School Lunches in France

This is absolutely amazing and I seriously suggest that American public school lunch programs can learn a lot from this video.

All I can say is WOW!!!

Enjoy.....

the problem is schools here in America don't have the money to provide such foods, to hire enough employees for such preparations or to provide the high tech equipment that they have there. I have volunteered in American school cafeterias and I've found that the cafeterias are given the bare minimum to serve children and they have to make do with what they have.

It's unfortunate but the schools in America are just not taken very seriously at all by our government.

I agree with you LW...but this is an issue that really needs much greater focus by both government and the public. One thing mentioned in the video is the growing rate of obesity (worldwide) with a lot of it attributed to fast food and this should also include junk food (snack foods) as well as packaged meals (like lunchables).

Many people fail to realize that it doesn't a whole lot of extra effort to prepare nutritious meals as opposed to opening some containers, adding water and microwaving or heating on the stove. Even many of the latter can be enhanced and made to be more nutritious by adding wholesome ingredients.

Yeah really. I saw that one too. I don't know if France would love me, but I'm pretty sure that I would love France!

Greetings,

In my opinion an omission of resources is not the culprit. You're basically addressing two fundamentally opposing philosophies regarding food, its consumption, and the art of dining as a whole. The cultural differences are striking and embedded in each and our school programs are a reflection of these things. Americans place a greater emphasis on simplicity and quickness whereas the French value taste and quality ingredients. Sacrificing flavor at the expense of convenience is the antithesis of their ideology while we do it all the time.

Namaste,

~porcelaine

Very cool clip. Vive la Fance (lunches!!).

I wondered how much US school lunches cost. The most recent figures I found were for the 2007-2008 school year. The articles I skimmed said the costs ranged from $1.98-2.90 for US lunches.

As a teacher, I can attest that the money comments above are right on target.   We just fired well over 200 Tomahawk missiles on Libya at a cost of $600,000 per missile.   My school have just under 1,000 children and our annual budget is less than the cost of 3 of those missiles.    We expect and demand the Mercedes of education, but we're only willing to pay the money to buy a beat up Pinto.

My benchmark for lunch cost is $1.07 each. Breakfast is 89 cents, I think, and after school program snack is 43 cents.

We manage to offer 3 main entree choices, 2 fruit and veggie choices, and one "dessert" choice. Our desserts are fruit based. Cinnamon apples or peaches, frozen 100% fruit juice bars, etc.

We offer one fresh fruit and veggie per day, and we do get locally grown as often as we can.

The video was interesting, but asking most parents here to pay 5 to 6 bucks for lunch would result in kids bringing chips and a juice box for lunch I believe.

Wow thats gorgeous

When I was once at a school where we could eat at school back home (Germany) we had great food, so I can't complain about bad experiences really, but thats of course not anywhere near that despite that I have great memories of that time Though, much better than what it appears to be at american and UK school meals.

True that would be a bit much on a weekly basis especially if you have multiple children in the lunch program.

However, in the video, it also stated that the parents pay only what they can afford and the French government (city, state, whatever) picks up the rest, apparently without question.

The lunch that the former casino cook was serving for 2,50 was nothing to scoff at either.

Yes Phoenix, the lunch at German schools is still rather good, even if not as awe inspiring as the French ones. At the moment I pay 3,30 Euro per lunch for my kids, and they get a appetizer of salad, soup or some small other thing, a choice of three entees, one meatless, with at least a choice of two fresh vegetables, and a dessert choice skewed to the healthy side. The food is cooked fresh on site, and they use local and in season products as well as organic stuff as much as possible. We get the meal plan two weeks in advance, the selection can be changed till one day before.

Who determines what the parents can afford????    What you describe is the same as the free & reduced lunch program we have in the U.S., but you have apply for it and you have to qualify for it.   It is not without question and France is the same way.

The school my daughter attends here; lunch costs 3.75 per day; she refuses to eat it though. Said it was so bad, she would perfer to go hungry than eat the slop that they served...her words, not mine. So, she takes a lunch to school instead.

Because of what she eats, it costs me about 5 to 6 dollars a day for her to take a lunch, but at least I know she's eating.
(and just for reference, she eats very healthy...a banana, an apple, a tomato, some carrots, water, and some kind of sandwich...depends on what she is in the mood for...it's usually salami though )

when my daughter was in school her lunch cost I think 2.55. She never ate it though. She'd either pack something, not eat lunch at all or grab junk food that was for sale in the cafeteria or her and her friends would have "lunch parties"....they'd all bring in something and make a little gourmet picnic at the table lol. It helps that my daughter loves to cook and she was the envy of the lunchroom on those days and everyone wanted to be a part of their table lol.
