Republicants: the party of no jobs, no end to outsourcing, no single-payer health care

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Reminds me of the movie John Q.

Actually pahunky, it DID work.

He IS getting the medical care, and he was hoping to get a 3 year sentence to last him until he could qualify for medicare.

The only problem is, by only taking $1 he may be charged with a misdemeanor and he may not get the three years he was hoping for!!
.

If he gets less than 3 years, he will probably have to do another petty crime so he can stay in jail until he is 62 and will qualify for medicare.

I was going to start a thread on this, ya'll beat me to it.

Sad but interesting story, I am glad his story is being told.

Man robs bank for $1 so he can get health care

Very, very, interesting story.

Man robs bank for $1 so he can get health care

I don't find it interesting.  I find it horribly tragic and sad.  This man worked all his life, and then is a victim of "downsizing" of one sort or another and is too old to be hired somewhere else (ageism DOES exist) and is left with no health care options.

THIS is why we need health care reform.  I don't care how it happens, just that it happens.  The latest is how the new bill will allow MIDDLE CLASS people to qualify for medicaid.  Couples making up to $64K a year could potentially qualify for medicaid.  Such insanity.  You can NOT afford quality healthcare in this country making that amount, but I'll be damned if the politicians, who of course have excellent health care packages, are screaming in outrage.

At the end of the month, I will be without insurance.  No idea what I'm going to do.  I have fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy, past renal failure (possible recurring), diabetes (need insulin after the kidney failure) and herniated discs in my lower back and neck.  Guess the politicians figure since there is a family cemetary plot, I should just die and be done with it.

LafayetteLady, I find it terribly sad also, I should have used the word "sad".
Maybe you have not read all the many posts I have made about how fucked up our system is and how we need major changes, across the board.

Believe me, as sad as this story is, I am sure there are many more that don't make the news.
I am glad his story is being told, to shine a light on how desperate many people are.

I totally agree 100% the system is fucked up, and we have no real safety net for the millions of people falling down and between the cracks.

I certainly hope you are able to get the medical care and coverage that you need.
Good luck to you.
Peace and Blessings.

My comment wasn't made as a dig to you at all.  In a way, it IS interesting.  Interesting in the sense that this man developed a solid plan on how to get his much needed medical care.

The mere fact that people in our prisons and jails receive better health care than the poor and downtrodden is deplorable.

It's age 65 to be eligible for Medicare (I am saddened to admit I know first hand)... I think I heard he wants to get SS to support himself at 62.

We know families here in Mexico where a kid joined the Army because the whole family gets quality medical care through the military system. It's hard to reconcile that America is becoming or maybe has become a third world country on basic human rights like health care... but it sure appears to be the case.

The true cost of not converting to a single payer universal health care system that covers everyone is really high... in dollars and needless immense human suffering. My opinion is the reason it didn't happen is health care has become a cash cow like defense spending, the war of drugs and other scams that funnel a lot of 'profit' to the investor class in the US. Since they also own the government that makes the rules reform isn't a real possibility unless or until things get a lot worse for the other 98% of us.

I sensed that, but I can "hear" the sadness in your post, and it saddened me.
I hope you are able to get the medical care you need.
I am sending you a big hug from VA!

The poor who are often working two jobs just to make ends meet, and paying taxes out the wazoo so that the people in prisons can have their care. Ironic, isn't it? Freakin great system we have here, yeah?

Thank you submittous, I saw this story on the news.
I thought he himself said, he wanted to go to jail until he could get SS, than I read something about Medicare, so I got confused.
It could be SS, but he would still need the medicare unless he qualified for medicaid until he was 65?.

Holy cow batman, I thought you could get medicare at 62?
They are trying to pass laws in which me might have to wait until we are 72 to get social security and medicare, than many of us will have to commit crimes to get medical care.

I like the way, after he took the dollar he sat in the chair and waited for the police.
lol

This country is in a world of hurt and many are hurting, and these stories need to be told.
Things are getting worse for many, as each day passes by, something is going to have to "give" eventually.
Great post

I was thinking that. It is very common for people who are homeless to commit a petty crime because they know they will get three hots and a cot when the weather is freezing. It can keep a homeless person off the streets during the coldest part of the year. I was told this by a jail guard years ago.

I really see it as no different than what this man did, you need stuff, by getting arrested you get what you need (food and shelter, and now medical care)

I hate to say this, but I bet the free medical care in prisons will be a budget target soon....

Advocates for the homeless report they are seeing a new type of client: Blue-collar former homeowners with no criminal record who are so desperate, they’re stealing food and diapers.
And pregnant women without health insurance who are committing crimes in order to get medical care for their babies in jail.
“I am now starting to see a new type of offender — the working class desperate offender,” said Judy Martin, a discharge planner for the Manatee County jail.
Among those are mothers who have been arrested for shoplifting. They’re not stealing jewelry or perfume; they’re stealing clothing and food to try to keep their families afloat as a result of the recession, Martin said.
“These people had homes and businesses,” said Martin during a forum Tuesday sponsored by the Florida Council on Homelessness at the Salvation Army facility in Sarasota. “The economy changed, they lost it all.”

Its all so sad.. and unnecessary.

I hope Republicans get thrown out of office to make that possibility less likely.
