Have done all my life and now about to go off and do so this afternoon.

Latex johds & jacket way more sexy to wear IMO though. Same old leather boots though :D

Status: offline 		When I used to ride I rode English, but I never had a uniform, aside from a good pair of riding boots.

I believe the OP is think of the dressage uniform, which is quite spiffy. One of my sisters looked great in it until she changed to riding Western. Now she gets to be all spangly and glittery when she shows.

agreed about 'uniform'. you don't need anything special to ride any horse in any style. dressage and showing, which is what i do, have a similar style in that the are stricter than that of show jumping.

however, for everyday riding and handling i'll be in normal jods and boots.

as a kid i spent most of my riding life in jeans, although as an adult i don't find them quite so comfortable. i think that will be mainly down to the current styles that i don't like.

there's certainly no way i'd risk my latex around the yard for sure.

There's also more than one form of english riding. There's hunt seat/dressage and then there's saddle seat, which uses a completely different saddle.

Saddle seat is the longer coats, jods, short boots and a derby or top hat.

lol, i'm sorry but the way you americans describe out riding is so funny. what you mean is side saddle. but it is not ridden in short boots, we wear long boots if an adult and the 'coats' is called a habit. the hats are bowlers or silks. in english riding, for shows of any sort, adults must always wear long boots unless the traditional outfit of a particular breed states otherwise. things may be different over in america.

Status: offline 		needles.. we have a style called saddle seat here... come from the south... done on gaited horses like the tennesee walker, missouri fox trotter and some others like that...

editing to say that some train their horses to do the natural gaits of the above mentioned not just those as they do show arabians and morgans in saddle seat as well

Status: offline 		ah the high steppers, i like those, although i've never had chance to ride one. i've been told they are comfortable, but from some of the pics i've seen they look anything but. beautiful horses though. i guess they are similar to our hackney horses, although they are mostly driven.

You are wrong. It is saddle seat, not side saddle which is completely different. Saddle Seat is ridden on Morgan, Arabs, Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walking Horse. I should know I showed Morgan Horses on the circuit for about 20 years. The saddle we use is called a "flat saddle". It is ridden behind the center of motion and with long stirrups.

The habit for saddle seat is a longer coat, jods that come below the heel, a vest, a tie, short jod boots and a derby for daytime. For evening, it is a long tux coat, bow tie and cumberbund and a top hat.

Status: offline 		thanks for the vid OsideGirl. the thing is though the we are talking about English riding. what you are talking about is not traditional to this country, it would be turnout for a breed. in all my years of showing i have never even seen a class for the horses you mention except for Arabians which i bred and showed at top level for 20+ years. most certainly we do not show them in the style you mention. they are either shown traditionally English or in traditional Arabic dress.

hence why i misunderstood what you were talking about. saddle seat does not exist as a traditional English 'style' of riding in the uk. we use 'saddle seat' to describe where you sit in the saddle.

i was not being derogatory at all. Americans in general use terms to describe what we do in funny terms that we do not use for ourselves. you can call the style English all you like, but it's not seen here as a traditional form of riding, it's very much seen as American. and as for using google to look things up, yep it's great, but you will see that the whole first page for 'saddle seat uk' is mostly dedicated to describing the actual seat of the saddle, not the 'style' of riding.

so i will state again, as a style of riding here in the uk it is not traditional and you will not see any rider using it unless it's for an American breed. having done a bit more looking at the style though, i certainly hope it's more comfortable than it looks, coz it looks very uncomfortable. maybe you can help me with a question though. if these gaited horses were left barefoot to wear down naturally, are their feet that long or just grown that way with the shoes?

Status: offline 		I'm told Paso Finos have the most comfortable natural seats. I haven't ever ridden one, but a lot of the older riders switch to them.  They don't make good jumpers however, but just for hacking about.

What I really want to do is pleasure driving. That's always sparked my interest. Unfortunately I don't know of a barn in the area that teaches it.
