Hillwilliam -> Price of gas (7/2/2011 7:44:09 AM)

A post in the "you know youre getting old poll" prompted this one.

It's simple. What is the cheapest gas you EVER remember seeing? and preferrably where was it?

littlewonder -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 7:51:43 AM)

i remember seeing 75 cents when i was growing up in western pa in the 70's.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 7:53:38 AM)

30 cents, it was during the "price wars" back in the 70's I think. We sat in line to pay 30 cents, instead of 31 cents, which was the price across the street at another station.

eta this was in Cobb County Ga

AlwaysLisa -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 8:22:36 AM)

California, in the early 70's, 35 cents.   I still remember my grandfather pitching a fit when it topped 1.00

Musicmystery -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 8:24:18 AM)

24.9 cents, outside Auburn, NY. Dad was bitching about it. Very early 60s.

But in 2010 dollars, that's only $1.78.

Another "Gas War" price

Springfield MO about 1969.

18.9 cents/gallon

Of course, back then $5 would fill 'er up full service.

In the early 1970s when I was in grade school in mid-Missouri, they used to take us to the cafeteria to watch recorded programs.  I recall one that was addressing the future* and in it, they showed a gasoline pump were the price was over $1 per gallon!  At the time, the price was around 29 cents.

*I could swear this was also the program where they promised us flying cars by the turn of the century.  [;)]

windchymes -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 8:56:51 AM)

I remember 19 cents/gallon at the Redhead. You could pull up, drive over the cord and ding the bell, tell the attendant to give you a "dollars worth of regular" AND he would clean your windshield. And the dollars worth would last you a week. Good times.

pahunkboy -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 9:25:15 AM)

31.9 cents.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 10:12:36 AM)

24.9 in 1972 during a brief gas war.....by the time I got my license it had skyrocketed to an outrageous 31.9 in 1973....from there it just got ugly (as we know it today)

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 10:20:07 AM)

I remember the gas wars when the guy on one corner would sell it for 25 cents, the guy on the opposite corner would drop it to 24 cents, etc. I think the least I ever paid for gas that I remember was 19 cents a gallon. I had a Karmann Ghia that got about a zillion miles to the gallon, so a dollar's worth of gas would last nearly forever. And instead of the warning light, the Ghia had an emergency reserve, no gauge. So when it would start to die from no gas, I'd flip the lever & there was another gallon, so I could go at least a zillion miles before having to put more in. [8D] The other day I put $10 worth in & it barely registered on the gauge.

I am going to use my tax refund to fill the tank up all the way.

needlesandpins -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 10:35:09 AM)

blimey guys, i was looking at those prices and thinking how surprisingly they seemed to be on a par with here in the uk at the same times.......until i realised you were talking about per gallon!

we pay per litre and at the moment our prices stand at on average of £1.40/ltr and 70% of that is fricking tax.

I remember my mother complaining about 23 cents per gallon. In Greendale WI. I remember her only getting 2 dollars worth. I thing that's the most she ever got at one time.. There were constant gas wars going on between gas stations. Back then even thought the stations were, Mobil, Texico, Shell, Phillips 66, ect.. They were all independantly owned franchises. The gas wars stopped when the companies themselves took over the gas stations, and stopped the franchise system. Once that happened the prices just kept going up.

tazzygirl -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 12:49:40 PM)

53 cents a gallon in rural NC.

playfulotter -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 2:20:28 PM)

I don't remember the price when I was a child but I remember the stations having signs that said "Gas War"  when I lived in Huntington Beach, CA...I mostly remember you would get a present for buying gas like a Coca Cola glass or something else not worth much but fun...Banks gave away presents too...ha ha

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 2:23:08 PM)

I remember my Auntie June buying gas at certain stations because of the little goodies they'd give away if you bought a certain amount of gas. *sigh*

juliaoceania -> RE: Price of gas (7/2/2011 6:46:26 PM)

65 cents a gallon in around 1975ish...We were on a road trip to the Bay Area to visit my aunt and my dad commented on it.

My mom remembers when she was in high school it was 10 cents a gallon... imagine that!
