ORIGINAL: outhere69 Yeah, and that's why the whole doomsday "planetary alignment" stuff is bogus. Stuff's way too far away to have effects on us. And just not nearly massive enough Correct. There are two forces which far surpass any other with regard to the orbit of our planet. 1) Inertia - Our planet is moving through space very, very quickly and it has more than just a bit of mass. changing it's path would take one hell of a lot of force. 2) The gravitational pull of the Sun. As mentioned, distance is usually king - but it's relative. The sun is enormous, and even though we are about 8 Light-Minutes (A LONG way) from it, it's just so massive that it still exerts a remarkable gravitational pull on our planet. In fact, it exerts all the centripetal force necessary to keep the Earth rotating around itself rather than flinging off through the galaxy in a straight line as inertia would prefer. No offense, Pilot, but you seem to be "humor challenged". Twice now. Firm My apologies for finding science more interesting than your "humor". I'll try harder to laugh at your jokes and pretend like you're interesting next time. PPtk
