Louve00 -> Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 8:38:12 AM)

How much ya wanna bet the GOP will find a way to defend their rich friends. [8|]

After the economy slipped into recession in 2008, millions of Americans received unemployment benefits to make ends meet -- including almost 3,000 millionaires. According to U.S. Internal Revenue Service data, 2,840 households reporting at least $1 million in income on their tax returns that year also collected a total of $18.6 million in jobless aid. They included 806 taxpayers with incomes over $2 million and 17 with incomes in excess of $10 million. In all, multimillionaires reported receiving $5.2 million in jobless benefits.

The culture of greed.

Entitlement for the people who wanna dump entitlements
when they can afford it

Louve00 -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 10:50:23 AM)

Exactly!!!  And how loud the GOP screamed for the tax breaks of those millionaires claiming benefits.

Its so mind boggling.  And I wonder if half of this nation will ever wake up to this unbelievable atrocity!??

mnottertail -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 10:56:28 AM)

It is mystifying to me.  Here, one has been assured by neo-cons and teabaggers that this found money (from tax reductions or other corporate welfare plots) was going to create jobs. This isn't the first time they been wrong about this, it won't be the last.   So, it turns out that some of these shiftless lazy people who are looking to suck up at the trough of entitlements instead of getting a job, just like enterprenurial enterprising capitalistic real american folk who pay their mortgages........make in the neigborhood of a couple mill a year?

No...they will not...But at least the Church is...well sorta....from the Catholic U. he is giving a speech at next week.  It is from faculty members from the school and other other Catholic universities.

“Mr. Speaker, your voting record is at variance from one of the Church’s most ancient moral teachings” of caring for the poor, they write:
Your record in support of legislation to address the desperate needs of the poor is among the worst in Congress. This fundamental concern should have great urgency for Catholic policy makers. Yet, even now, you work in opposition to it. The 2012 budget you shepherded to passage in the House of Representatives guts long-established protections for the most vulnerable members of society. It is particularly cruel to pregnant women and children, gutting Maternal and Child Health grants and slashing $500 million from the highly successful Women Infants and Children nutrition program. When they graduate from WIC at age 5, these children will face a 20% cut in food stamps. The House budget radically cuts Medicaid and effectively ends Medicare. It invokes the deficit to justify visiting such hardship upon the vulnerable, while it carves out $3 trillion in new tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy.

thishereboi -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 11:05:21 AM)

Well they could always put a cap on it. If you make about x amount of dollars a year and are laid off or fired, you can't collect benefits.

Louve00 -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 11:28:26 AM)

That would work for me!! LOL.

Mezrem -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 11:49:16 AM)

It is people gaming the system and you see it through out every level. Even I'm hard pressed to feel sorry for some cases like this.. just as I'm hard pressed to see why we should pay for those who use the welfare system as something to live on forever. I know plenty of people on unemployment who could have found work.. but they turn their noses up because it's not the right kind of job. I once told my grandfather a job was not good enough... When my ears stopped ringing I took my ass to work.

Musicmystery -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 11:53:29 AM)

I'd be in favor of a workfare program.

We'll find something for them to do, I'm sure.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 12:49:27 PM)

It's an outrage. Disabled Americans on supplemental security income can't get married or in some states even live with someone without having their meager $500-$600 checks reduced and losing their state health insurance (anyone with an income that small needs at least one roommate). If they do get married and/or live with someone and don't report it, they can be prosecuted for fraud. Yet people who make over $1 million a year can collect unemployment checks they don't need and it's perfectly legal.

And now we know there are plenty of people who don't need unemployment, and still claim benefits that they're not entitled to.  I'll tell you this much...I would rather pay into a system that will help someone at poverty level, even if they can get a minimum wage job (which, in the end won't pay all their monthly bills from month to month), than pay into a system that lets millionaires claim entitlements to add to the millions they already have in the bank.  Rest assured, the people getting medicaid and foodstamps don't have millions in their bank account!

Where are the conservatives on the board?  They should be OUTRAGED at this waste of tax dollars.

Louve00 -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 1:25:54 PM)

(They're probably wracking their brain to defend this!!!...or attack poor people for doing the same thing!  [8|]

SilverMark -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 1:30:09 PM)

Although I do agree those with millions shouldn't claim UN-employment benefits, they are entitled. Unemployment is based on quarters worked and moneys earned during those quarters, there are no restrictions on how much was made, only on how little was made. I know, it sucks but it is the way the states I have dealt with all dole out unemployment.

tazzygirl -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 1:34:39 PM)

I was wondering the same thing, Mark. These people paid into the program. As the article states, not everyone was the "millionaire". The household income may be 1 million, but if one person gets laid off, there goes that "million" level.

ETA

So, do we now propose means testing for unemployment? Can we go then to means testing for medicare?

Yea, it does suck.  I get the point that unemployment pay is unemployment pay and they paid their share into the system (unless there was a tax loophole there for them, in place there).  I suppose, I'll take back the mentality that they aren't entitled to unemployment.  I'm supposing they go through all the steps and turning in names of places they're looking for work, just like anyone else on unemployment.  And as has been stated here so many times by so many people.  A job is a job, and if a millionaire losing his job will actually bring him down to the struggling middle class, (because he shouldn't turn down a job regardless of former pay) then all I guess I should say is....."join the clue, we won't exclude you".  But I have a hunch it doesn't quite work that way.

Mezrem -> RE: Entitlements for millionaires! (5/11/2011 3:38:59 PM)

Been there and worked three jobs to keep from going on assistance. I was raised by people who taught me accepting hand outs when you could work was a shamefull thing. I'm more then happy to give to offer a person a hand up because they fell on hard times. But if they can work then they should even if it does not meet all the bills. I'm more willing to help those that try then those who sit there with their hand out begging.

(And to cut off some of the flames.. yes I know there are some out there that really do need the help and in my view we have an obligation to help those people. On the other hand if you are honest about it I'm sure you would agree there are people on assistance that have no reason in the world to be there.)
