I see words used like Vanilla, Munch, and a few others. Is there a link that describes some of these words?

Don't use the word "lifestyle" though.  For some reason some people really don't like it.

Palliata -> RE: Life style terminology (4/3/2011 9:22:55 PM)

God help anyone who changes their vocabulary to suit the fashion.

Munch -  A place where weirdos congregate.  Usually a Second Cup.

Vanilla -  A delicious flavour of ice-cream.  Also used to express how boring or bland one is.  Goes good with coffee.

Sadism - Closet serial killer.  Probably skins animals.

Masochism - Moron.

Cuckolding - Your marriage in two years.  Also a non-verbal way to say, "You suck at sex."

Monogamous - A healthy relationship.

Polyamorous - Authorized cheating.

Dominant - Someone that dresses like a supervillain.

Submissive - Somebody that is the supervillains right-hand man.

Slave - Someone that just got out of a relationship.

Chastity - Lingo for, "Don't fuck my best friend."

Knifeplay - Evolutionary step towards becoming a murderer.

Femdom - A laughable concept.

Femboy - Reason why euthanasia exists.

Daddy Dominant - Dateline NBC's source of ratings.

Roleplay - Boring people become exciting people.

Financial Domme - College girl who has poor blowjob skills.

Safe Word - For pussies who have limits.

Voyeur - Small penis IRL.

That should set you up.  =)

Greetings,

You've been given a resource that offers a good starting point. Please keep in mind as you read and acquaint yourself with different materials, there is some aspect of subjectivity in the viewpoints mentioned and several hot button terms that have varying interpretations according to person/audience. The Internet provides a vast array of information to peruse, but it can be horribly conflicting and downright inaccurate in some cases. When in doubt exercise common sense and cross reference whenever possible. Best of luck.

Namaste,

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Life style terminology (4/4/2011 12:06:14 AM)

This thread most closely resembles the difinitions I learned in my past reading of D/s books. http://www.collarchat.com/m_604021/mpage_1/tm.htm.
quote:

Here are the terms;

Bottom, top, sadist, masochist, Dom/Domme, Master/Mistress, switch, submissive, slave, (Yes I define a submissive and a slave and a Dom/Domme and a Master/Mistress as separate entities)

(Now give me a moment to don my flame retardant suit and bullet proof vest.)

Here are my definitions of these words.

Top; one who controls the scene for play only.

Bottom; one who submits during the scene only

Sadist; one who enjoys inflicting pain

Masochist; one who enjoys receiving pain

Dom/Domme; the one who dominates, the one who is in control of, is responsible for, gives orders and direction to the sub/slave. This is something they are, a personality type, not just something they do only in the bedroom. A Dom/Domme is what they are whether or not they currently own a sub or slave.

Master/Mistress, is one who is dom/domme and currently owns a submissive or a slave. It is a title bestowed on them by virtue of such ownership. It also goes much deeper than the Dom/Domme relationship on the spiritual, emotional and physical levels in regards to the depths of the power exchange and the responsibilities involved.

Switch; one who can either top or bottom during play or a scene.

Submissive; one who yields power or control to the dominant on a limited basis both during day to day life and during scening or playing. Or one whose nature is submissive, one may be a submissive whether or not they currently are submitting to a dominant, it is what they naturally are.

Slave; one who yields control of all aspects of their existence to the dominant within the limits agreed upon prior to being collared (these are generally agreed upon moral limits, not to be confused with" I get it my way or I leave or Sam type behaviors). One who is considered to be owned by another as their sole property. One whose submission to their owner/s is total, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in and out of any scenes or play..
...And what porcelaine said. M

MaxsBoy -> RE: Life style terminology (4/4/2011 1:27:56 AM)

I would add that a switch can also be someone who switches between Dom and sub, not just top and bottom.  That isn't always the case of course, but it is for some.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Life style terminology (4/4/2011 1:47:10 AM)

Agreed. It isn't something I'd think of, because I've thought of limited bottoming, while being in control, but never actually giving up control. Never say never though. [:D] M

SirRussellP -> RE: Life style terminology (4/4/2011 8:32:33 AM)

The term switch bothers me and all ways did.  Reading here I had one of those great insights.  I object to saying that they "switch" between Dom and sub.  I see these terms as being specific to set of responsibilities accepted by the person and find the idea that someone can fill those both to be unthinkable.

The insight is that they "switch" between Top and bottom, little responsibility beyond the play scene.

Thanks all I now feel better.

Russell

Or, by extension, switches between any damned thing you can imagine. Humans are extremely resistant to nice, tidy little boxes.

I'm glad you feel better having said that.

That being said....your definition ( the same thing I heard when I chose to use that label from other folks) and inability to see that a person can be multifaceted instead of either/or has always confused me.

OP...while terms and labels are helpful, sometimes it's best to not get too caught up in them. Good luck and welcome.

Which is fine.  For you.

Hey, in the very beginning, I would have agreed with you.  As a Dominant, I wasn't quite ready to look past Myself and see why anybody would want anything else.  I couldn't understand.  I didn't know why people thought another way.  I had found this thing and it spoke to Me in a way that I knew exactly where I fit.

At the same time, I had to accept that other people were different.  They had more than one place that they fit.  It is what speaks to them.

In My first year, that was a hurdle.  Much like a child who gains better recognition of those around them.  Thank goodness, I have grown to see that My perception isn't that of everyone else.

In My opinion, you may do well to experience such growth.  Education is never a bad thing.

like the song says:
you say potatoes
and I say patartoes
you say tomatoes
and  I say tomartoes....

The above definition you give to the term switch bears no reality to my experience of it.

Like those who transgeneder have an experience of being both, those who switch or who have been switches really do have an experience of being on both sides of the kneel.
Apologies if my experience disappoints you.

MadRabbit, a couple years ago, started a thread about definitions and how each person identifies with them separatly. I thought the thread was a really good one as it showed how so many different people could have different perspectives on such simple terms. Here is the link to the post.
