ORIGINAL: erieangel Blue-collar former homeowners began becoming homeless in the '80s, but with the foreclosure crisis it is happening with lightning speed today. Until Reagan nobody ever even heard the word 'homeless'. There were vagabonds, to be sure, vagrants and hobos but it was assumed these people chose to live that way. And many did. Some homeless still do chose to be homeless. The vast majority, however, do not. We have entire families now seeking shelter and food from soup kitchens. We have 18 yr. old boys who have no family, no job and mental health issues--i work with this demographic of homeless and too many of them end up in the justice system because of hopelessness. When Reagan closed California's state mental hospitals and that idea swept the nation, it was seen as a victory by the mental health advocates. As a former mental health patient and a current service provider, it was a grave mistake to do that without the necessary community supports of treatment, housing, training in independent living skills and financial aspects all put into place before hand. i've come to the conclusion the country simply does not care about any of us who do not earn at least 1/2M a year. They don't have to care about us, we must care about us, and rise up and change things. I like you Lady!!
