The other thing is why is there a donut shop right near a park bench?

That is not a reputable source.

Actually, it is. According to an online article I read:
"The flagship Gothamist blog has received a number of awards and commendations, including six Bloggies nominations. It was named a "Forbes Favorite",[5] and a BusinessWeek "Best of the Web".[6] In 2007, Gothamist was named blog of the year by Wired magazine and given a Wired Rave Award.[7]"
Much more reputable than lots of sources one sees bandied about here and elsewhere on the web.........luci

"Sitting on a park bench..."

The only thing i can think is they have issues in that area with people sitting there when kids are there and people have complained.  And the other story does state that the cops have been reprimanded by "not doing their jobs" so to speak, because they only give people warnings but now write the citations to show they are doing their jobs.

This isn't a concept to bitch about the officers in question, but the process all together.

And while there may not have been contact info on the ticket, it's not that hard to find the court clerk office on the internet.

I think the cops have a bit more to do than writing citations of ladies eating donuts on a park bench, but from what it sounds like -- these cops were doing their job and in this day and age, risking their job by giving a warning rather than writing a summons, i agree with what they did.  Let the ladies fight it out in court or at the city hall if they don't like the laws.  The cops are there to enforce same and unfortunately, they have been told to write the summons and not warn because it will be noted on their job performance as not doing anything all day if they just go with the latter.

Angel,  the sticking point on this one- sounds like it is the poorly designed set up of that park.  It is not the standard -no adults -  design.  With the fence and proper signage.  If they dont want people sitting there- get rid of the bench- especially since it is near to a vending stand for snacks.

barelynangel -> RE: Cops ticket women for sitting on park bench and eating doughnuts (6/16/2011 4:20:13 PM)

PA, what stories like this do is try and place the fault on the cops for giving the ticket.  Determining whether or not the sign and sit up is correct, that's not the cops call.  The cops enforce the laws, they don't make them.  The call is the city's.

In the end, its stories like this that focus on what the cops have done when they should be focused on what the city has done.  The cops did their jobs.

^ then I feel so much safer since I might get a ticket for breathing.

FullCircle -> RE: Cops ticket women for sitting on park bench and eating doughnuts (6/16/2011 5:06:57 PM)

Why is my tax money being spent on parks I can't use. We didn't have parks in my day we had to make our own fun by playing with traffic and testing to see if communal elevators were water tight. The world's gone mad I tells ya.

TheBanshee -> RE: Cops ticket women for sitting on park bench and eating doughnuts (6/16/2011 5:27:24 PM)

I believe the intent of this law was probably a way to keep potential pedophiles away an area where children are around, not really about two ladies having a couple of doughnuts, yet they have to enforce the law evenly.  They have to be able to say to the creepy guy watching kids on the swings to move along and not be accused of being unfairly enforcing the law.

Yes they also put fire axes in glass cabinets to stop potential axe murderers I've noticed.
