Ah but, what one has to look at is what is being gained by pursuing a war on drugs

That is a good question: Why is the Obama administration saying they have ended the war on drugs, yet continue to make a higher rate of arrests, and budget money towards punishment, rather than treatment?

What special interest groups or corporations are gaining from a continued war on drugs?

I was so eager to post this today, the 40th anniversary of Nixon's War on Americans, that I forgot to add this...

Another day, another scathing report on our counterproductive drug policy. Ho hum. We'll still vote for Obamney, and we'll keep locking up more of our people than ANY OTHER COUNTRY.

I think we need to keep beating this dead horse. Drug prohibition is a waste of money, time and perfectly good law enforcement resources. Both parties are the same on this issue.

Arrests higher under Obama's term? That stuff you're smoking that you think is weed, is more than likely angel dust.

we're added 1/2 a dozen decrim and medical states. And since marijuana were a MAJOR contributor to arrest statistics overall, you will find that arrests IN GENERAL are down in the US.
And while I support legalization, I also GET that it's being talked about so favorably is because some deep pockets (many outside this country I would say) are paying well-recognized individuals to do these "Studies". What's really funny is all they have to do is take data that was largely repressed from the public eye and basically just publish it with the rubber stamp of ex-cops and judges... Suddenly, you got an eye-opener.
I think we can pretty much rest assured that there will at least be an easily accessible c nearby country that goes "Full Legal" on drugs in the next few years. There is big money behind drugs and now they want to parlay their profits and they see troubled economies as ripe targets for their 'message',
If you think this is about finally a bunch of cops and judges finally getting honest with themselves, you're high.

edited because I spelled cops like Copps Coliseum.

"The Obama administration's new drug czar says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting "a war on drugs," a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use."

Nothing there about ending it.

Are federal arrests up?Or are those state numbers?

And aren`t more resources going to treatment?

The private prison industry and those companies who make those nifty drug-test kits our kids are so fond of.

My question, how long before Obama`s critics accuse him of trying to hook our kids on drugs?

From the linked article, which is what I was directly commenting on:

"Although President Obama has talked about respecting states’ rights to enact medical marijuana laws, his DEA has raided state-legal medical marijuana providers at a higher rate than under the Bush administration."

Bolded section my emphasis.

From the article:

"showing how the Obama administration is ramping up a war it disingenuously claims that it ended two years ago."

Bolded section my emphasis.

"The administration also said federal authorities would no longer raid medical-marijuana dispensaries in the 13 states where voters have made medical marijuana legal. Agents had previously done so under federal law, which doesn't provide for any exceptions to its marijuana prohibition. "

This was printed on May 14, 2009

"Federal agents raided state-sanctioned medical marijuana greenhouses and dispensaries in several Montana cities on Monday, prompting an outcry from legalized pot suppliers. "

This was printed Mar 14, 2011 and there are many more showing arrests and raids of state sanctioned Medical Marijuana businesses.

This is part of what the original OP's article is talking about.

The war on drugs has been ineffective and have wasted taxpayers billions of dollars. It has helped to make warlords richer and has takien law enforcement eye off the real problem.

It don't suprise Me....Obama is always saying what he thinks America wants to hear while doing what ever he wants. He was so anit war.....now he has us fighting on 4 fronts. And that's not including the war on drugs! He says he is for drilling yet he has a mortoram on drilling in the gulf, putting thousands out of work, gives billions to brazil to drill in the gulf aand promices to be their best coustomers. In the mean time he sics the epa on our energy companies shutting down 6 plants...again puting hundreds out of work and its gonna cost us more in energy costs....
Is he trying to shut down America? His science czar Holdern believes in de-industerlizing America cos we are such pigs we use more energy than any other country (duh we are mutiple times bigger than most countries).
That's the progressive way!

What do people expect? He obivousely has an agenda and it does not seem to be protecting or growing America!

So what is to be gained by continuing the war on drugs ?

Who or what is benefitting from this stance?

Fast reply.

Why do I suddenly have some kind of weird flashback of that stupid egg in the frying pan?
.
This is your post.

This is your post on drugs.

It made no damn sense, but I think you would confuse the crap out of Me if I really asked you any questions.
