating was publicized. It's harder to deny police brutality when it's staring at you from your TV or newspaper.

I'm not talking about the publicity surrounding the beating, I'm talking about the current publicity surrounding the DUI. It paints him as not worthy of anyone's defense of him. And it amazes me that some people are treating this DUI as though he'd actually killed someone. I'm not condoning driving while under the influence of anything, but the OP here led me to believe that Mr. King had committed a much more serious crime, such as murder or assault. Perhaps armed robbery.

Oh I know that, Linnie. My comment wasn't meant to be in answer to yours. We (as usual) are on the same page.

And the news media hasn't failed me on this one. My theory is that the news media puts out there whatever they want to get us upset about. If this had been one of the other black men who'd been beaten by the police but not publicized to the extent Mr. King was, we would never have read about it. But because it is about this one particular man, they chose to publicize it & their decision has resulted in just what they'd hoped for: a bunch of upset people arguing about this.

exactly, Linnea -- if it had been anyone else, there wouldn't be an article about it. but this article is presented as if to say "see, this is the guy the riots were over -- he didn't deserve it! look, he's a criminal!"
it's ridiculous =p

It would not have happened if he had pulled over instead of fleeing from the police on a high-speed chase in excess of 100 mph.

considering that it also happens to people who AREN'T fleeing at 100 mph, i don't really think it would have made a difference.

But he was.

Let me ask you something.  What if he had plowed into another car during that chase and killed a young child?  Would you still be viewing him as a victim?

Rare that I agree with anything you say, but this time I do. There was no excuse for the beatings, but he became the poster child for white cops beating, poor, defenseless LAW ABIDING black people everywhere. That is a problem

While he did not deserve to be beaten like that, he was not just some innocent "victim." Can YOU see the difference LPB?

I wonder why this is pointed at LillyBoPeep....

Being an "innocent victim" has nothing to do with the FACT he was beaten like a dog by a very racist police force. Having known people who have been harassed in Southern California for the offense of "driving while Black" or "driving while Hispanic" there are many people who have been brutalized for nothing more than the color of their skin.

Nothing that LillyBoPeep has said on this thread warrants your post in her direction. She has more or less stated that the only reason this is "news" is because of who King is, and his infamy.

Yes, Julia. Since I posted essentially the same thing that Lilly did & she was actually agreeing with me, I'm wondering why the post wasn't directed at me also???

As a society tho- we decided that DUIs are illegal.      Why should he be allowed to drive DUI and kill people?

Hunkie,

He was held on suspicion of driving under the influence.  Drive drunk one should pay the price.

The problem is really one of so what?  People get arrested for DUI every day.  When found guilty they should pay for their misstep.

The question really is why some people need to start on the "POS" path and rehash things that happened years ago.  It has not one thing to do with the current charge.

Termyn8or -> RE: Rodney King arrested yet again. (7/14/2011 3:52:05 PM)

"How not to get your ass kicked by the police "

Believe it or not I was just about to post that. I DLed it years ago and always thought it hilarious, and actually quite authoratative.

Ever see "Feel The Pain" ? I used to have it but I can't find a bunch of stuff - again.

I got my ass kicked for fleeing and eluding once a long time ago. They weren't all that tough, I got beat a hell of alot worse than that. The fact is three criminal types can usually beat four cops, and they don't need guns or handcuffs.

T^T
