is it normal for one's pain tolerance to take a nose dive if someone hasn't played for a few months?

If you haven't eaten spicy food for a while, you won't be able to eat something very hot straight away, same principle.

yup, agree with all the above.

I didn't play for nearly a year and my pain tolerance was pitiful. But within a few weeks it was back to normal...thankfully!

it's been more than 3 yrs since I last played.. I know from my LASt time playing that my tolerance is about non-existent... I expect that it will improve, once I start playing again...

I wish you well!

i find my pain tolerance is affected by time, but also by my motivation. i can have all the tolerance in the world, but if something about the person just isn't doing it for me, i can't get into the right brainzone for it. if the person motivates me, i can endure a lot more just because he wants me to.

My pain tolerance is highest when I am bound and "helpless." :)

It is less so if I'm worried the guy doesn't know what he is doing (in this case, I am also unbound.)

It is non-existent if I am asked to do something to myself - clothespins in his hands are delightful, in mine, just not happening.

I haven't bottomed in over a decade, I estimate my PLAY pain tolerance to be about zero. I can still do piercings and such, no problem. Work your way up.

When I was a waitress my hands became almost immune to heat because I was accustomed to handing hot plates, etc. It could have been that my nerves in my hands became semi-damaged by heat, or it could be that my brain shut off the signal because I was exposed so often to the sensation. Whatever the reason it took literally years for my hands to become sensitive to heat again... but they are now back to what they used to be.

Yes - if i go for a long period without discipline, my pain tolerance is less. i also find it increases if the DOMINANT starts slow and builds up to harder strokes. Starting light and gradually increasing the pain works great

Hello,

Yes it is possible to become more sensitive to pain if you have not endured pain for a certain time period. It takes getting used to, but does vary from person to person.

i find mine is the same all the time except that my skin can be a little more sensitive at the time of the month i should be having a period. most women are the same and won't go for waxing and such as it hurts more at that time of the month. other than that my threshold stays pretty much the same whether i'm playing or not.

i agree with Lilly also though that mind set and the person has alot to do with it too.

Have you looked at this from a common sense perspective?  What other physical activity have you engaged in, then stopped for a period of time, were you able to pick up again at the same rate of endurance?

actually i have, LadyPact. i know of several factors that have changed since the last time i played. i've lost a considerable amount of weight for one. my mindset is different because i am happier than i was previously. i did well in my last semester of college and made a lot of new friends. not to mention the weather is different. it's a lot warmer now than it was when i last played (in march). i figure if i do play more my tolerance will go back up somewhat but i'm not sure if it'll go back to it's original level of tolerance. that's kind of what i think on this particular matter

Hi faded.  Your other factors are probably having an impact as well, specifically the weight loss.

I tend to think of this as any other activity.  For example, if you were jogging a few times a week for a period of time and got your endurance up to a five mile run, but then stopped jogging for a few months, you probably wouldn't have as easy of a run trying to make that five miles again.  A lot of people who have stopped playing for a period of time have to 'work their way back up' to the amount of play or pain they were able to do before.

Will it come all of the way back?  Hard to say.  For some it does and others it doesn't.  Keep practicing and find out.
