With electric fly swatters and many things in life, you get what you pay for... the quality of these fun toys varies vastly with the price and manufacturer. It would not surprise me that some of the very inexpensive devices may vary output and burn or singe skin or hair. The batteries and electrical current are small...(as mentioned) two 1.5 volt batteries.. no more than 3 volts ... perhaps some brands conduct better than others or use more batteries or bigger batteries... More power = more of a zap. Fun either way, as long as the Top know what they are doing and knows the capabilities of their particular device. Best wishes! LdyS

We have two of these lovely toys and found the trick to keep from burning someone was to use batteries that are about half dead.  There is still some bite but nothing as bad as when the batteries are fresh.  A friend of ours saw one and stuck it to the end of his tongue, he said it was about equal to a 9 volt battery.

You may want to remember that it's not the volts so much as the amps.."the volts jolt, but the joules cool" was what I was taught. The capacitor may hold more of a charge on some brands than ono others, you may be charging it longer, etc. The problems only get worse with moisture whether sweat, lube, water, etc. , as well as some folks just being more conductive than others. Remember it may be an "only 12" volt battery in your car but that can burn you as well as any branding iron if you are not careful, ask any mechanic about what happens when you drop a wrench and it doesn't explode before it welds the wrench to the posts.. ;P

You can pick up an inexpensive multimeter at any radio shack for ~15 dollars that can give you a better idea of what you are playing with as well as how conductive your target is in various states as this will change depending on exertion, stress, etc.

Have wanted one of these. Perhaps the difference posters are seeing is the power source and the way it was made. This one I found at http://www.electricflyswatter.net/ takes two D batteries and has a stated output of 1500 volts. The amperage is not listed. The rest that I found run off two AA batteries, but none state the voltage.
Also some have only one screen and some had a "charged" screen sandwiched between two plastic screen for safety. Guess that would make a big difference too.
I assume that all of these use an induction coil to raise the voltage, which at the same time lowers the amperage. The number of coils will determine the voltage that they emit. And it is the amperage, and where the current crosses in the human body, that really does the harm. From what I understand even a high amperage/ low voltage battery,  like a 12 volt car battery, could kill some one if the current is routed across the heart.

Thank you all for responding. I tend to lean toward the suggestion that the one I have might be defective. It is interesting to see the different pain levels here. I also like the idea of using batteries that aren't new. Interesting.

Most of what I learned about elec. play boils down to amps==bad, moisture==bad, x-body==bad, or very dangerous at the -very- least. I believe that you could do serious damage with as little as 5-7 volts if you failed to excercise the required care when playing with electricity. Of course some folks may like to play closer to the edge than I do, but as long as they understand and accept the risks (applies to all involved), it's really not any of my business how they play, nor to what level.  I'm not going to take that thought any further as it is off topic for this thread.

I've actually never met anyone who liked this toy- even people who like stun guns.  I'm sure someone out there exists though.

We've got that exact one, and of all the contraptions in the dengeon, I absolutely hate that one the most.  Even a small 'swat' by Sir on my backside with that swatter is enough for me to yell 'RED!' which is usually followed by 'Sir, PLEASE put that away!'

Eh.  Its not so bad really.  It feels about like a good pop with a single tail.  Sorta.  And its really quite tame compared to the cattle prod I've had used on me.  Somehow that sucker managed to get dismantled during a move, and amazingly enough, all the parts were never found.  And there are some attachments on the violet wand that are more evil than the flyswatter.    Its no walk in the park but... totally endurable if one MUST.

Ok - here I go bein a freak again, even in a sea of freaks!

I've had one of these lil jems used on me, and I absolutely Loved it!  Then again, I love electrical play, drool when I see Violet Wands, and get bouncy hyper happy when someone suggests using one on me.  If/when I finally get a couple of things situated to where I've got the spare cash laying around to start putting more toys in the toybag again (damn life's lil hassles like bills) I plan on adding both a VW and one of the flyswatters.

Ah the flyswatter- when I see it I just cringe.  If I know it is going to be used see it coming near me it is hard to stay still. If I dont know, I can be zapped over and over  again it doesnt bother me at all  I just Love that darn thing.

I bought mine at a Walgreens for about 5 bucks ( end of summer sale) Use's AA batteries and it has power and will burn skin. Just have to swat fast.
First time I ever saw one  and touched it  was about 10 years ago at the Boston Fetish Flea

Apparently the Zap depends on the manufacturer, perhaps some use better capacitors than others. I think someone mentioned this, but do keep in mind, the batteries it takes doesn't really equate to how much power the capacitor stores. As an example, a typical car has a 12 volt battery, but grab a coil wire and you will be quickly introduced to several thousand volts and a decent amount of amperage as well. We looked at one of these (electric flyswatters) at a BDSM event and apparently it was a good brand, because we pushed in the button, looked at each other funny and then put it back down on the table. We were told "oh no, you can't leave that on the table charged up, you have to discharge it". I, not being the one who pushed the button backed away from Shifted and left her to her own to do the deed. She smacked the wires, it arced with a fairly loud pop, she yelped and I'm damned glad she didn't have to go to the potty or we would have certainly been introduced to nonconsentual watersports the hard way.

ever heard the expression 'who put a bug up your ass?'  Some folks consider Volkswagens an extreme form of edge play.

A friend of ours brought one of those over in his toy bag to show us.  Another Dom friend fired it up and after getting a nod from my Dom touched it to my bare knee.
Well, so much for being a good behaved sub and not swearing a blue streak in front of others.
i also don't like the VW or getting accidental electrical shocks, so maybe it is just me.  i think it is just evil and glad that LL does not have one, and has no real interest in getting one.   Its just a little more than this one can handle.
