I wonder if a 'sale" is unique to my area.   A senior can adopt a no cost- and if not a senior older dogs are free to adopt.

I see they charge $80-$150 in other parts of the country.

It costs $80 here in good old Indiana. That does include a coupon for a reduced fee spade or neutering (I think $40 with the coupon).

In my county seniors and disabled can adopt at a reduced fee. They don't charge you for the pet but they do charge you for vaccinnes and spaying / neutering.

I think Butch (the newest addition about a year ago) was $40.

I have an elderly bloodhound I got many years ago from SE bloodhound rescue and it was supposed to be $200 which included spay/neuter, vaccinations and the vet care prior to adoption but they never cashed My check. I guess they saw how spoiled she was when they made a home visit LOL.

I am not in the "market" for another pet.

My neighbor is on the fence about a dog- and my mom would like a cat.

IMO - there is always someone moving and giving away a pet- so to shell out $80- when .... could be a waste.  Also with a private party you get a history of the pet.

With both of them- I told them to take their time and get it right- rather then be in a rush and get a bad fit for a pet.

It runs around $78 for a cat to $122 for a dog. $56 for a rabbit. All dogs/cats are spayed and neutered before leaving, have at least the first set of shots, plus a microchip inserted. Rabbits are spayed or neutered. (This can cost $50-300 just for the spay or neuter of a rabbit so it's a bargain.) A free vet exam is included in the deal.

If you get a dog or cat from someone moving, these people haven't always kept up on things like vaccines or had them spayed/neutered. The pet will need to visit a veterinarian for vaccines and possibly spay/neuter, costing between $100-$400.

My last 2 pets were from a private party.

My cat- everything was done. 

My dog- I did get her spayed... (that covers the past 20 years)

Go to Petfinder.com and begin searching. You will find that the price varies dramatically. I've known shelters that have an overpopulation that practically give animals away. I also know of organizations that charge upwards of $ 300.00 - $ 400.00 dollars.

It depends on location, organization, population of animals, and type of animal.

Interesting site.   Thanks.  I heard we have a foster home program here-  that you can sit the pet- but not own it... I thought that would be good for my neighbor-  but she would get too attached and want to own it.   Particularly with her the pet will have to be her idea.

Precisely.   One pet is manageable.   At times I would like one of these...

it runs about 100 bucks here, and if you're a senior citizen, many shelters will offer a price break. In other areas it easily hits 150 - 175( in the tonier parts of the state.)

It runs in the $80 to $120 range in Tennessee.   On a related note, I have become a big fan of breed rescue societies as they place the animal with a foster care family to get to know the personality and then try to match them with a home matching the dogs personality.   My last 2 have come from this type of adoption and I knew exactly the personality of the dog I was getting.  In addition, I've had a couple of them flat turn me down saying "None of the dogs we have right now seem like a good match."   After adoption, the rescues have always called me up a couple of times to make sure it was working out well.   The breed rescues charged $250 for an adoption, but I am a big fan of what they do and that has become my preferred approach.

I wish mine was that low.  Both dogs I adopted, one from our metro shelter and the private shelter were $150-250 each.  I did manage to talk the one woman to give me the one for $80 - but that is only because he was heartworm positive and the shelter recognized it would cost me $1500 to treat and he'd otherwise be put down.  Some were higher (ie the purebred with papers that was owner relinquished) but the local ASPA sometimes runs a "sale" where if you donate goods they need like leashes, collars, food, bleach, you do not have to pay.  There usually are senior rates though, from free to $100.

From the local Battersea Dogs Home it's £105 ($171.39) for a dog which includes:


  • micro chipping

  • initial vaccines, flea and worming treatment

  • a collar, identification tag and lead

  • access to a behaviour support line for continued advice and support


For cats it's £65 ($106.10) which gets you:


  • a full behaviour and temperament assessment


You need all of the following:


  • written identification of your name and address

  • a letter of permission from your landlord

  • all the family members who will be living with your new dog/cat have to be present

  • all the other animals who will be living with your new dog/cat also have to be present.

Our dog Hobo was $235 from the shelter. That included spay, micro chip and first examine plus all his shots. That was in Saint Cloud, MN.

I just adopted an 8 week old siamese kitten from a local shelter, and he cost $80 - already neutered and up to date on shots. Dogs are about the same or a bit more.

Of course, "free" animals aren't necessarily so. I've spent that and more on a dog i took off the street - and was happy to do so. She was a love of a dog, and so grateful for having a home with people who actually paid attention to her.

I figure with two dogs, two cats and 5 parrots, i spend about $60 to $100 at PetsMart every month, and usually flea treatment is on top of that.They aren't cheap to keep but they are worth it for me.

Kill shelters (aka local dog pounds) are often less but do not offer the same adoptabilty and health guarrantees or spay/shot vouchers.

Sometimes Craigslist has pets in need of rehoming due to people moving.
Often the people there are especially happy to place older family pets with people without rehoming fees to people who will give them a good home.

Many older pets are available for adoption.
The problem is that older pets tend to have more health issues and therefore tend to be more expensive in care costs.

I adopted my cat at the age of 5 1/2 months from the SPCALA in late 2009 for $95.00.  This price included having her neutered too. They don't allow you to take the cat home till this is done at a local veterinarian's office. I paid a little extra for pain medication for after the surgery too. The $95.00 also included her shots too.
