Cats and dogs here run from $80- 120 and up. Sometimes the person giving up the dog or cat pays the shelter the adoption fee, so as to place the animal sooner. I have always adopted from shelters and from my POV, the fee they charge is much less than getting a " new " pet and having to fully vet them out and spay/nueter them. I spend about $ 80 per year on each cat for Vet services,

BTW- on spay/neuter- I would not want a pet that was not fixed.

I took in my second rescue kitten on Saturday. They waived the adoption fee and I offered to cover the felv test as I have another rescue baby at home and I wanted to be sure this kitten was negative. .... Pebbles < the older kitten pictured> adoption fee was $35.00.......Spaying/neutering, microchipping, rabies shot and a county tag costs me $25.00 by going thru our County "Neuter Commuter"........a veterinary bus that works 6 days a week here. It's a great system for folks who can't afford to pay full price for the regualar vet. It's great to give them a second chance. ;) What a Bargain for many years of unconditional love!

You mean some people have to PAY for pets ? Wow. I could just wait a month or so and get one from a basement window, well, actually not that long. Or I could just stop some kid on the street and ask if they know anyone with kittens. They give them away. You can take them to vets and all that or not. They seem to do alright without it. So do the possums, squirrells, skunks and who knows what else. But I don't want them.

Of course maybe I could fatten up a deer. Deer fat is like hen's teeth. They come around from time to time but the shotgun is never ready, and once it was in the middle of day. You can't really hunt out front here. A bow and arrow might work, but then you have to get it off the street and in the back really quick. Otherwise the neighbors will come looking for venison.

Really though, I've been offered alot of cats and dogs. If I wanted one I'm sure I could just get one from someone. And not just that, local message boards, craigslist, even fliers in local convenience stores, things like that.

It depends on the place, It was 100 plus dollars more like 180 at one place, and it was 85 for a dog and 75 for a cat at the SPCA if I am remembering right.

A senior Citizen can get a senior citizen dog for free, and if they don't want a senior citizen dog, then it's considerably less than 85, but I don't remember how much less. I am out of the dog adoption business and by proxy that makes my Daddy out of it too, , and so far, my dad is out of the pet owning "business" too.

I wonder if a 'sale" is unique to my area. A senior can adopt a no cost- and if not a senior older dogs are free to adopt.

I see they charge $80-$150 in other parts of the country.

I like other people's pets, but I no longer want my own for a couple of reasons.

1. FLEAS - This is more of a problem with dogs than indoor cats unless one has a fenced in treated yard and never walks the dog. Flea collars and Frontline don't always work.

2. URINE - If a pet ever pisses on carpet, it soaks through to the pad underneath. Nothing but replacing the carpet and pad every time a dog or cat has an accident will remove the smell.

Go to pugrescue.org. The condition and age of the dogs affects the cost.

I don't remember how much he was. But they spay and vaccinate when the animals enter the shelter. They didn't bother with home visits, because I gave them the names of the vets we've used, for dogs and horses. They also saw how the dog just bonded with all of us, all the kids, as though he was our dog already.

My daughter put her arm on top of the half door to look at him, he got up on his back legs and put his front paws on her arm, and looked into her eyes. He was ours (or we were his) from that moment.

Another way to adopt is to call up your local vet. They will frequently know of an animal in need of a home.
