OK, so Carol and I are exploring bondage and we both like the aesthetic aspects of rope. Sooooo.... which of you kinky folk has a book recommendation (or a good web site)? Ideally something that starts out with "can barely tie a granny knot" and works from there.

Palliata -> RE: Rope Bondage (5/4/2011 2:47:17 PM)

http://www.twoknottyboys.com has great video guides on their downloads page

ResidentSadist has a link to a great booklist in his signature. There's one on rope bondage on the list if I recall right.

Shibari you can use, by Lee Harrington. Pretty much shibari for dummies, so it is my favorite.

Thats a start, the big deal when talking to the rope guys is getting the japanese names straight with what the fuck they are.

The turtle harness (I call it a cargo net) is called a kikkou.  Sucks to be you neh?

LOL.

Also, go get registered at ESINEMS site (and he is a great guy to talk to, and he is right here, there are others from those sites here, and ...)

Well, thats the jumpstart, there is a place I know (you can mail me, cuz I don't want to piss anyone off) for some other stuff handy.

If you do decide on public presentations and you are still in my neck of the woods, i really recommend going to one of Max's workshops at the CSPC. Great speaker and presenter.

Between the 100+ videos at Two Knotty Boys and 10 basic ties at Twisted Monk, you should have the basics and more covered.  Whether you want to apply 75 feet of in a couple of minutes to restrain someone or get artistic and spend time turning someone into a human rope art exhibit, those videos should teach you the next step beyond granny knots and get your teeth sunk into it quickly.  Have fun!

I'll second some of the works already mentioned here. We're fairly new to bondage and the D/s dynamic and have successfully been using the books by Two Knotty Boys and the "Shibari You Can Use" book.

I found this site helpful as well.

Enjoy!

Great advice everyone. I'm consuming various web pages as I get to them and noting what works for me and what doesn't. I'm realizing there are two distinct branches of "bondage"... decorative and restrictive.... and I like both. Well, even when it's meant to actually restrain, I still like decorative. Judging from some of those photos I think I'm going to need to run out and by about 3 miles of various colored rope. Man, some of those setups are just intense. It's hard to believe you can get that much rope around such a slender model ~chuckles~

I'm glad you asked this question, leadership. :) I'm gonna need to bookmark the thread and come back later. I don't know any more resources than what's here, but as a quick note: I noticed the TKB have books available on Kindle, which I thought was just great...if you have a smart phone, you can always have the reference material at hand. :)

leadership527 -> RE: Rope Bondage (5/5/2011 1:23:46 PM)

*laughs* You're welcome PnP... although I fear that any last lingering claims to vanilla-ness are, at this point, doomed to be nostalgic memories. I'm probably gonna need to go out and buy some leather pants and boots now.

Bertandlaerie -> RE: Rope Bondage (5/5/2011 2:53:01 PM)

It's amazing how quickly you use up the rope in some of the ties, particularly the tortoise shell harnesses. I don't remember who said it (it's buried in the archives of these boards somewhere I believe), but the advice was to start with 100 feet of rope cut into sections of 50 feet, 30 feet, and 20 feet. That's what we've started with and it gives us enough to play with without going too crazy yet. The 50 footer is good for a body harness with some to spare, the 30 footer for breast bondage, and the 20 footer for a crotch rope or light breast bondage.

You should mail me at some point.  Anyway, those turtle harnesses are one thing, as are leggings and gauntlets for using up rope.  The real bastard is corsets.  You might need her standing in a very wide open space and command her to move forward and back as you tie.

If you are gonna get this on, go buy some cheap clothesline rope, and tie her, then cut and measure it custom for all the cargo ties. Like kikkou on her torso, legs and arms (using larkshead knots to attach it to the torso kikkou) you now have a multiplicity of tying points to tie that bitch to anything!!!!! LOL!!!!  Thats why I call them cargo nets. Once you have that under your belt, you will know how you want to cut your spendy rope.

Anyway, adding on to the rope with square knots is good, because that tail (the leftovers) is alot of shit to whip around in a normal size house, and insure you run it thru a dead hand (yours) as you are whipping it around performing the tie, so that you dont take her eyes out with a wild end.

You got tons of good recommendations, so I won't repeat.

I'm thinking with your personality, you're really going to like the decorative type.  I can almost see you now trying to perfect your knots and working towards precision goals.  I'm more the restrictive type (when I tie at all).  Nine times out of ten, I don't care what the knots look like.  I just want the rope to do the job.

By the way, I want pics.

We are Twisted Monk fans.

Also, if a Grue ever comes your way, they are a great way to learn about ties (and other stuff) with regular kinky peeps.

For those reading this thread in the future, my advice is to skip the Two Knotty Boys offerings. Their instructions seem to rely on divine intervention occurring at some point. My own impression is that if you are already at least intermediate level then perhaps you'd get some ideas from the books. Perhaps they might be inspirational, but instructional they are not.
