As a teacher, I can attest that the money comments above are right on target.   We just fired well over 200 Tomahawk missiles on Libya at a cost of $600,000 per missile.   My school have just under 1,000 children and our annual budget is less than the cost of 3 of those missiles.    We expect and demand the Mercedes of education, but we're only willing to pay the money to buy a beat up Pinto.

Muttling, true, we spend at least $49 billion on foreign aid most of which is stolen or lost or..... makes Mercedes Benz dealers all over the world rich, time to start taking care of our own!
I've always thought Teachers are the nobalist proffession and we should take that money that's being wasted and spend it on you guys.
And that includes better food service in schools and better infrastructure.
I remember the days of the "Lunch ladies" cooking up mashed potatos and fish patties on fridays. Never salads.
Now don't correct my spelling, diction or punctuation.

$6 for a lunch seem high to me.

Not for a mass scale lunch.

2 of us can eat for that- a dinner cooked at home- and often get an extra meal a piece out of it.

i have a sneaking suspicion that there isn't a great difference between what's being served in American schools and what many children eat at home. And if most were required to record their meal consumption for the duration of one week the results would be rather telling. As much as people complain about the quality of the food provided, i can recall how many individuals brought well constructed meals when my daughter was in school. The ones that didn't care for the cafeteria selections chose to dine on local fast food. The appreciation and commitment for better eating doesn't begin at school. The philosophy should be instituted at home. After all, children learn what they live.

Just talk to the high school home economics teachers and you'll be stunned.    Many kids today don't know how to pre-heat an oven, bring water to a boil, or the difference between lettuce and cabbage.     Several tell of homes where they use their oven like a spare cupboard.

I know many people that do not really cook at home.......or they believe that sticking a frozen pizza in the oven is, cooking dinner.

I believe in making time to cook, and enjoy, fabulous meals.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^This

education about food does start at home. from being a baby coming onto solids my son has eatten the same as me. that has been food cooked from scratch. don't get me wrong, i can eat as much junk food as next person and have allowed my son to do the same, but he also knows how good fresh food tastes if cooked the right way. i have also taught him how to cook and refused to send ingredients for his home ec class that asked for stuff to make pizza for a third time in a row! when i complained that it wasn't healthy she said that it would have veg in it so it would be i told her she should be sacked and there was no wonder kids were doomed with crap like that being taught.

i don't know what it's like in the US but here in the UK our prisoners get nearly double the allowance that our children get. i mean just how screwed up is that, our kids are treated worse than a criminal!

as for prices of fresh food, schools just need to put more thought into it. seasonal fod is cheap and you can't get much cheaper than cabbage and carrots. if you think of how much waste schools have it's no wonder they think they can't do better. but if kids are not educated to know more about food and parents shovel crap down their throats because they are too bone idol to cook properly then there is no hope.

The 'nanny' state taken to a whole new level. We just had this discussion about schools in Chicago not letting kids bring their own lunches to school. The government knows better. I say move to France if you think it's so great over there.
