littlewonder -> RE: Is BDSM a "Lifestyle" (5/12/2011 4:07:14 PM)

I don't call how we live a "lifestyle"...just life, a traditional relationship...man as head of household.

I've never understood why people have ever needed special terms for it or to make it into something more than just life.

My family says I'm unique and special... *Pout*

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Is BDSM a "Lifestyle" (5/12/2011 4:46:03 PM)

I guess to me it is a lifestyle. It's how I live everyday. My service and owned status is constantly on my mind, its is always the centre of my awareness. My focus is on Hanners, on her wants and happiness. Actually i guess its less a lifestyle, than a way of life, if you get what I mean.

Sylvere said it quite accurately already.

Yep.....but not with my accent...:)

I can repeat it with a British (BBC), Scottish (sort of), or Russian (Boris&Natasha) accent if you like.  [:D]

Now there is a mental image.  Boris & Natasha explaining BDSM.

jewelsthepoet -> RE: Is BDSM a "Lifestyle" (5/12/2011 7:43:47 PM)

It depends on the person or people involved. For almost everyone i know it is a lifestyle

Do you think BDSM is a "lifestyle"? I tend to think of it as a way of interacting, rather than a way of living.

BDSM is an umbrella term that doesn't go very far in describing a specific "lifestyle" until you get a little more specific with all the categories that fit under it. Even then, for most, whatever is practiced is not so much a "lifestyle" as it is a diversion or sensual hobby. In order for something to be a lifestyle, it has to be incorporated consistently into the way you live. Considering it that way makes the term inapplicable for many.

That's how I was thinking of it too. BDSM could be a lifestyle in the same way golf or chess could be a lifestyle. But for most people, even avid golfers and chess players, those activities will just be an activity.

Exactly. Without a doubt, the term is highly overused in the "alt" collective.

~FR~
I think it can be a lifestyle if you're immersed in it constantly, but it doesn't mean it has to be. There's 24/7TPE on one end of the spectrum and bedroom-only kink on the other, with multitudes of gradations in-between. Daddy and I go to five, sometimes six, functions a month that are BDSM/kink-related, incuding munches, discussion groups, and play parties. I wear my necklace/collar 24/7. But does that mean it's my lifestyle? Not necessarily. We go to vanilla functions also. When I hear "BDSM lifestyle" I just figure it's some people's way of saying they're kinksters.

Yes and no.

It is what you make of it.  I've had women surrender themselves to me for a period of a few hours - and others that wanted to have no time limits.

It can be a sex game or it can be a lifestyle.  It's up to you (and your partner.)

it does tend to grow on you so that hours become days or weeks at a time.  It can even be permanent.  It's all your own decision as to how it goes.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I view it as well.  I love to play golf, but I don't live a golf lifestyle.

If there is a BDSM lifestyle, then I'd certainly like to hear someone define what that entails.  I doubt we'd get two answers that are even similar.  But of course, that's why I don't believe that there is such a thing as a "BDSM community" either.  There's just a collection of disparate parts that have little in common.  But that's another conversation.

If you said that someone lives an heiress lifestyle, I can create a pretty good image in my mind of what that entails.  If you say that you live a vegan lifestyle, I can create a fairly accurate image of what that entails.  Same thing for a Jehovah's Witness lifestyle.  Or a redneck lifestyle.  Or a an upper middle class lifestyle. Or a Buddhist monk lifestyle.  Most people would list similar things that constitute each of these "lifestyles".  But with a "BDSM lifestyle", you'd be hard-pressed to find two people who would even give you a similar description of what the "BDSM lifestyle" entails.  So if nobody can even agree on what a BDSM lifestyle is, then how can it truly exist?

-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you sit at home all day and surf dominatrix porn on the internet?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you are a married guy who pays a pro Domme to spank you once or twice a month?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you are a married couple who practices a 1950's style household?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you log onto the computer and get on a webcam everyday after work so your on-line Dom can stare at your tits and watch you masturbate?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you are a lesbian couple who likes a bit of rough sex?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you are a married couple who both enjoy outside lovers?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you get locked in a cage for at least 10 hours a week?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that you're a man who likes to dress in women's clothing?
-Does a "BDSM lifestyle" mean that your Dom/Domme pees on you at least once per day?

If your opinion is that a "BDSM lifestyle" is all of the above, then you've pretty much proven that there is no such thing as a "BDSM lifestyle"  Instead, it's just a catchy phrase to encompass any sexual activity that is outside of the societal norm.  That is NOT the definition of a lifestyle.
