OttersSwim -> Our Puppy has Cancer... (6/17/2011 8:57:24 PM)

We learned today that our dear Bernese Mountain Dog, Forest, has bone cancer in his left foreleg.  It means that they will likely have to amputate the leg next week...it also means that microscopic cancer is likely already spread through his body.   We go in for more tests with him on Monday.  The vet said that dogs who get this type of cancer have a less than 20% chance of surviving two years...

Today was a day of tears and deep sadness.  We got Forest from the shelter last year and it has been such a great year with him.  Tomorrow will hopefully be a better day...

Hugs.

I've lost two golden retrievers to a fast growing cancer that is common to the breed. It always hurts.

I'm so sorry tohear your terrible news.  I hope the surgery goes well, and that the rest of his days with you are full of all the love and joy you can share.  He already knows how much he is loved.  And I'm sure he's returned that love hundredfold.

Dear Otter -
I'm happy you learned that there is a chance and that you are able to love your puppy RIGHT NOW. I'm happy that your puppy has a good home and will live whatever rest of his life he has with great devotion and kindness.

In the midst of all that, I'm so sorry for the icky news.

I'm happy you can cuddle your puppy as you deal with the icky news.

Man, that sucks. I feel for you. I went without having a doggy for years because I didn't want to survive him/her. So a friend finds a Shih-Tzu wandering around near a mall far north Atlanta. I had him two years, just long enough to get really attached, and then I lose him. I still have his ashes on my TV. Really sicks to lose a critter companion.

Peace.

I 'd wish there were more hopes to cling on to.

Otter, while this is terrible news, think how much better off the dog is with you as owners than with some person who wouldn't care, I'm sure that he's so much better off with you, where he gets all the love and support he needs.

Please check with the vet and possibly another vet how his chances are, if amputating the leg doesn't prolong his life and he will not have a great quality of life, it might be kinder to let him go. Having pets and having lost pets, I always try to think about what I would want for myself if I was in the position of the pet.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Our Puppy has Cancer... (6/18/2011 2:56:28 AM)

My heart goes out to you, your family and da puppy Otter.  As  bad as the news is, he's lucky enough to be with humans who care enough to get him the best treatment available for him.  May he outlive the expectations given by the vet and go on to a fruitful life with his all-time favorite owners.  If not, give him all the love I know you're capable of and you'll know when the time comes.  It's never an easy decision, a very tough one in fact, but there comes a time when letting go is the best thing we can do for our fufbabies.

Here's to hoping it all works out.

OttersSwim -> RE: Our Puppy has Cancer... (6/18/2011 7:01:06 AM)

Thank you to all of you.  This news was just so unexpected.  He was exhibiting symptoms of going lame and our primary vet thought it was a bit of foating bone in his shoulder.  We were going to the surgeon for a steroid shot to help him...and they took a more detailed xray and found the cancer and the real cause of his being lame in his wrist bone.

If he is not showing signs of the cancer in his chest, then we will proceed with the amputation and get him through it.  The cancer literally consumes the bone, so if you don't remove the leg, he will eventually break it.  It is a delicate balance of doing what you think is the right and responsible thing for him...and frankly it just sucks...we love him so much...

Today we are going to a vitamin store to get him on two herbal remedies that are reputed in studies to have great effect on cancer in dogs.  We will start him out on those over the weekend, then consult with our vet and the surgeon on Monday and Forest will have a full panel of chest xrays to determine where else the cancer may be showing.

We both just came home yesterday and stopped.  Forest slept with us on the bed last night - a treat.

We have decided to simply bless the time he has left with us and to make it as happy, healthy, and pain free for him as we can.

<3 to all of you for your words of support.  [:)]
