MasterJohnSteed -> How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 9:00:16 AM)

I've been invited to give a presentation to a computer conference in Charleston SC at the end of next month. The presentation/speech, is going to be at one of those ultra expensive all suite hotels down there, where like the cheapest room is $500

I figure this is going to get my name in front of lots of people, many of them with lots of dollars to throw around. So if they pay me for this or not I'm doing it.

I want to be able to include this on my resume, I figure that by saying I gave a lecture on Internet Security 101 and 102 to a group of non profit big wigs. Companies will look at this and say "Hey we want this guy working for us"

I am not sure how though I need to put this down, it certainly wouldn't be under education, since I am not working for a company right now, this is totally on me. Should I put this as a publication or work experience?

On a curriculum vitae you have a special section for such things... depending on your field you may want to switch to that format to present your qualifications....

I would flat out say you gave a 123-XYZ seminar with some other panelists.  No one knows what a curricculim vitea is.

Well PA, I won't be a panelist, I'll be the one and only presenter, on security. I am currently waiting on approval of topics from their project coordinator.

There are other ways to approach this:
You can list it under "Relevent experience".

And if it is paid then it is employment and your job would then be a presenter on X subject at Z conference.

I knew what a curriculum vitae was at the age of 9 and as an employer I expect to see one attached to a résumé for any professional in a field where continued education is important.

I like this idea.

Many people know what a curricculim vitea is, I use one for certain jobs, and a resume for others....

What you meant to say is that YOU do not know what one is.

Not exactly true. YOU don't know what a c.v. is, but I'd imagine that most employers do know. If they don't, he doesn't want to work for them.

If this experience is crucial to your getting a job, and that job is highly technical and deals with training others, being expected to demonstrate techniques, etc... I would attach a curriculum vitae to your resume... it would highlight your knowledge base, and how others have relied on your expertise in your field. It just looks extra spiffy and professional that you have one

Except his goal is to actually get paid.    No one speaks latin anymore.

They are written in English[8|]

You said you went to college, and you do not know what a CV is, or their appropriate use?

What I do know is he needs to sell his skill set.   That means using which ever words that will nail the sale.

...some are lucky to know what resume is-  or cum laude.   Let alone to turn the sale into a Latin lesson.

juliaoceania -> RE: How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 11:07:47 AM)

never mind

pahunkboy -> RE: How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 11:17:51 AM)

The OP has 3-4 seconds to make an impression.  The seminar is impressive and should be listed.

juliaoceania -> RE: How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 11:25:10 AM)

Listen.... I feel kinda like a heel for my responses to you on this thread. I do not like feeling as though I am bashing people for what they obviously do not know. There is no sin in not knowing something, and I shouldn't have posted these snarky replies..

On the other hand, you encouraging the OP to exclude what might be an invaluable tool in finding a job is not a wise thing to do. He should be reading up on more ways to sell what he has to offer, not restricting himself. How one applies for a job depends very much on where they are applying to, and what is the standard for that industry, the type of position one is going up for. It is a good idea that anyone that applied themselves in any way in college keep both a CV and a resume on hand. The CV can be a running template for updating your resume because it is a highly detailed account of an individual's history, both in regard to employment, educational history, academic achievement, and contributions to a given field.

In the case of the Opening Poster, he wants to highlight his contribution to his field, depending on the job and their particular emphasis of what sort of employee they are looking for, it might be a good idea to have a CV on hand in the event he needs one. Many professionals (most that I know) have both.

pahunkboy -> RE: How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 11:29:51 AM)

Julia-  not a problem.   You are a long time poster-  ....everything is cool.

In a way we need to see the whole resume - to polish it up.  It is useful to have an objective party do so.   So a pro- could very well be a good idea here-  tho friends could also help.

LafayetteLady -> RE: How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 11:38:34 AM)

~FAST REPLY~

A CV is only going to be appropriate in a circumstance where extensive education, publication or things such as this seminar apply. If he has nothing more than a bachelor's degree or less and this is the first/only seminar he was speaking at, a CV is going to look sparse and empty.

CVs' tend to apply more to management and academic positions as opposed to the simple mid level position. In other words, if the OP is looking to head up the IT Security Department, a CV may apply. However, if he is just looking for a job in IT security it might not.

Putting this as "relevant experience" on his resume is going to be his most likely bet. Having business cards and copies of that resume at the event even better.

pahunkboy -> RE: How do I put this on my Resume?? (5/30/2011 11:45:57 AM)

It has been a good 12 years since I had to do a resume.  So I am out of the loop.

Anyhow- I am sure John- that anyone here would be happy to review you resume.    The whole thing should read well-  say enough with out wasting the time of the reader.

When I did mine in the past- I had a friend look over- and found typos and things I never seen.   But then the friend got carried away- on a rewrite- and I told her it had to be my own work.   I am glad that she found the typos and grammatical errors.
